Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Nevyn, Jill, Rhodry and Ebañy were all characters in Katharine Kerr's 'Deverry Cycle'. Which of the following books was NOT a part of that series?

Answer: Darkspell

'Enchanted Forests' is an anthology of stories written especially for this book by several authors, co-edited with Martin H Greenberg and released in 1995.
'Deverry Cycle' is broken into four acts, similar to a play. 'Deverry' (Act 1) and 'The Westlands' (Act 2) each contain four volumes. Act 3, 'The Dragon Mage' contains three volumes, except in the UK where Act 4 ('The Silver Wyrm') was released as a continuation of Act 3, hence containing seven volumes. 'The Silver Wyrm' (Act 4) was released in regions other than the UK and contains four volumes.
'Deverry Cycle' follows the various incarnations of (along with others) Nevyn, Jill, Rhodry and Ebañy and their relationships with (and to) each other.
With the first book in 'Deverry Cycle', 'Daggerspell', released in 1986, it has been a long wait for readers to get near the end of the story in late 2009.
2. 'Mistress of Magic', 'The High Queen', 'The King Stag' and 'The Prisoner in the Oak' were all released in 1994 as audiobook chapters of the first book in which series by Marion Zimmer Bradley?

Answer: 'Avalon' series

The 'Avalon' series started in 1979 with 'The Mists of Avalon'. The following volumes in the 'Avalon' series were written either with, or by, Diana L Paxson - beginning with 'The Forest House' in 1993.
The 'Colin MacLaren' series started with 'Witch Hill' in 1972, 'Atlantean' series started with 'Web of Light' in 1983, and 'Darkover' series started with 'The Planet Savers' in 1958.
Marion Zimmer Bradley died in 1999 but many of the series started by her are still being added to by other authors.
3. Each of the following trilogies were written by Robin Hobb (pseudonym of Margaret Ogden), but which one is NOT related to the other three?

Answer: 'The Soldier Son' trilogy

'The Farseer' and 'The Tawny Man' trilogies follow the life of FitzChivalry Farseer and, while the 'Liveship Traders' trilogy does not follow his life story, it is linked to both 'The Farseer' and 'The Tawny Man' trilogies.
'The Soldier Son' trilogy is not related in any way to either of the other trilogies, in fact being set in a completely new world with no common characters.
4. 'The View from the Mirror' quartet, 'The Well of Echoes' quartet and 'The Song of the Tears' trilogy all make up which series written by Australian author, Ian Irvine?

Answer: The Three Worlds Cycle

'The Human Rites' trilogy, 'The Runcible Jones' quartet and 'The Sorcerer's Tower' (series) are all written by Ian Irvine but none contain any of the trilogies/quartets as listed in the question.
The Three Worlds Cycle' is named for the three worlds: Aachan, Santhenar and Tallallame and follows characters through various storylines and their interaction with each other over the ages.
Santhenar is the setting for most of the volumes in this series but sub-plots follow characters in the other two worlds - ready for eventual links to Santhenar and its inhabitants.
5. 'The Hunt Begins' and 'New Threads in the Pattern' are the 're-packaged' halves of 'The Great Hunt' written by Robert Jordan. Which series does 'The Great Hunt' belong to?

Answer: The Wheel of Time

Whilst 'Conan the Barbarian' and 'Fallon' are written by Robert Jordan, 'The Great Hunt' is book two in 'The Wheel of Time' series. Consisting of 12 volumes, 'The Wheel of Time' contains:
'The Eye of the World', 'The Great Hunt', 'The Dragon Reborn', 'The Shadow Rising', 'The Fires of Heaven', 'Lord of Chaos', 'A Crown of Swords', The Path of Daggers', 'Winter's Heart', 'Crossroads of Twilight', 'Knife of Dreams', 'The Gathering Storm', 'Towers of Midnight', and 'A Memory of Light'.
'Knife of Dreams' was the last book in the series written solely by Robert Jordan with Brandon Sanderson chosen to finish off the last three volumes planned for the series.
Robert Jordan planned to write Infinity of Heaven after completing The Wheel of Time series as a whole new story but, unfortunately, he passed away before he could achieve the writing of this new story.
6. Australian author, Sara Douglass, wrote about the lands of Tencendor, Coroleas, Escator and Isembaard in her six-book series. What was the name of this six-book series (as released in the US)?

