Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Pippin and Gandalf were riding to Gondor from Rohan, they witnessed the Men of Gondor lighting the _______ fires. What goes in the blank?

Answer: Beacon

Three days after Gandalf and Pippin hastily left Rohan, they had just reached Anorien in Gondor when Pippin saw the red fire of the signal fires as they were lit, sending out Gondor's desperate plea for help. The closest fire to Minas Tirith was Amon Din, lying near the Druadan Forest, and consequently the first lit.

In order, the remaining fires were lit: Nardol, Erelas, Min-Rimmon, Calenhad, and the Halifirien.
2. As Gandalf and Pippin approached Minas Tirith, men were seen laboring on parts of the Rammas Echor, which was what?

Answer: Wall of the Pelennor

The Rammas Echor was the wall that encircled and defended the Pelennor fields, that lay around Minas Tirith. The wall had been built long before Denethor II became steward, but had slowly crumbled. Under the imminent threat of an invasion from Sauron, men were sent to repair the wall, repairs that were finished the evening of Gandalf and Pippin's arrival.
With his typical optimism, Gandalf commented that they were too late in restoring the wall, and courage would be their best weapon against Sauron's armies.
3. From what both Beregond and Bergil said, the old people, and most women and children were sent away to refuges in wains. In what direction relative to Minas Tirith did the refuges lie?

Answer: South

As Pippin and Beregond watched from the wall, they saw the chief highway, which ran south from the city. A convoy of wains, or wagons, traveled along, towards Tumladen and Lossarnach, then on to the mountain villages and Lebennin, a fiefdom of Gondor.

Beregond is a guard of the Citadel, and Bergil is his son.
4. From different locations in the Outlands, men came pouring into Minas Tirith to aid in the defense. How many different locations did the reinforcements come from?

Answer: Eight

Men came from Lossarnach, Ringlo Vale, Blackroot Vale, Anfalas, Lamedon, Ethir, Green Hills (Pinnath Gelin), Dol Amroth, eight places in total. Each was led by a different leader except the men from Lamedon and Ethir: Forlong, Lord of Lossarnach, commanded his men; Dervorin, leading the vassals of his father, lord of Ringlo Vale; Blackroot Vale in the upland of Morthond was represented by their lord, Duinhir, and his two sons; the lord of Anfalas came himself, too; the men of the green hills followed their lord, Hirluin; and last but not least the Prince of Dol Amroth, Imrahil, led his men in.
5. When this man returned from the Outlands, he boosted the morale of the soldiers of Gondor, greatly. Who is he?

Answer: Faramir

A few days after Gandalf and Pippin arrived, Faramir, second son of Denethor, returned. Before, Beregond said, "things may change when Faramir returns. He is bold, more bold than many deem... a man of hardihood and swift judgement in the field." Indeed, when Faramir arrived in Gondor, all men rejoiced and their hopes buoyed, as he was a beloved leader.
6. What was the name of the town that Denethor wanted to hold against the enemy, and lay between Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith?

Answer: Osgiliath

Osgiliath used to be the capital city of Gondor, but ceased being so when the Shadow again grew in the East. Around the time of the War of the Ring, it served as an outpost. Lying as it did over the Anduin River, Denethor determined to hold the city, thinking that that would greatly hinder the enemy. As a result, Faramir was sent to deny the enemy passage of the Anduin at that point.
7. How many of his men did Faramir lose in the fall of Osgiliath and subsequent retreat? One ______. What goes in the blank?

Answer: Third

Despite making the enemy's armies suffer, Faramir could not but retreat in the face of such enormous odds, his army being fully ten times outnumbered. As the retreat was over the entire expanse of the Pelennor Fields, many more of his men fell. Faramir himself was severely wounded while covering the retreat.
8. At dawn, Rohan's armies appeared to aid Gondor in her time of need. What animal heralded their appearance?

Answer: Rooster

Just as Gandalf and the Witch King of Angmar were facing off, a rooster suddenly crowed, singing like an alarm clock that the new day was here. Just as if they were replying, the horns of Rohan sounded, bringing hope to the defenders in their desperate plight, and defiance to the armies of Sauron. "Rohan had come at last."
9. The charge of the Rohirrim overthrew the Haradrim during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, but the horses of Rohan refused to go near what of the enemy?

Answer: Oliphaunts

The Oliphaunts were huge beasts, from Sam's description seeming like enormous elephants. The Southrons came to battle on them, and when their armies broke before the Rohirrim, they rallied behind the Mumakil, or Oliphaunts. Ultimately, all of the beasts were slain in the battle.
10. Just as Gondor and her allies' plight was getting worse, ships belonging to the Corsairs of Umbar came in sight, having been commandeered by Aragorn, along with some of his kindred. What was the name of his kinsman, the one who led the Dunedain to Rohan?

Answer: Halbarad

In "The Two Towers", Halbarad met Aragorn in Rohan, bringing with him some of the Dunedain, sent by Lady Galadriel. Along with Legolas, Gimli, and the sons of Elrond, the Dunedain followed Aragorn through the Paths of the Dead and on to the Pelennor Fields, where they arrived in the nick of time. Halbarad died in that battle, but Minas Tirith was for a time saved.
