quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of the Imp who is in Ankh-Morpork's first speed camera, being erected by Sergeant Colon on one end of Brass Bridge, at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Rodney

Rodney is to paint iconographs showing the licence of the cart or the driver's face if a cart gets between two lines in less than a minute. Rob Anybody and Daft Wullie are Nac Mac Feegles and Wee Mad Arthur, despite being thought of as a gnome, is also a Nac Mac Feegle.
2. What does All Jolson offer Sergeant Colon that finally gets him to remove the clamp from the cart outside his restaurant?

Answer: Honey Ice Cream

The clamp was put on the cart while a lucky customer enjoyed 'Smitten steak with cream sauce and slumpie (with butter, of course) and black death meringue to follow'. All Jolson suggests to Colon that he hears things in his restaurant, but it isn't until All remembers he may have some left over honey ice cream that Colon gets a troll Constable to remove the clamp.
3. Vetinari had received a letter - it read 'DeEr Cur, The CruELt to HOMLIss DoGs In thIs CITy Is A DIssGrays, WaT arE The WaTCH Do Ing A BouT IT?' Who was it SiNed (sic) by?

Answer: The LeAK AgyANsct CrUle T To DoGs

Laddie was the Wonder Dog from 'Moving Pictures'. Scraps was the Igor's Dog in 'Carpe Jugulum'. As Vimes points out, the author of this note spells even worse than Carrot - which is saying something"!
4. Who, specifically, did Vetinari send to the crowning of the Low King in Uberwald? Be careful with your answer!

Answer: The Duke of Ankh

Yes, I know they're the same person - but Vetinari makes it very clear that Sam is going in his capacity as Duke of Ankh, as Uberwald is a feudal system and therefore very rank conscious.
5. Cheery Littlebottom, the dwarf corporal, explained to Vimes that some dwarfs acted as if B'hrian Bloodaxe was still alive. She described these dwarfs as drudak'ak. What does this mean?

Answer: 'They do not get out in the fresh air enough'

These dwarfs are the real old-fashioned sort of dwarfs who never go out in daylight. Of the wrong answers, a dialect word meaning "watermeadow" is the translation of Constable Ping's surname. Kruk is 'Dwarf Mining Law' and jar'ahk'haga is 'Ideas taster' - both from dwarfish.
6. What would Leonard of Quirm's 'Very-Fast-Coffee machine' have been if Leonard hadn't been thirsty?

Answer: A scale model of a device for reaching the moon and other celestial bodies

Leonard had designed all these. He was the greatest inventor in the Discworld, and kept by Vetinari - for his own and mankind's sake. Although Leonard was a fabulous inventor, he didn't have much imagination when it came to naming things.
7. Vetinari described Uberwald as a 'mystery inside a riddle wrapped in an enigma'. How did Sergeant Colon, panicking about Vimes not coming back, describe it?

Answer: A misery wrapped in an enema

Winston Churchill described Russia as 'a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma'. Given what Vimes experienced in Uberwald, he may well have agreed with Colon's phrase!
8. What did an increasingly paranoid Colon, promoted to Captain in the absence of Vimes and Carrot, think was being stolen?

Answer: Sugar lumps

Colon, having been given authority, unravelled faster than a ball of wool with a mischievous kitten! Captain Queeg, in 'The Caine Mutiny' was convinced someone had stolen strawberries. Nobby is the only person who steals petty cash in the Watch and Colon himself was throwing away and burning the paperwork.
9. Both Inigo Skimmer and Carrot interrupted when Sybil was trying to give Sam news she'd received from Mrs. Content. What was the news?

Answer: Sybil was going to have a baby

Mrs. Content had been a midwife for fifty years.
10. What, according to Gaspode, was not being a Bad Dog?

Answer: Stealing sausages

In Gaspode's own mind, stealing sausages was merely being a Naughty Boy and he'd never crossed the boundary. Fighting, trickery and stealing was just being a Naughty Boy.
11. What was not one of the disciplinary charges that acting Captain Colon had laid against his men?