Answer: Wayfarer Redemption

The six books were released in the US as one series of six books whereas in other parts of the world they were released as two: 'The Wayfarer Redemption' trilogy and 'The Axis' trilogy. The main character for most of the books in the series is Axis Starman and the story follows his path and his battles and relationships with various races in Tencendor, namely The Icaari, Lealfast, Charonites, Acharites, Avar, Coroleans, and the Skraelings. With several races originally born from the same mother, many battles take place with many stories to be told, so many in fact, that the 'Darkglass Mountain' trilogy was later written to continue the story.
7. Strangely enough, 'The Sevenwaters Trilogy' written by Juliet Marillier, contains four volumes. Which was the first to be published?

Answer: Daughter of the Forest

'Daughter of the Forest' (published 1999) is loosely based on 'The Six Swans' - an old story with many versions (one by Hans Christian Anderson) - and follows the story of Sorcha who must sew shirts from a nettle plant for her six brothers to save them from evil enchantment, whilst having to remain mute during the task otherwise risking failure.
'Son of the Shadows' (published 2000), 'Child of the Prophecy' (published 2001) and 'Heir to Sevenwaters' (published 2008) follow on from 'Daughter of the Forest' with continuing stories from other, related characters each (of course) having their own personal crisis to deal with along the way.
'Saga of the Light Isles' and 'The Bridei Chronicles' (all written by Juliet Marillier) are completely separate series from 'The Sevenwaters Trilogy' but worth reading as well. Her novel, 'Wildwood Dancing' (2006) is loosely based on 'The Twelve Dancing Princesses', along with its companion book, 'Cybele's Secret' (2007).
8. Broken into 'Arcs', what is the name of the series of books written by Janny Wurts and containing titles such as 'Peril's Gate' and 'Traitor's Knot'?

Answer: The Wars of Light and Shadow

'The Wars of Light and Shadow' contain five Arcs as listed below:
Arc I - 'Curse of the Mistwraith';
Arc II - 'Ships of Merior', 'Warhost of Vastmark';
Arc III ('Alliance of Light') - 'Fugitive Prince', 'Grand Conspiracy', 'Peril's Gate', 'Traitor's Knot', 'Stormed Fortress';
Arc IV ('Sword of the Canon') - 'Initiates Trial', 'Destiny's Conflict'; and
Arc V ('Song of the Mysteries').
With the 'Curse of the Mistwraith' being the first book published in 1993.
'The Wars of Light and Shadow' follow the story of Arithon and Lysaer, two half-brothers who, between conflict and cooperation explore the 'old good vs evil' struggle.
The 'Cycle of Fire' and 'Empire' trilogies along with several stand-alone novels have also been written by Janny Wurts, with 'Empire Trilogy' being written with Raymond E Feist.
9. 'The Wanderers' series, written by Caiseal Mor, makes several references to a particular board game played by characters throughout the story. What is the name of this board game?

Answer: Branbubh

Brandubh is a game played on a square 7x7 board. It is similar to chess, in that some pieces are kings but that's about it for similarity. Players can move their pieces - kings (white) or ravens (black) - in any of four directions. The aim for the white player is to get his high-king to one of the corner squares. The aim of the black player is to capture that high-king. There is no stalemate in the game if the high-king is not captured, he wins.
Mancala, Mehen and Senet are all board-type games played in ancient times and a quick search on the net will give you info on how they work :)
10. With five books published between 1982 and 1984, David Eddings wrote his first fantasy series. What was the name of this series?

Answer: The Belgariad

'The Belgariad' and 'The Mallorean' series' are both related to each other with 'Belgarath the Sorcerer', 'Polgara the Sorceress' and 'The Rivan Codex' also related, but not as a part of a series. 'The Elenium' and 'The Tamuli', published between 1989 and 1994, are linked to each other, but not to 'The Belgariad' or 'The Mallorean'.
'The Belgariad' and 'The Mallorean' follow the story of Garion who, along with his aunt, Polgara, and father, Belgarath, try to fulfil an ancient prophecy.
'The Elenium' and 'The Tamuli' follow Sparhawk on his various quests to enable him to eventually save his queen.
