Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why did the Guild of Assassins take pity on Teatime?

Answer: He'd lost both parents at a very early age

As Lord Downey later said 'We should have wondered a bit more about that'...Teatime did have a glass eye and preferred his name to be pronounced 'Teh-ah-tim-eh'. The assassin whose father died was Teppic ('Pyramids')
2. At the beginning of 'Hogfather', Mustrum Ridcully is getting Modo to open a door with a sign on it reading 'Do not, under any circumstances open this door'. He's doing this 'To see why they wanted it shut'. The footnote explains that this tells us 'all we need to know about human civilisation. At least, those bits of it that are now under the sea, fenced off or still ______' what?

Answer: smoking

I love this. It's why people will happily accept that it's 25.8 trillion miles to Alpha Centauri but will always touch a surface labelled 'Wet Paint'.
3. Mustrum Ridcully supplied what vital ingredient for the cure for the oh God of hangovers in 'Hogfather'?

Answer: Wow Wow Sauce

Joss Acland played him in the MOB production. I think he did an excellent job as the Archchancellor, but my personal preference would have been for Brian Blessed...
4. What did Susan threaten would happen to Gawain if she caught him being twee again?

Answer: Susan would knot Gawain's arms behind his head

Susan had no truck with the previous governess, who had conjured real monsters out of the childrens' imagination. Susan deals in real, ridiculous threats in graphic detail!
5. The first letter to the Hogfather we find in the book is read by the Death of Rats. In it a small child asks for 'a drum an a dolly an a teddybear an a Gharstley Omnian Inquisision Torchure Chamber with Wind-up Rack and Nearly Real Blud'. Which child wrote this?

Answer: Virginia Prood

Virginia is obviously a warped child! All the other children appear in the book asking for gifts from the Hogfather too. Interesting fact of the day - if James Riddle were called Jimmy for short he'd be rhyming slang for what one of the pigs did in Crumley's! So, if you're in a pub in England and someone says they're 'going for a Jimmy', you know where they're going now!
6. When Death starts driving the sleigh (pulled by Rooter, Gouger, Tusker and Snouter, four large wild pigs), before he discovers the magic words to get them moving ('Apple Sauce'), he tries 'Giddyup' and 'Pig hoo-ey'. 'Pig Hoo-ey' is a short story by what other brilliant author?

Answer: P G Wodehouse

'Pig Hoo-ey' is a tale of how the Empress of Blandings starts to go off her feed when the pig man is jailed after going out on a bender. I won't spoil it if you haven't read it, but I urge you to do so. Silly joke of the day: Your dog was worrying my sheep - sitting on the fence shouting 'mint sauce!'.
7. Banjo 'reminded Sideney too much of Ronnie Jenks, the bully' who'd made Sideney's life a misery at school. What school?

Answer: Gammer Windlestone's Dame School

Ronnie wasn't even a pupil, just a relative of Gammer Windlestone. Like Banjo, Ronnie was obviously a bit intellectually-challenged. Funny how so many bullies are, isn't it?
8. When Susan was eight she'd made twenty-seven dollars from her parents by putting teeth out for the tooth fairy from a collection of animal skulls that she'd found in the attic. A molar from which animal had been the mistake that got her found out?

Answer: Hippopotamus

Susan, of course, given whose grand-daughter she is, is happy with skulls from an early age! I mounted a hippo's tooth, that my friend was given by a Masai in Kenya, in silver to make a pendant. My jewellery tutor says it's the most grotesque piece of jewellery he's ever seen!
9. Jack Frost doesn't sleep. True or false?

Answer: True

When he meets the 'Verucca Gnome' (who wants to know why Jack only does ferns) the said gnome remarks that 'you don't half look spiky. I bet you go through a lot of bedclothes'. Jack replies icily (how else?) that he doesn't sleep.
10. According to the book 'Hogfather', if you wanted a small ground-to-air missile from Bergholt Stuttley Johnson, the world's 'worst inventor', what should you ask him to design?

Answer: An ornamental fountain

B S Johnson (also known as Bloody Stupid) mostly features in the books as an architect with no sense of dimension, designing cruet sets that whole families live in and triumphal arches kept in matchboxes. However, he also got involved in the Patrician's gardens (Incapability Brown anyone?) It was a 'bit surprising that he had turned to bathroom design' - but the door is soon nailed shut again!
11. Euphrasia Goat wants a pony from the Hogfather - as part of her present the 'Hogfather' gives her a 'pair of those trousers that make you look as though you have a large ______ in each pocket'. What?

Answer: Rabbit

I shall never look at jodhpurs the same way again! He also gives her a bridle and a saddle and 'a rather strange hard hat'. The scene with 'Euffie' is one of my favourites - so much so that I'll base the next question on it....
12. In Crumley's, Euphrasia Goat asks for a pony and the 'Hogfather' tells her he has left one in the kitchen. Her mother is not impressed and sharply says that they live on the third floor and the Hogfather is only joking. The 'Hogfather' agrees that he was. So, did he leave Euffie a pony and, if so, where?

