Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Lords of Andúnië share a common ancestry with Ereinion Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor.

Answer: True

This is true indeed. The Lords of Andúnië (the last lord was Amandil, father of Elendil, Aragorn's distant ancestor) descended from Silmariën, the daughter of the fourth King of Númenor, Tar-Elendil. The Kings of Númenor descended from Elros, the first King (who named himself Tar-Minyatur). Elros and his brother Elrond, both Half-Elfs were the sons of Ëarendil the Mariner (also a Half-Elf). His mother was Idril, daughter of King Turgon of Gondolin. Turgon was the brother of High King Fingon the Valiant and Fingon's son was Ereinion Gil-galad. The common ancestor of the Lords of Andúnië and Gil-galad thus is the father of Fingon and Turgon, High King Fingolfin.

Some sources trace the parentage of Gil-galad to the line of Fingolfin 's brother Finarfin. In this case the common ancestor would be their father Finwë, the first High King of the Noldor.
2. Arwen has Maia blood in her veins.

Answer: True

Arwen's blood is quite mixed. She has blood of all the three Elf races, Man and Maian. Arwen is the daughter of Elrond. Elrond's father was Eärendil, who was a son of Tuor (man) and Idril daughter of King Turgon of Gondolin. Turgon has some Vanyar blood through Indis, second wife of Finwë, his grandfather. Turgon's wife Elenwë was one of the Noldor and perished at Helcaraxë. Arwen receives Noldorin, Vanyarin and Mannish blood through this line. Elrond's mother was Elwing, the Daughter of Dior and Nimloth. Dior was the son of Beren (Human) and Lúthien Tinúviel. Lúthien was the daughter of King Thingol of Doriath (full Teleri, Sindarin) who was wedded to Melian the Maia (the only one of the Children of Ilúvatar to ever marry one of the Ainur). Nimloth was a Sindarin maiden, a daughter of Celeborn's brother Galathil, grandchild of Elmo, the younger brother to Elwë (Elu Thingol) and Olwë. So Arwen receives Mannish blood, Telerin (Sindarin) and Maian blood from this line (Mannish, Maian and Telerin from Dior and even more Telerin (Sindarin) from Nimloth).

Her mother was Celebrían, daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel. Celeborn was a full Teleri (Sindarin). Galadriel is a difficult matter again. She was the daughter of Finarfin, son of Finwë, and Eärwen, a full Teleri (unlike all other Teleri mentions in this paragraph she is not one of the Sindar, Teleri Elves that remained in Beleriand. She is the daughter of Olwë, the brother of Thingol, who became Lord of the Teleri in Aman while Thingol became Lord of the Teleri in Beleriand. The Teleri in Beleriand were known as the Sindar). Finarfin's mother was Indis (he's brother to Fingolfin), second wife to High King Finwë of the Noldor. She was one of the Vanyar and through her Arwen receives a few more spatters of Vanyarin blood. To summarize: Arwen is 2/64th part Maian, 12/64th part Mannish and 50/64th part Elvish (of which 34/64th Telerin (8/64th of Telerin from Aman of Eärwen and 26/64th Sindarin from the line Thingol and from Celeborn), 5/64th Vanyarin (of the line of Celebrían and Eärendil) and 11/64th Noldorin (from the line of Turgon and Celebrían)). Revised: 9th January, 2004 (Previous versions of this quiz had taken Turgon for a full Noldorin Elf, not taking into account that he was 1/4th part Vanyarin, from his grandmother Indis, mother to his father Fingolfin and also grandmother to Galadriel through the line of his uncle Finarfin). If anyones thinks I'm still wrong, please let me know (though this not affect the question's answer since Arwen has, with no doubt possible, Maian blood in her veins).
3. Which nephew of Erkenbrand of Westfold fell on the Pelennor?

Answer: Dúnhere

Dúnhere, Lord of Harrowdale, was a nephew of Erkenbrand and fought in defense of the Fords of the Isen. He was then mustered for the Ride of the Rohirrim to Gondor and was slain on the Pelennor. His relationship to Erkenbrand is mentioned in the notes on the chapter 'The Battles of the Fords of the Isen' in the 'Unfinished Tales' (note 13). Grimbold was a lesser Marshal of the Mark, also from the Westfold and friend of Erkenbrand.

He also fought at the Fords of the Isen and wrestled with Saruman's forces for the body of Théodred, son of the King. Grimbold lead one of the three front éoreds on the Pelennor (the others by Éomer and Elfhelm) and fell before the Mundburg. Dernhelm was the disguise of Éowyn who had was not allowed to ride to Gondor.

She slew the Witchking of Angmar, Lord of the Nazgûl, with the help of Holdwine (otherwise known as Meriadoc 'Merry' Brandybuck). She was healed by King Elessar and married Faramir of Ithilien after the War of the Ring. Elfhelm was the First Marshal of the Mark and fought at the Isen and later on the Pelennor.

