Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the general secretary of the Soviet Army?

Answer: Jorgey Antonov

Admiral Sloyuk called this emergency conference to discuss the U.S. wanting to bring up the Titanic. With the leaks that are coming into their government, they have quite a bit of information to go on.
2. Were the men at the conference concerned about the Cecilian Project?

Answer: Yes

You bet they were concerned. They realize that the Americans have the ability to stop any inbound missile set to destroy the U.S. They were also concerned that the Americans would build a Byzanium bomb instead of the defense project.
3. What was the suggestion made to stop the Americans?

Answer: sabotage

The plan is not yet described but sabotage was going to be the main way to stop the Americans. Prevlov said that two of the men in NUMA were actually Russian spies and that they were the ones who were sending important information to them for the past two years.
4. What was Seagram concerned about?

Answer: a newspaper article

Seagram showed up at Sandecker's office with the newspaper stating about NUMA's plans to raise the Titanic. Sandecker suggested that they would do now what every other politician would do, and that was call a press conference. Seagram didn't want to be the one to call the conference because they needed someone who had no idea what was going on or why. Sandecker said he knew the perfect person to run the conference.
5. Who did Sandecker pick to run the press conference?

Answer: Dana Seagram

Sandecker picked Dana to run the press conference because she does not know what the true mission is for raising the Titanic. As far as she would know, it is an attempt to retrieve artifacts that may still be onboard and be in good condition. As she tells the press, the "Titanic is a variable storage chest of artifacts." The press questioned as to why so much money was spent in raising a 76 year old ship from the bottom when the money could be used for other developmental programs.
6. In one of the slides, what was the name of the material that was going to be used to patch the damage and seal off the openings?

Answer: wet steel

One of the slides depicted Dr. Amos Sanford showing off his creation that he called "wet steel". In air, the "wet steel" is very pliable like clay. But when it comes in contact with water, it hardens within 90 seconds and can seal itself to any metallic surface. This was going to be used to seal off the damage caused by the iceberg and the boilers crashing through the hull.
7. The valves are to help bleed the air as the ship comes to the surface.

Answer: True

The ship will be raised with compressed air. As the ship comes to the surface, the great pressure at the lower depts will start to lessen. This will cause the compressed air in her hull to expand and, if not bled out, can cause the ship to blow herself apart. The valves are to help relieve this pressure.
8. What was the name of the support tender that the crew was on?

Answer: Capricorn

There was a 35 knot gale going on at the surface and the Capricorn, the support tender, was being tossed about by the heavy seas. The weatherman onboard, however, said the storm will let up in about an hour or so.
9. Who was the weatherman onboard the support tender?

Answer: Joel Farquar

Joel Farquar was on loan from the Federal Meteorologist Services Administrations. NUMA borrowed him for this operation because he had a sixth sense of being really accurate with his weather forecasts. At this point, he was checking several monitors which showed pictures of the North Atlantic.

He explained to Pitt that the Atlantic is one of the most unpredictable oceans to try to track weather from, but he still has a way of being accurate with his forecasts.
10. Which of the submersible's cameras blacked out?

Answer: Sappho II

As Giordino was explaining the positions of the ships to Pitt, the guy manning the monitors said that the Sappho II's camera went out. As the radio operator tried to contact Woodson on the Sappho II, he ran into a lot of interference. Pitt asked Woodson to check his TV camera.

After the camera came back on, Woodson held up a piece of paper saying, "Henry Monk dead. Request permission to surface." Pitt denied it, saying that a storm was whipping up the seas and that it was too dangerous.
11. What did Woodson suspect happened to Monk?

Answer: murdered

Woodson suspected that Monk was murdered because of the way his body was, in relation to parts of the sub. The alternator housing on the Sappho II was on the starboard, or right, side. However, it was Monk's left temple that was smashed in. If it had been an accidental fall, it would've been his right temple. Also, Monk's feet were facing the wrong way. Monk's body was facing towards the stern instead of the bow when he supposedly fell. Pitt saw the pieces come to light.
12. Was there ever a problem with the TV camera onboard the Sappho II?

Answer: No

Pitt asked about the camera and whether there was a malfunction with it. Woodson stated there was no malfunction; only a towel that had been hung on the lens of the camera.
13. Other than blunt-force trauma to the head, what else did the doctor say caused Monk's death?

Answer: spinal cord was crushed

Doc Bailey showed Pitt the bruise that was on the back of Monk's neck. The medulla obligata was crushed and that was the leading cause of death. The trauma to Monk's head was probably done after he died to make it look like an accident. Pitt warned the doc not to say anything for awhile.
14. What English town was Pitt going to visit?

Answer: Timemouth

Sandecker sent Pitt to Timemouth, England, to get some testimony from a living crew member of the Titanic. Pitt thought this was an appalling idea since they already had one crew member killed and the Titanic was to break loose from the bottom in three days.
15. What was the name of Commodore Bigelow's great-granddaughter?

Answer: Sandra Ross

Pitt was answered at the door by Sandra Ross, the Commodore's great-granddaughter. She says she looks after him when she can but she is a stewardess and sometimes has a flight.
