Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was 'The Wee Red Book' first published?

Answer: 1928

Some less earth shattering events for Scottish football fans in 1928 were that women aged 21 or older were given the right to vote and Scots Doctor Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin.
2. What was the original name of 'The Wee Red Book'?

Answer: The Evening Times Football Annual

The book took its original name from the Glasgow newspaper that published it.
3. How many pages does the 2009 edition of 'The Wee Red Book' contain?

Answer: 240

The book has increased in size over the decades. When I bought my first copy back in about 1963 it was considerably smaller than today's publication.
4. What was the score between Scotland and England the year 'The Wee Red Book' was first published?

Answer: England 1 Scotland 5

It was the year of 'The Wembley Wizards' who thrashed the English on their own patch. The five Scottish forwards that day, although they became sporting giants, lived up to the theme of this quiz, all being a bit on the wee side, Alex Jackson at 5 feet 7 inches was the tallest of them.
5. What are the dimensions of the 2009 edition of the book?

Answer: 5.5 inches by 3.3 inches

Designed to be portable, the book fits nicely into an inside jacket pocket.
6. Why did the book disappear for six years?

Answer: Outbreak of the Second World War

There was no 'Wee Red Book' between 1940-45, however almost immediately the war ended and football restarted, it was back on sale again.
7. What was included for the first time in the 2008-2009 'Wee Red Book'?

Answer: Scottish Women's Premier League Tables

In 1928 women no longer had to be 30 years old to be able to vote in British elections; the law was changed so that women had the same rights as men and could vote at the age of 21. 'The Wee Red Book' took 80 years to afford the ladies the same type of parity.
8. What colour was the cover of the first ever "Wee Red Book'?

Answer: Blue

Keeping a blue cover wouldn't have done much for sales to supporters of teams who play in other colours. The nature of Glasgow football fans is such that a perceived neutral colour, (not the blue of Rangers or the green of Celtic) would give the book a more universal appeal.
9. Rangers had their own version of "The Wee Red Book'; what was it called?

Answer: The Wee Blue Book

The Rangers version was very similar to 'The Wee Red Book', with fixtures, past results, and the like. In recent years the powers that be at Ibrox decided to stop issuing the book but fan power resulted in it being brought back. The Rangers book is now used to publish songs that are allowed to be sung at Ibrox and is used as a weapon against sectarianism.
10. In the first full season in which the book was available, which two teams replaced Arthurlie and Bathgate when they resigned from the league?

Answer: Brechin and Montrose

During season 1928-9 many smaller Scottish clubs were facing financial difficulties. The creation of a third division in 1923 was thought by many to be a bad idea at the time. A country of Scotland's size could not support 56 senior clubs.
11. What regular feature disappeared from the book in the 1992-93 edition?

Answer: Names of players who won League caps

Inter-league games go back as far as 1892 when the English League and the Scottish League first clashed ending in a 2-2 draw. Dave Mackay and Denis Law both played several times for the English League and Mackay even turned out against Scotland for the English.

The last match between the Scottish League and the English league was on St. Patrick's Day 1976 at Hampden Park when the English won 1-0 with a goal from Trevor Cherry. In previous years such fixtures had attracted crowds of up to 70,000, however on that night only 8,874 poor souls turned up, yours truly being one of them.
12. Which team won the Scottish Cup for the first time in 25 years in the year 'The Wee Red Book' was first published?

Answer: Rangers

Rangers beat Celtic 4-0 in the Cup Final that year to complete the League and Cup double.
13. Later to be known for wearing 'wee red shorts', who appeared for the first time IN THE SAME year AS 'The Wee Red Book'?

Answer: Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse first appeared in the 1928 movie 'Steamboat Willie'. Although it was originally in black and white, prints were later produced showing Mickey wearing his red shorts.
14. In 1966 another small red book appeared and had a much larger distribution than our 'Wee Red Book'; who was its author?

Answer: Chairman Mao

It is estimated that about five billion copies of Chairman Mao's 'little Red Book' featuring his words of wisdom were printed. The first foreign language edition of Chairman Mao's book was published in English in 1966 although the original Chinese first edition appeared in 1964.
15. Born in the same year as the book was first published, Ernesto Guevara de la Serna would have approved of the title of 'The Wee Red Book'. By what name is he better known?

Answer: Che Guevara

Che Guevara, the Argentine-born communist revolutionary, was born in 1928 and was shot in Bolivia in 1967. The only football link I found regarding Che Guevara was that Thierry Henry wore a red Che Guevara T-shirt when he came second to Ronaldinho in the 2004 'World Footballer of the Year Award'.
