Answer: Sir Henry Clithering

Sir Henry Clithering starts the ball rolling telling stories. He is a retired police officer so has many cases and mysteries at his disposal.
2. What was Mrs. Jones' death initially thought to have been caused by?

Answer: Ptomaine poisoning

Initially the cause of death was thought to have been ptomaine poisoning after Mrs. Jones, her husband and companion had bad tinned lobster at dinner. However, after she was exhumed it was found that she died from arsenic poisoning.
3. What was the name of Mrs. Jones' companion?

Answer: Miss Clark

Her name was Miss Clark. Sir Henry Clithering tells how she was rather a stout woman.
4. How much did Mr. Jones inherit on his wife's death?

Answer: £ 8000

He inherits £ 8000 on her death. The maids in the hotel he stayed at saw his blotting paper and believed that it said he would inherit "hundreds and thousands" of pounds. Something which interests Miss Marple.
5. What had Mr. Jones asked the cook to make for his wife to drink?

Answer: Cornflour

It is suspected that this is how someone administered the fatal dose of arsenic to Mrs. Jones but it turns out that Miss Clark actually drank it instead as she had been banting and hadn't eaten very much at dinner.
6. Which of the group is the first to put forward their solution to the problem?

Answer: Dr. Pender

Dr. Pender is the first to proffer his solution, although he does not guess correctly. Naturally, it is Miss Marple who gives the correct solution.
7. Who was Mrs. Jones' murderer?

Answer: Mr. Jones

It was Mr. Jones who killed his wife after getting the cook, Gladys Linch, "in trouble". He had promised to marry her after his wife was out of the way.
8. How was the arsenic administered?

Answer: On the trifle

Although all of these were consumed in the house on that night, the arsenic was in the sugar hundreds and thousands on the trifle. Miss Clark was banting and couldn't eat trifle and Mr. Jones scraped his off. It was the mention of hundreds and thousands on the hotel blotting paper that made Miss Marple think of this.
9. It was Gladys Linch that eventually confessed what had happened. Why did she do that?

Answer: She was dying

Mr Jones abandoned Gladys Linch after killing his wife. Miss Linch gave birth to Mr. Jones' baby but it died at birth. She was dying herself and wanted to confess before that happened.
10. Miss Marple draws on a village parallel to help her solve the problems. Who is the village parallel in this case?

Answer: Mr. Hargreaves

Although all of these live or have lived in St Mary Mead, it was Mr. Hargreaves that Miss Marple thought of. He died and left all his money to the family's old housemaid by whom he had 5 children.
