Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Strike at Shayol Ghul" is presented to the reader as a document recovered from the time of the War of Power. The manuscript is introduced by the Royal Historian to the Court of Her Most Illuminated Majesty, Ethenielle Kirukon Materasu, Queen of . . .

Answer: Kandor

And the title continues, "Protector of the Land, Shield of the North, High Seat of House Materasu."
2. What was the name of the Queen's Royal Historian?

Answer: Jorille Mondevin

Ellaine Marise'idin Alshinn is Chief Librarian at the Court of Arafel and a translator of the Karaethon Cycle; Charal Drianaan to Calamon is a translator of the Cycle of the Dragon; Latra Posae Decume was a leader within the Hall of Servants during the Age of Legends.
3. The manuscript that tells of the events of the strike was found in a dusty storage room in a chest full of old bills and receipts, student's copy books, and private diaries. In what city was this storage room in?

Answer: Chachin

Chachin is the capital city of the country of Kandor.
4. How many pages of the manuscript survived?

Answer: 212

Of the 212 surviving pages, the longest number of consecutive pages is 6 and elsewhere in the manuscript no more than 2 consecutive sheets. A coherent picture of the events was difficult to piece together.
5. The manuscript showed that the forces of the Shadow tried to curry favor from the inhabitants of the territories they occupied.

Answer: False

The forces of the Shadow were willing to starve or murder a great percentage of the population in occupied territories. This saved much in the way of resources required to fight the battle against the forces of Light, and they made steady headway in the fight.
6. The forces of Light were steadily losing the battle to the forces of the Shadow, when two different plans were proposed to make a pre-emptive strike to end the war. Who proposed a plan that involved using two large sa'angreal to drive back the forces of the Shadow and erect a barrier around Shayol Ghul until a safe method of sealing the Bore was found.

Answer: Latra Posae Decume

Lews Therin Telamon (the Dragon) supported an attack at the Bore and sealing it with seven focus points. The risk with his plan was that there was a possibility that the Bore would be ripped wide open if their efforts failed.
7. The other plan proposed a raiding force of how many soldiers as security for an Aes Sedai effort at sealing the Bore?

Answer: 20,000

Support for his plan called for a circle of seven female Aes Sedai and six male Aes Sedai. It was believed that that was the minimum number that would be needed to accomplish the sealing of the Bore.
8. The Hall of Servants was divided between the two proposed plans, but because the line of division was between the men and the women, the Dragon's plan could not be carried out, as it called for both male and female Aes Sedai. A difficulty arose for the women's plan when forces led by this Forsaken took control of the territory where the sa'angreal's controlling ter'angreal were hidden.

Answer: Sammael

With control of the sa'angreal lost (but thankfully, not actually found by the Forsaken), Lews Therin Telamon looked to carry out his plan once more.
9. Many young male Aes Sedai were in support of Lews Therin Telamon's plan, and a number of them joined him when he decided to go ahead with his plan regardless of whether the women were with him or not. These men were called the Hundred Companions. How many were there, actually?

Answer: 113

The Dragon also managed to put together a security force of 10,000 soldiers, none of whom survived the attack.
10. A twist of fortune found all thirteen of the Forsaken within the Bore when Lews Therin and the Hundred Companions struck. The men were successful in their effort to seal the Bore, but at a price. The Dark One's counterstrike put a taint on Saidin, the male half of the True Source, instantly driving Lews Therin and the surviving Aes Sedai insane. How many men (including Lews Therin) survived the attack?

Answer: 69

With the victory at Shayol Ghul, the War of Power came to an end. But the Dark One's counterstrike made it a victory of ashes as it also heralded the beginning of the Breaking of the World. Before it was realized that Saidin was tainted, all the other male Aes Sedai who had not been involved in the attack also went insane, prolonging the Breaking, remaking the world to what it is today.
