Question 1 of 10
1. Sector General treats at least 68 different species of patient and is prepared to deal with any new 'First Contact' medical emergencies that may occur anywhere in the Galaxy.
Earth Humans, as we all know, are warm blooded, oxygen breathers, with four limbs and thin, elastic skin.
How are they classified in the Sector General system?
Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Although the DBLF lifeforms are classified as being physiologically similar to Earth Humans, they have the appearance of large caterpillars with long, mobile, expressive silvery fur, 20 pairs of limbs, and are totally incapable of telling a lie.
Which species are they?
Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. The prefix V in a species classification code applies regardless of the energy requirements and physical appearance of that species. What attribute does a V indicate? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The first letter A denotes a water breathing and dwelling species, with one exception. What type of organism is an AACP? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Some species only have one representative on the hospital staff, and one of those is Cha Thrat, whose classification is DCNF. What species is she? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. What atmosphere is required by a species with an O or P prefix on their species classification code? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. The water breathing Chalder species resemble 30 foot long crocodiles with extremely large sharp teeth, and a ring of tentacles.
How are they classified?
Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Another species with only one representative member on the staff are the Cinrusskin empaths. Classified GLNO to denote an insectile, low gravity, winged being, who is the only Cinrusskin at the hospital? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Melfans resemble six foot crabs with pincers in proportion! They are amphibious warm blooded oxygen breathers.
How are they classified?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. One of the largest life forms encountered at Sector General are the FROB. With a large body mass, six tentacles, and a thick impervious skin, they can live and work in conditions ranging from total vacuum to 6 gravities.
Their only 'weakness' is that if they don't get to a nutrient sprayer in time to apply food 'paint' they pass out from hunger and fall over.
Which species is this?
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: DBDG

Earth humans are DBDG - the first letter (D) of the four indicates an oxygen breathing lifeform. D - F indicates warm blooded oxygen breathers, whilst A, B or C indicates a water breather.
Within the four letter codings, the first letter denotes the "level of physical evolution," the second indicates the further physical attributes such as placement of limbs and sensory organs, and the third and fourth letters indicate a specific combination of nutritional and atmospheric requirements which also gives information on the skin or tegument of the species.
Nidians are also classified as DBDG, even though they most resemble a three foot teddy bear covered in red brown fur from head to toes!
2. Although the DBLF lifeforms are classified as being physiologically similar to Earth Humans, they have the appearance of large caterpillars with long, mobile, expressive silvery fur, 20 pairs of limbs, and are totally incapable of telling a lie. Which species are they?

Answer: Kelgian

Because a Kelgian's fur reacts to its thoughts and emotions, any other Kelgian knows immediately how it feels, so there is no point in them lying as it is immediately obvious.
The inability to lie extends to politeness and "white lies" too, and a Kelgian always says exactly what it thinks about anything, regardless of interspecies social implications.
Never ever ask a Kelgian if your bum looks big in that dress!
3. The prefix V in a species classification code applies regardless of the energy requirements and physical appearance of that species. What attribute does a V indicate?

Answer: ESP

V is used as the first letter of the classification of a species possessing telepathy or other extra sensory powers, regardless of the rest of their code.
Non telepaths can receive in certain circumstances if the telepath transmits strongly enough, although it tends to leave the receiver with a headache. The ability to "get messages" in dire circumstances enable the staff of Sector General to save several lives which would otherwise have been lost over the course of the series.
An example of such a species are the VTXM Telfi, who are a telepathic hive or group entity who absorb hard radiation to produce their energy.
4. The first letter A denotes a water breathing and dwelling species, with one exception. What type of organism is an AACP?

Answer: Vegetable based

When the AACP species was discovered the system was adapted to "fit them in" at the beginning.
Originally A was used to denote water breathers, and it was thought that there was no lesser evolutionary path that would allow a sentient dominant species to flourish. The vegetable based AACPs changed all that and were slotted in with the AA coding "as plant life evolved before fish."
5. Some species only have one representative on the hospital staff, and one of those is Cha Thrat, whose classification is DCNF. What species is she?

Answer: Sommaradvan

Cha Thrat is the only Sommaradvan to leave her home planet and journey to Sector General. Interspecies misunderstandings cause her to get into a great deal of trouble before finally finding a niche in the psychology department on the staff of Major O'Mara, the Earth Human, who is possibly the most disliked being in the whole hospital.
6. What atmosphere is required by a species with an O or P prefix on their species classification code?

Answer: Chlorine

O and P species are the chlorine breathers. They include the Illensan PVSJs who are visually repugnant to just about every other species. Fortunately they must wear protective envelopes to work in the oxygen wards so their appearance is hidden from view a lot of the time.
7. The water breathing Chalder species resemble 30 foot long crocodiles with extremely large sharp teeth, and a ring of tentacles. How are they classified?

Answer: AUGL

Did you get the 'A' prefix denoting the waterbreather? The DB and DN denote oxygen breathers, and the TLTU species breathe superheated steam and are classed with the "exotics."
Chalders are the biggest patients routinely treated at Sector General, being the largest in dimension, even if their mass is on a par with the largest Hudlars and Tralthans, who are also massive species.
In spite of their fearsome appearance, Chalders are very polite and softly spoken, and even shy and retiring by nature.
8. Another species with only one representative member on the staff are the Cinrusskin empaths. Classified GLNO to denote an insectile, low gravity, winged being, who is the only Cinrusskin at the hospital?

Answer: Prilicla

Doctor Prilicla is the most popular member of the Sector General staff. This is because its empathic facility is so sensitive that any unpleasant emotion in the people within range rebounds on it immediately with devastating effect.
Prilicla therefore goes out of its way to make the surrounding emotional radiation pleasant for itself, and is polite, tactful, and always says the right thing.
9. Melfans resemble six foot crabs with pincers in proportion! They are amphibious warm blooded oxygen breathers. How are they classified?

Answer: ELNT

The Melfan ELNTs make excellent nurses and surgeons in spite of having pincers for their manipulatory organs.
The only way to tell one from another is by careful study of the beautiful (to another Melfan!) carapace markings which are unique.

Answer: Hudlar

Hudlars are much in demand for space construction projects as they are very strong, and can operate in the vacuum of space without the need for life support equipment.
On their home world, the gravity is four times Earth normal, and the atmosphere is dense and soupy. Hudlars absorb nutrition direct from their atmosphere, and must apply nutrient paint at regular intervals when they are off world, to avoid collapsing from hunger.
A being of their size and mass (about that of an elephant) can cause a lot of problems if it faints in an inconvenient spot!
