Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this book, Lucas Trask sells his Barony of Traskon for enough credits to get a spaceship built so that he may go hunting the man who killed his wife. What book is it?

Answer: Space Viking

In the beginning of the book, Lucas Trask is to get married to his one true love and his wedding is interrupted by Andray Dunnan who is apparently unbalanced. Andray Dunnan shoots up the wedding including the bride to be and the groom. The bride dies but Lucas Trask lives and gives up all he owns to purchase a spaceship to chase Andray Dunnan down.

In a game of hide and seek Lucas Trask restores some semblance of civilization on older planets. It was the first book I read by H. Beam Piper at the age of 13 and I became a fan of his for the rest of my life. I am now 50 and still read his books now and again!
2. In the book "Little Fuzzy" we are introduced to a new species on the planet Zarathustra. They were found by Jack Holloway. They may be proved to be a 'sapient' species. Why was this significant?

Answer: It changes the status of the planet

As a Class III uninhabited planet, Zarathustra was chartered to the Zarathustra Company. This in effect meant that the Company owned the planet. If the species can be proved to be sapient, this would change the status of Zarathustra to Class IV inhabited and the Company's charter and privileges would be over.
3. Conn Maxwell comes home to Litchfield on the planet, Poictesme. He then helps in the search for a Super Computer that is supposed to cure all the world's ills. The name of the computer is Merlin. The book's original title was "Junkyard Planet". What is the name of the book?

Answer: The Cosmic Computer

The search for Merlin leads to many discoveries of equipment leftover from the last galactic war which can be sold off-world for money that is then used to restore civilization on Poictesme. In this day of large books and multiple book series' this is a quick solid read.
4. The book "Uller Uprising" is based on a significant event in history. What event are we talking about?

Answer: The Sepoy Mutiny in India

In the Uller Uprising a company on another planet is using the local population as laborers, foremen, police and army. Something causes them to revolt against the company troops and the company must put down the revolt. Another good solid Sci-Fi read from H. Beam Piper.
5. In "Lone Star Planet" the planet is known for one main export. What is it?

Answer: Supercow

Lone Star Planet is part of a two-part book by H. Beam Piper. The other part of the book is called Four-Day Planet. Two great ideas under one cover ... YEAH!
6. In "Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen" the main character is Calvin Morrison. What is his occupation and in what state of the United States is he from?

Answer: State Trooper in Pennsylvania

This is one of H. Beam Piper's many Paratime novels. Corporal Calvin Morrison is somehow transported to a different version of the past of his world. The technology is similar to that of the English Civil War while the area the book covers is that of a Pennsylvania that you and I (and Corporal Morrison) have never seen.
7. In the book "Four-Day Planet" what is the significance of the title?

Answer: The planet makes 4 rotations (days) in a standard year

In "Four-Day Planet" the planet Fenris is a very inhospitable planet. The planet's rotation and trip around the sun make it one tough place to survive, let alone eek out a living. The only 'work' is as a 'monster hunter'. Hunting and killing sea-monsters for their tallow-wax.
8. What is the favorite food of a "Fuzzy"?

Answer: Land Prawn

One of the reasons that Fuzzies are found in "Little Fuzzy" is because they began to migrate from their normal living areas to follow the migration of the Land Prawn. It is not until later that Jack Holloway finds out that they have also developed a taste for Extee Three because it contains more "hokfusine" than what they gained from Land Prawns.
9. What is it about the book "First Cycle" that sets it apart from the majority of most Science Fiction books?

Answer: It is a story about 2 "alien" species

This is a book that follows 2 races on 2 different planets from their very beginnings until they eventually meet each other after becoming space explorers. When H. Beam Piper wrote it almost every other Science Fiction book in print dealt with at least one race in the book being human.
10. H. Beam Piper died before his works could be truly appreciated. He left behind tons and tons of notes about his "Universe". He left behind timelines, thoughts, ideas etc... There is another famous Science Fiction writer who has the legal right to all of this and the rights to expand and expound on all of Piper's work. Who is this writer?

Answer: Jerry Pournelle

Before becoming a writer Jerry Pournelle met H. Beam Piper and they became friends from the start. H. Beam Piper was almost twice Pournelle's age. The legal rights to Piper's works were given to Pournelle by Piper himself, before Pournelle ever thought about writing Science Fiction.

In Pournelle's words "Beam apparently knew my future better than I did." Piper's extensive notes, maps and all have never been found, but belong to Pournelle should that "gold mine" ever be found. One thing that any who knew H. Beam Piper would say is what Jerry Pournelle said of him. "He was a cavalier."
