Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To disguise Arthur's identity as a baby, Uthr and Ygrainne switched Arthur with whose baby?

Answer: Caromy's

"The babes were exchanged, a deception to shield Uthr's first-born from Vortigern's spite."
2. Who was the first to swear an oath of allegiance to Arthur when he was made King?

Answer: Cunedda

"Unexpected, Cunedda knelt before the lad, offering his sword as a token of his loyalty. Few heard the words he spoke, above that tumult of approval raised by those watching men. It did not matter, all knew the oath of allegiance. 'To you, lord, I give my sword and shield, my heart and soul. To you, lord, I give my life, to command as you will.'"
3. Which of Arthur's sons was "First born, last dead"?

Answer: Llacheu

Arthur had three sons born to Gwenhwyfar - Llacheu, Gwydre, and Amr. Llacheu was the first to be conceived, after that, Cerdic (Winifred and Arthur's son), Gwydre and then Amr. Later on came Archfedd (Gwenhwyfar's and Arthur's daughter) and Medraut (Morgraine and Arthur's son). Amr died when he was 2, he drowned. Gwydre was killed when he was 8, on his first hunt, by a boar. Llacheu, first born last dead, was killed in the battle between Arthur and Heuil. Cerdic went on to become Arthur's successor. Archfedd doesn't die in the three books, and Medraut dies in the last battle, along with his father, Arthur.

There was a son born to Mathild, however, we are not sure if it is Arthur's son or Cerdic's, although we are given hints that the son is of Arthur's seed.

This son, Cynric, doesn't die by the end of book three and supposedly goes on to rule when Cerdic's rule is over.
4. What object did Arthur name his horse Onager after?

Answer: Roman catapults

The Roman Catapults were renowned for their dangerous kickback after firing. The horse Onager was always in a bad mood; ears always flat, and feet kicking if anyone got too near. Arthur named his horse Onager after Roman Catapults because they both had powerful kicks.
5. What term of endearment does Arthur use for Gwenhwyfar?

Answer: Cymraes

Cymraes fach means little British woman, Arthur dropped the fach when he took Gwenhwyfar as his own and just called her Cymraes.
6. It was said that " no man who held that sword [Caliburn] could be slain, save by the cunning and strength of..." a what?

Answer: a dragon

"Aethal had boasted he could best any fire-tongued beast, dared such a monster to come within range of this blade. They had all laughed... Yet none of them had realised the hidden danger and mocking truth. It was no beast that rose superior, but a man. The Pendragon."
7. What was the war cry of Arthur Pendragon?

Answer: Cymry

" 'I speak to you in Latin, the tongue of the Empire because our fathers and fathers' fathers did so. Today, despite our Roman laws and our Roman speech, we think of ourselves not as Roman but as British. Bound together, we are the Cymry, fellow native-born countrymen. This, then, shall be our call, my countrymen. We shall cry "Cymry!" ' The war cry of Arthur Pendragon. The King."
8. Mathild gave instructions that should something happen to her, to tell Gwenhwyfar that she believes Arthur to be alive with someone in Gaul. With who?

Answer: The ladies of the Goddess

"And that the Pendragon might be alive, not dead as they were all meant to believe. A secret Mathild had kept to herself, sharing it only with them, her few trusted, loyal, personal guard. 'Tell Gwenhwyfar,' she had commanded of them. 'If something should happen to me, tell Gwenhwyfar that I believe Arthur to be with the ladies of the Goddess in Gaul.'"
9. While in Gaul with Morgaine, Arthur dreamt of three women. Who were they?

Answer: Gwenhwyfar, Winifred, Morgaine

"He had tried to call, attract their attention, but they were intent on watching the boat. And then Gwenhwyfar had turned, but she had not seen him, was unaware that he was there. His sword was in her hand - and then she and Winifred and the boat that carried Morgaine were gone."
10. What was Caer Morfa renamed after Cynric took it for his own?

Answer: Natan Leag

Natan Leag means the Forest of Natanlius, the former owner of the Caer. Natanlius was butchered when Cynric's supposed father ordered it, a slow painful death, one that Cynric was opposed to. Cynric renamed the Caer in memory of Natanlius.
11. Which character in the books would reflect the "Sir Gawain" of the more familiar legends?

Answer: Cadwy

"My version of the story of 'the Loathly Lady' - Ragnall - does not quite follow the known tale, for mine is more of an interpretation on a theme; and of course I have substituted Cadwy, Ambrosius Aurelianus's son, for the Sir Gawain of the more familiar medieval legend."
12. Which character in the books represent "Mordred"?

Answer: Medraut

"As for Medraut, the Mordred of later tales, he is usually portrayed as the traitor, the one who fought against his father - but an early poem does not support this. 'The battle of Camlann in which Arthur and Medraut fell...' There is nothing here to suggest that they fought on opposing sides."
13. What words did the British write for Geraint after he died?

Answer: After the war cry. Bitter the grave.

"Geraint's death at the battle of Llongborth is fact. An early Welsh poem describing the event is highly dramatic and so sad. 'After the warcry, bitter the grave'. It was a battle that heavily featured cavalry, and is one of the first poems to mention Arthur's men."
14. In the second battle between Arthur and Cerdic, the Saxons besieging Caer Morfa say that it was the Wild Hunt and the Huntsman himself was there. Who were they describing as the Huntsman?

Answer: Ider

"Indeed, had that not been the Huntsman himself out in the front? An oak of a man, as tall as that tree, as broad, as strong. Dressed in red cloak, white tunic, the uniform of the Artoriani - his roaring voice, his sword whirling pounding death on all who had the misfortune to be in his crazed path."
15. Helen Hollick used Geoffrey Ashe's theory in her book "The Shadow of the King". Who did Ashe say Arthur could have been?

Answer: Riothamus

"...[Ashe's theory] suggested that Arthur could have been Riothamus, a war leader who did exist... Riothamus was the King of the Britons... The battle at Deols was fought between 'the British' and the Goths. Syagruis's army did fail to arrive, and the British were slaughtered. Riothamus fled into Burgundy and was never heard of again."
