Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rincewind was transported to EcksEcksEcksEcks at the end of the book 'Interesting Times' in a complicated spell, involving Rincewind, an apparent kangaroo and what else?

Answer: A 'Barking Dog'

The Barking Dog was a small cannon, which the wizards helpfully sent back as it had arrived, with a lit fuse! Hamish is my hamster, who likes appearing in quizzes.
2. Who, at the beginning of 'The Last Continent' was 'very, very ill'?

Answer: The Librarian

His 'morphic function' was being attacked by influenza, causing him to change shape - but not, apparently, his colour.
3. In this book, Mustrum Ridcully is trying to be a Manager (with all this entails!). What is he trying to weld the wizards into?

Answer: A Lean Mean Team

Ridcully becomes 'pro-active' and starts preparing 'career development packages' 'job descriptions' and all the other things Managers want you to do, rather than the job! The wizards 'had no intention of being lean, but were getting mean as anything'!
4. How did the wizards get out of the University?

Answer: Through the Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography's bathroom window

The Professor of Recondite Achitecture etc. gave them a map of the University which took them to the Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography's room. Outside his bathroom window was a tropical beach. The other two wrong answers are a way to Narnia and the magic mirror from Harry Potter.
5. At first, Rincewind was sure he was a racist - he'd run 100m, the mile, the Marathon - the lot. When he finds out what a racist really is, he knows he's not. What two sorts of people does Rincewind divide the world into?

Answer: Those who were trying to kill him and those who weren't

As far as Rincewind is concerned, the first group has vastly outnumbered the second!
6. In this book, what do we find out about Rincewind's hourglass (which, on the Discworld, holds the sands of the owner's life)?

Answer: Not even Death knows when he's going to die

Rincewind's hourglass 'looked like something created by a glassblower who'd had the hiccups in a time machine' and the sand is flowing every which way. Death has no idea when Rincewind's going to die, which he finds very vexing.
7. What does a list of the harmless creatures of Fourecks (the continent is referred to as this in the book as well as EcksEcksEcksEcks, The Last Continent and Terror Incognita) contain?

Answer: Some of the sheep

When Death asks in his library for a book about the dangerous creatures, he's buried in large volumes, including 'Dangerous Mammals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, Fish, Jellyfish, Insects, Spiders, Crustaceans, Grasses, Trees, Mosses, and Lichens of Terror Incognita' and that was Volume 29C, Part 3!
8. Who's the first wizard to go to the tropical island?

Answer: The Bursar

While the wizards are all standing round arguing about whether or not it'd be dangerous, Ridcully noticed that the Bursar had sneaked away and was having a nice paddle in the surf.
9. While the wizards are arguing about whether to go to the tropical island, we discover that the Senior Wrangler has lost several relatives in somewhat unusual ways. As a result, what is something that the Senior Wrangler does not say are dangerous?

Answer: Lions

His aunt apparently tried to eat a pineapple in an unusual way - 'We couldn't get it off her'. His cousin was laid low by a green bubbling clam and his uncle had a crate of prawns fall off a crane onto his head. The Senior Wrangler is also scared of sharks, barracudas, marlins, swordfish, tigers, gorillas and elephants. All this just makes the Archchancellor, a keen hunter, eager to get out there.
10. Which of the wizards has a certain fondness for Mrs Whitlow, the University's housekeeper?

Answer: The Senior Wrangler

We find out that the Senior Wrangler once saw Mrs. Whitlow's naked dressmaker's dummy and had to go for a quiet lie down. Later in this book, Mrs. Whitlow starts to exercise a strange fascination on some of the other wizards, but the Bursar, Stibbons and Ridcully seem immune.
11. What's the name of the talking Kangaroo that helps (for some value of helps) Rincewind?

Answer: Scrappy

Obviously giving a nod to the children's TV character Skippy (when Scrappy wrinkles his nose it means 'Come quick, someone's fallen down a deep hole'), Scrappy says he and Rincewind are mates.
12. How many horses were pulling 'Mad's' chariot?