Answer: Yes, in the bedroom

Death points out that a bedroom is more hygenic! As 'Pixie Albert' says, a pony in a third floor bedroom should make them believe in the Hogfather!
13. All the random belief sloshing around because the Hogfather's dead is bringing things into being. Bibulous is the Discworld's God of Wine. Who is the 'oh God of Hangovers'?

Answer: Bilious

He also comes with a small green and purple imp who hits him on the head and coats his tongue with yellow gunk. I've had mornings like that, but the poor 'oh God' doesn't even drink!
14. Another being called into life in 'Hogfather' appears in the laundry. It looks like a very small elephant with a very wide trunk. The Chair of Indefinite Studies is cross with it. What is it?

Answer: The Eater of Socks

The Hair Loss Fairy appears on the Dean's head. The Pencil Eater is a bird with a very odd-shaped bill and the Cheerful Fairy is equipped with a Blue Chicken of Happoness. The Chair of Indefinite Studies is cross with the Eater of Socks because it ate his sock with the flax-reinforced heel. The Eater of Socks is so cute in the film!
15. Little Match Girls dying in the snow is also part of what the spirit of Hogswatch is all about; so Death lets her die. True or false?

Answer: False

The Hogfather; gives her the best present of all - a future! Death feels that Hogwatch is 'THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY. AND OTHER THINGS ENDING IN OLLY'.
16. Who was the only one of the Wizards who'd enjoyed Hogwatch all his life?

Answer: Archancellor Ridcully

A huge row starts among the wizards when the Senior Wrangler found out that the Dean had had a pillowcase, rather than a stocking. They all start going on about how ghastly Hogswatch is. Ridcully had enjoyed it all; the 'ancient relatives', the games, paper hats and had even carefully read the Hogswatch cards and 'found time for a few kind thoughts about the sender'. Bless!
17. 'On Dasher, on Dancer , on Cupid and Vixen...' you all know how it goes here on Earth, but who is missing from the Hogfather's sleigh pullers? Snouter, Gouger, Rooter and _______?

Answer: Tusker

The Hogfather is left a glass of sherry and a pork pie and a turnip for the hogs (except from the Librarian, who gives them a banana (figures)). In our house, Santa Claus got sherry or whisky and biscuits or cookies and a carrot for Rudolph....
18. Who is the leader of the Ankh-Morpork Wassailers in 'Hogfather'?

Answer: Anaglypta Huggs

Mrs Huggs has carefully removed all the 'rude' words from the old wassailing songs, but, as the footnote notes 'sometimes a chicken is nothing but a bird'.
19. After the 'Hogfather' has erm..redistributed the food, what is NOT on the menu at the posh restaurant in Ankh Morpork for Hogswatch?

Answer: Christmas Pudding

Death swapped the beggars' meal (mud and old boots) for a catered meal for over a hundred. However, the rsourceful manager saves the day, treating the boots like aged beef and trying to caramelise mud. The wrong answers were dishes: Mousse de la Boue was 'Mud Mousse in a basket of shoe (groan!) pastry, Sole d'une Bonne Femme came from the ladies' shoes and the laces became Spaghetti Carbonara! I bet the guests had eaten worse!
20. What were the gang using to control children?

Answer: A huge pile of teeth

The huge pile of teeth in the MOB production was actually made up of over 1/2 million (500,000) individual plastic teeth - and two of them are among my most treasured possessions!
21. The things that frightened them as children come after the gang in the house where they've worked the teeth spell. What was Chickenwire's especial fear?

Answer: a wardrobe

The decoration round the keyhole turned into a face in the night and it whispered things. With me, if the wardrobe door was just a little bit open...funny what frightens us as children, isn't it?
22. When Twyla's uncle died, they just told her that he'd 'gone'. For three weeks, Twyla believed that her uncle had been buried in 'the sad patch' 'along with Buster and Meepo and all three Bulgies'. What were the three Bulgies?

Answer: Gerbils

Makes perfect sense to a child, why shouldn't you bury your relatives with your pets?
23. What does Banjo Lilywhite want to stay in the house and do the Tooth Fairy's job?

Answer: A puppy called Spot

Banjo's not really cut out to be a villain, he was just born into the wrong family and got in with the wrong crowd. He had a kitten when he was little but his mam 'drownded it 'cos it was dirty'. Aww! (Hamish is my hamster and he likes to be in quizzes).
24. Hex, the Unseen University 'computer', is given a teddy bear for Hogswatch. Whenever it is taken away his response is '+++ Mine! Waaaah! +++'. None of the students want to live in a world where they have to tell the Archchancellor that Hex won't work without his bear. What do they decide to say it needs instead?

Answer: The FTB enabled

FTB stands for Fluffy Teddy Bear! I love Hex!
25. What extra 'toy' does Gawain have at the end of the book?

Answer: A 'marble' that rolls in a funny way

It's actually Teatime's false eye! I hope you enjoyed the quiz. Please don't forget to rank it, and do let me know what you thought!
