Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what part of Cirith Ungol was Frodo held by the Orcs?

Answer: At the top of a turret on the third tier

Cirith Ungol had three tiers. At the top of the third tier was the entrance to the turret. On the second floor of the turret was a passage, which contained a trapdoor on the ceiling. A ladder up through the trapdoor allowed access to the topmost room, that was used as Frodo's prison. One of the rooms leading off from the passage was the Look-out Room.
2. Sam never wore the One Ring inside Mordor.

Answer: False

Sam entered Mordor with the Ring on his finger, but took it off immediately, after having a premonition of danger.
3. Half way down the path to the main gate, Sam saw two orcs being killed with arrows. What were their names?

Answer: Lagduf and Muzgash

They were both Orcs from Gorbag's band from Minas Morgul and were the last of those orcs to be killed. Ufthak was an orc who went wandering into Shelob's lair; Mauhur was the name of the orc who led the reinforcements who arrived for the battle with the Rohirrim, before Merry and Pippin entered Fangorn; Radbug was the name of an orc that was killed by Shagrat; Gothmog is a Morgul lieutenant at the battle of Pelennor fields.
4. Mount Doom can be seen from Cirith Ungol.

Answer: True

The burning mountain could be seen far away to the east.
5. Where did Shagrat go when he left Cirith Ungol with all the gear he found on Frodo?

Answer: Barad-dûr

Shagrat left on foot to Barad-dûr, although he probably got a horse further down. Horses were just entering Cirith Ungol, just as Frodo and Sam had left. The nameless lieutenant, known as "The Mouth of Sauron", took it to the Morannon gate which is located at Cirith Gorgor.
6. After Frodo and Sam escaped, a Nazgûl sent some orc trackers after them. Where did the orcs think they had lost their scent?

Answer: Between the thorn thicket and the point where Frodo felt a Black Rider overhead

This was where Frodo took off his mail-shirt, and left it on the ground. Gollum, who had been following, picked it up and according to the tracker, messed up the scent. But they must somehow have gone the right way. The tracker killed the fighting orc about 20 yards from where the hobbits were lurking, after an argument about where the scent went.
7. Sam had borrowed Sting whilst in Shelob's lair. Where in Mordor does Frodo give Sting to Sam?

Answer: While travelling the Morgai

Sam was given it just after seeing the orc trackers. Frodo was carrying an orc blade, should need arise. Frodo gave it to Sam for the second time after the celebration feast in Ithilien. Later still Bilbo again gave Sting to Frodo in Rivendell.
8. On which road did Frodo and Sam fall in with a band of Orcs?

Answer: Between the Castle of Durthang and the Isenmouthe

Frodo and Sam joined the road four miles from the orc-hold. They had gone about twelve miles when the Orc band caught them. As it was dark they were mistaken for stragglers and forced-marched a further eight miles. The orcs were going east to join the Dark Lord's host in Udûn. Frodo and Sam escaped in the confusion after a band of uruks from Barad-dûr arrived at the Isenmouthe at the same time.
9. After they left the orcs, how many miles did Sam reckon there were to Orodruin?

Answer: 50

Sam said "It looks every step of fifty miles". In reality it was 62 miles. Sam also reckoned it would take seven days to get there, but it actually took six.
10. Sam knew that Gollum was following him, after overhearing the orc trackers. Where does Sam first sight him in Mordor?

Answer: At the point where Frodo stops going mainly north, and starts to go east

This was just a few miles from the old castle of Durthang, where they had stopped to rest. Sam had left Frodo to get some water, when he turned back he saw Gollum near Frodo's hiding place.
11. Sam carries Frodo near the end of their journey, as Frodo finds the weight of the Ring too great. What does Sam describe carrying Frodo as being like?

Answer: A child on his back

Sam was already in torment, he was so parched he couldn't even swallow food. He was quite surprised at how light Frodo was, he was expecting him to be a "Dreadful dragging weight".
12. Which of these places has the highest elevation?

Answer: Cirith Ungol

Just before they get onto the road between Barad-dûr and Sammath Naur, Sam notes that the mountain is "less lofty than the high passes of the Ephel Dúath which he and Frodo had scaled". Cirith Ungol was at the top of the pass. Minas Morgul is to the west and below Cirith Ungol, and Osgiliath below that.
13. Sam used the Phial of Galadriel in the Sammath Naur.

Answer: True

It was not working very well so close to Sauron's forge, but he did use it.
14. Which of these items did Sam still have with him, after the ring had been destroyed in the Crack of Doom?

Answer: The elven rope he got from Lórien

This was one of the few things Sam saved when he threw their gear down a gaping fissure; he stored the rope in his pack. A short bit had been cut as a belt for Frodo. Sam had left his sword with Frodo in Shelob's Lair, it was part of the gear Shagrat took to Barad-dûr.
15. Which of Frodo's fingers did Sméagol bite off when getting his precious?

Answer: Third finger of his right hand

Frodo was invisible when Gollum fought with him. Gollum broke his teeth getting the Ring, before falling in to the fiery gulf.