Answer: Bad time-keeping, demeanour and all-round uselessness

Colon appears to have expanded the dumb insolence of eyeballing. The charge of making an arm fall off in an unsubordinate way was obviously laid against Reg Shoe. Bad time-keeping etc. was almost certainly Vimes' description of Colon himself (probably with his henchman, Nobby).
12. Who did the guards that Vimes nicknamed Nobbski and Colonesque refuse to let into Bonk without a 'pisspot'?

Answer: Detritus

Apparently, the only trolls allowed were prisoners of war, or slave trolls with passports signed by their owners. Sam is having none of this for a free troll of Ankh-Morpork.
13. Who was not a surviving 'child' of Guye and Serafine von Uberwald in 'The Fifth Elephant'?

Answer: Elsa

All four were werewolves, but only Angua and Wolfgang were classic bi-morphs. Elsa and Andrei were yennorks (werewolves without the change switch). Poor Elsa was stuck as a human and Wolfgang killed her. Andrei didn't wait for Wolfgang to get to him but ran away to become a Champion sheepdog in Borogravia.
14. Who was Captain of the Candles, who committed suicide after the Scone of Stone had been stolen?

Answer: Dozy Longfinger

Rhyss Rhysson and Albrecht Albrectson were rivals for the position of Low King and Dee was the Ideas Taster. Dozy Longfinger had been Captain of the Candles for 60 years.
15. How many crowns did anyone who won Wolfgang's great game win?

Answer: Four hundred

Stranded, naked, five miles from Bonk, Sam was given an hour's lead.
16. Irina, the youngest of the three sisters that Sam Vimes runs into, had all sorts of ideas as to what could be done if they cut down their Cherry Orchard. What was not one of them?

Answer: A Rugby pitch

Irina is not happy. This part of the book, with its spoof on Russian literature, is both very funny and very clever.
17. The three sisters lend Vimes the gloomy and purposeless what, of Uncle Vanya?

Answer: Trousers

Along with the trousers he was given a surprisingly sharp axe with which Irina definitely wasn't going to chop down the Cherry Orchard...
18. What does Sybil sing to get them taken to see the Low King?

Answer: Ironhammer's "Ransom" song

Apparently Sybil had sung the Ironhammer part at finishing school. She certainly moved the dwarfs - several of them were in tears. The 'Wizard's Staff' is a popular Ankh-Morpork ditty.
19. What, found in fat deposits, are BCBs?

Answer: Burnt Crunchy Bits

'Mostly unbelievably huge and ancient animals, deep fried'. Sybil proves a magnificent negotiator for Ankh-Morpork.
20. What is fatsup, a traditional Uberwald dish?

Answer: Soup with sausages in it

Sam ate venison with the wolves, but was put off the liver and onions when he learnt what Igor was keeping in the icehouse.
21. What colour tights are part of Sam Vimes' official dress uniform?

Answer: red

Sam hates his dress uniform and will do just about to get out of wearing it, but Sybil makes him get into it when she can. He insists the tights go at the knees too.
22. Vimes describes Wolfgang to Sybil like this '..one who just won't let go. Eight-stone weaklings who'll try to headbutt Detritus. Evil little bantamweight _______s who'll bust a bottle on the bar and try to attack eight watchmen all at once. You know what I mean? Idiots who'll go on fighting long after they should stop. The only way to put 'em down is to put 'em out'. What does he say this type is?

Answer: Bottle covey

Sybil says drily 'I think I recognise the type, yes', which Sam didn't realise was irony until several days later!
23. Poor Igor at the embassy is killed by Wolfgang. But as the Igors say, 'what goes around, comes around'. Which bit of Igor can't be used again?

Answer: Heart

Igor explained that his heart had had it, but went on to list the bits that could be used again - Igor had a customer waiting for a right hand, there were years of good service left in his lower intestine and 'old M'th Prodzky down the road would value his hip jointth'. Selfless chap!
24. Who finally killed Wolfgang?

Answer: Sam Vimes

Sam fired a mortar and Wolfgang, obeying his doggy instincts, caught it in his mouth. Fire and silver were the only things that could kill werewolves.
25. What does Angua make Carrot promise to do at the end of 'The Fifth Elephant'?

Answer: Kill her himself if she turns like Wolfgang did

Angua knows that werewolves are not the most stable of creatures and asks that if she goes feral, it will be Carrot that will personally come after her. Of course he says yes, he loves her!
