Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All the Elves are called _____.

Answer: Quendi

The Elves were awakened by Eru Iluvatar near the lake Cuivienen. For a long time, they were living under the stars near the Water of Awakening, exploring the Earth and giving names to all the things they met. They gave themselves the name "Quendi", that means "They, who speak with voices", because they hadn't met any other living creatures with the faculty of speech. Even after the Sundering, the name "Quendi" continued to refer to all the Elves.
2. The Elves that refused the Summoning are called _____.

Answer: Avari

When the Valar learned that the Elves had awakened near Cuivienen, decided to rescue them from Melkor's Shadow and attacked Utumno. At the War of Powers, Melkor was defeated, captured and brought to Valinor. Then, the Valar decided that the best for the Elves was to come to Valinor and sent Orome to call them.

But some Elves refused to follow Orome, preferring Middle-earth than the rumors about the Trees of Valinor. They were called "Avari", which means "The Unwilling", "They, who refused the summoning".
3. The Elves that accepted the Summoning are called _____.

Answer: Eldar

Orome, the Great Rider, after the War of Powers, called the Elves to leave Middle-earth and come to Valinor. The Elves that accepted the summoning, were called "Eldar", "Star People". It is said though, that the name "Eldar" was given to all the Elves by Orome, but later it was used only for the Elves that began the Great Journey, whether they reached Aman or not. So, the Eldar are the Quendi except for the Avari.
4. The Elves that reached Aman are called Vanyar.

Answer: False

Three Elven races began the Great Journey from Cuivienen, following Orome: the Vanyar, the Noldor and the Teleri. These are the Eldar. But not all of them reached Aman; some stayed behind the Hithaeglir and others remained at Beleriand. Finally, the Vanyar, the Noldor and most of the Teleri passed the Sea and reached Aman.

These Elves were called "Calaquendi", "Elves of Light", because the saw they Light of the Two Trees of Valinor.
5. The Elves that didn't go to Aman are called Moriquendi.

Answer: True

The Elves that began the Great Journey, but didn't reach Aman, were called "Umanyar", "They, who aren't from Aman". They were neither Avari nor Calaquendi. The Umanyar together with the Avari, are called "Moriquendi", "The Elves of Darkness", because they never saw the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor.
6. The Teleri that went to Aman are called _____.

Answer: Falmari

The third Elven race that began the Great Journey from Cuivienen to Aman, was the race of the "Teleri", "They, who come last". It was the biggest tribe and had two leaders: Elwe and Olwe. During the Journey, a lot of the Teleri stayed behind and didn't pass the Sea. Those that, after Elwe's disappearance, followed Olwe and went to the Undying Lands, are called "Falmari", "The Sea Elves".
7. The Elves that stayed east of the Hithaeglir are called _____.

Answer: Nandor

The Elves, after a long journey from Cuivienen, reached the Great River Anduin and saw the high mountain range Hithaeglir, the Line of Misty Peaks. The Teleri stayed east of the river but the Vanyar and the Noldor passed it, following Orome. And when the Vala left, the Teleri were afraid of the Mountains.

Then, an Elf called Lenwe, led a lot of his people south and they became a separate race. They were called "Nandor", "They, who turned back". They had love for running waters and falls and knowledge of plants and animals.
8. The Teleri that stayed at Falas with their lord, Cirdan, are called Falathrim.

Answer: True

After a long journey, the Vanyar and the Noldor reached the west coasts of Middle-earth and saw the Great Sea Belegaer. They were afraid of the deep waters and stayed there for a long time. Then, Ulmo came, played music to them with the Ulumuri, his great horns, and their fear for the Sea became desire. So, they accepted to pass the Sea and went to Aman, on Tol Eressea.

The Teleri didn't follow them because they were at the East Beleriand and their lord Elwe was lost. After many years and because of Finwe's request, Ulmo returned to Middle-earth and asked the Teleri to come to Aman. Most of them accepted the call and with Olwe as their leader, followed Ulmo.

But Osse, who liked the coasts of Middle-earth, wasn't happy for the Teleri's leave. So, he persuaded some of them to stay there.

These were called "Falathrim", "the Elves of Falas", who later settled in the havens of Brithombar and Eglarest. They were the first ship constructors and the first mariners in Middle-earth. Their lord was Cirdan the Shipwright.
9. The Teleri that stayed at Beleriand searching for Elwe Singollo are called Eglath.

Answer: True

Elwe Singollo was the leader of the Teleri. After Orome's call, he went to Valinor along with Finwe and Ingwe and saw the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor. When he returned to Middle-earth, he persuaded his people to make the Great Journey to the Undying Lands.

But one day, he entered Nan Emloth and there, he met Melian the Maia, one of the holy spirits. They fell in love with each other and for a long time they stayed in the forest. The Teleri searched for their leader, but since they couldn't find him, most of them followed Ulmo and went to Aman.

But some of them, who were agnates or friends of Elwe, stayed at Beleriand. They were called "Eglath", "The Forsaken".
10. The Green Elves of Ossiriand are called _____.

Answer: Laiquendi

The Nandor, the Elves that refused to pass the Hitgaeglir during the Great Journey, went south, by the river Anduin, following Lenwe, their leader. Some of them reached the delta of the Great River and settled near the Sea, while others, passed the White Mountains (Ered Nimrais), turned north and went to Eriador.

These Elves didn't have weapons to fight against the wild animals from the north. So, Denethor, Lenwe's son, learning of Thingol's great power, led a lot of his people to Beleriand. There, Thingol welcomed them and they settled in Ossiriand, the Land of the Seven Rivers.

These Elves helped King Thingol at the First Battle, but when Denethor was killed at Amon Ereb, they were afraid and never fought openly again. The were named "Laiquendi", "The Green Elves", because their clothes were green, like the leaves of the trees. So, it was easy for them to hide.