Answer: Eight

'Mad' isn't his name - more a description. He's a dwarf and he, his cart and horses were covered in leather and metal. Because Mad is pointing a deadly weapon at him, Rincewind instantly thinks of him as a friend.
13. What Australian group does Rincewind describe himself as, after the Road Gang attack, when Mad says he's as mad as him?

Answer: Mental As Anything

Mental As Anything, Men at Work and INXS are/were all Australian groups. Although Rincewind was, during the attack a 'Man without a Hat' (one of the Road Gang had stolen it), Men Without Hats were Canadian.
14. Why was the barman in Dijabringabeeralong called Crocodile?

Answer: He was a crocodile

His nickname was Crocodile Crocodile but most people called him Dongo. Until he'd seen a crocodile in shorts, Rincewind hadn't realised what a difficult job being a tailor must be.
15. Mrs. Whitlow had altered her dress to something she had once seen in a picture of Queen Zazumba. It was two quite respectable halves separated by a narrow channel. What is it described as?

Answer: a newzealand

It obviously couldn't be a bikini (named after the atoll that nuclear weapons had been tested on, because it was estinated to have the same impact on the world!) as Bikini didn't exist on Discworld. I suppose if Fourecks exists, newzealand might as well.
16. When the god of evolution wanted to know about sex, who explained it to him?

Answer: Mrs. Whitlow

The wizards are well-known for being celibate (possibly because the eighth son of an eighth son is a sorceror, with all the problems that entails). Prsumably there was once a Mr. Whitlow - anyway, she made the god laugh and stop letting off random fireballs, so they all got out alive.
17. While in Fourecks, Rincewind boils beer, vegetables and salt to make a kind of 'salty-tasting beery brown gunk'. What spread did he probably invent?

Answer: Vegemite

Vegemite is the Australian version of the English spread Marmite. They are both yeasty vegetable extracts and no doubt, like the Marmite adverts, you either love it or hate it. English expatriates often have friends from home bring them Marmite - I certainly did when I lived in America!
18. The god of evolution's big project was what?

Answer: cockroach

To the god of evolution - this was the epitome of creation 'The sun will burn out, the seas will dry up but, but this chap will be there'. All very true, but so depressing that it sent Ponder Stibbons rushing away.
19. Whilst in jail in Bugarup, Rincewind is told about a Fourecks outlaw who sounds suspiciously like the famous Ned Kelly. What is his name?

Answer: Tinhead Ned

Ned Kelly was famous for his home-made 'armour'. Apparently there was no jail that could hold Tinhead Ned, but unfortunately 'he couldn't run very far'.
20. What's the name of the Dibbler Rincewind meets in Forecks?

Answer: Fair Go Dibbler

There's always a Dibbler. This one's tray is labelled 'Dibbler's Cafe de Feet' and he was born in Treacle Street, Bludgaree.
21. In the Galah float of 'Petunia, the Desert Princess', who was the only real woman?

Answer: Neilette

Neilette joined the troupe when her brother Noelene decided trying for the surf championship didn't go with ballgowns.
22. There are two Rincewinds in this book.

Answer: True

Bill Rincewind is the Archchancellor of Bugarup University.
23. What creature do the wizards from Unseen University bring into being on Fourecks?

Answer: Duck-billed platypus

The wizards started off to draw a duck, but somehow four legs and a tail got involved. According to Gerald Durrell, Winston Churchill wanted a duck-billed platypus to raise morale in Britain during World War II. A specimen was actually transported all the way to the Irish Sea, but a submarine alert outside Liverpool meant that the ship had to drop depth charges and the sensitive animal died of shock.
24. In the spirit of exchange, what does Archchancellor Ridcully offer to swap six students from Unseen University for with Archancellor Rincewind?

Answer: A decent lawnmower

Apparently Unseen University's was broken.
25. At the end of 'The Last Continent' a small boy tries out a word that had been handed down for thousands of years - what did this word mean?

Answer: The smell after rain

Rincewind (with the help of a bull-roarer, an old man with a leather bag on his back (possibly carrying the whole universe) and the Librarian) finally made it rain. I hope you enjoyed the quiz. No worries!