He survived and under his command Cair Andros was retaken while King Elessar went East to challenge Sauron. Elfhelm survived the War of the Ring and became Marshal to King Éomer.
4. Who is the last of the Petty-Dwarves?

Answer: Mîm

Mîm and his sons, Khîm and Ibun, were the last of the Petty-Dwarves. Nothing more on them is known except that their race was banished from the great Dwarven-realms long ago. The three were encountered by Túrin and his outlaw band. Khîm was killed by an arrow and Mîm was captured.

In exchange for his life he let the outlaws dwell in his secret house, Amon Rhûd. He and his son were captured by Orcs one night and Mîm lead the Orcs to his house again in exchange for his life. All outlaws except Túrin and Beleg were slain. Beleg was left for dead but he survived and Túrin was taken away. Mîm outlived his son Ibun and found his way into Nargothrond, after it had been ravaged by Glaurung.

After Glaurung's death, Húrin, Túrin's father, found his way to Nargothrond and he slew Mîm for his betrayal of his son. So ended the line of the Petty-Dwarves. Durin VI was a King of the Dwarves of Moria and a direct descendant from Durin the Deathless, one of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves.

He was slain in III, 1980 in Moria by a Balrog, whom the Dwarves had awoken from it's sleep by mining for mithril (hence "Durin's Bane").

After the death of his son Náin I, also slain by the Balrog, the Dwarves fled from Moria and would eventually establish the Kingdom under the Mountain in Erebor.
5. Who were the nephews of Thorin II Oakenshield?

Answer: Fíli and Kíli

Fíli and Kíli and were the sons of Dís, sister of Thorin Oakenshield. She is the only Dwarf woman ever named by Tolkien. Fíli and Kíli fell in defense of Thorin in the Battle of the Five Armies. Óin and Glóin were the sons of Gróin and both went to Erebor with Thorin. Gróin descended from the Durin the Deathless, his grandfather being one of the sons of King Náin II (great-great-grandfather of Thorin Oakenshield). Óin was killed in Moria when Balin tried to reclaim it. Glóin was the father of Gimli. Balin and Dwalin were the sons of Gróin's brother Fundin, who fell in the Battle of Azanulbizar before Moria. Balin and Dwalin also accompanied Thorin on his quest to Erebor. Like Gróin and his children they were of royal descent from Durin. Balin lead the Dwarven expedition to Moria and was killed by Orcs as Lord of Moria. Dwalin did not accompany him and died of old age in the Fourth Age. Nori and Ori were also Dwarves of Erebor but more remote kinsman of Thorin. Nori was said to still dwell in Erebor during the Council of Elrond.
6. Who was the son of Bolg?

Answer: There is no recorded son of Bolg

There is no recorded son of Bolg. Bolg was the son of Azog who murdered Thrór, King of the Dwarves from Durin's line and a Ringbearer of the Dwarfrings. This triggered the Dwarf war for revenge and Azog was slain by Dáin II Ironfoot of the Ironhills, cousin of Thorin and also of Durin's line. Bolg lead the Orcs of the Misty Mountains into the Battle of the Five Armies where Thorin and his companions and 500 of Dáin's Dwarves were about to engage the Elves of Mirkwood and Men of the Lake. Bolg was crushed by Beorn, who was enraged at Thorin's death. Nahar was the steed of Oromë the Great and Drauglin was the Lord of the Werewolves.
7. Meriadoc (Merry) is of what Hobbit Family?

Answer: Brandybuck

Meriadoc is a Brandybuck and related to Peregrin Took and Frodo Baggins and Bilbo Baggins (all four can be traced back 'The Old Took', Gerontius). The Gamgee family is not related to the Tooks, Brandybucks or Bagginses.
8. Who was the friend of Sméagol, whom Sméagol killed?

Answer: Déagol

Déagol, a Stoor, a kind of Hobbit that lived at the Anduin, found the One Ring in the Anduin. He was murdered by Sméagol who took the Ring and called himself Gollum. Fréagol is made up by me.
9. Who is not one of the Istari, the Wizards that came to Middle-Earth?

Answer: Círdan

The five Istari are Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Alatar and Pallando. The last two, the Blue Wizards went to the far East of Middle-Earth and were never heard from again. Radagast the Brown settled in Rhosgobel near Mirkwood and became involved with all beasts and animals of Middle-Earth not paying much heed to his task, to foil Sauron (although he eventually did by sending Gwaihir to rescue Gandalf). Saruman the White was recognised as the most powerful and wise of the five and was appointed as their leader.

He went first to the East before settling in Isengard. There he betrayed the Eldar and all free people by switching sides to Sauron. He was killed in the Shire by Gríma Wormtongue. Gandalf the Grey was the last Wizard to arrive. He received Narya, the Ring of Fire from Círdan the Shipwright and Gandalf was instrumental in the defeat of Sauron.

He fell in battle with a Balrog but being one the Maia his spirit survived and was re-embodied and he returned as Gandalf the White to finish his task. Círdan the Shipwright was a Lord of the Teleri and was one of the Elves that awoke at Cuiviénen, thus possibly being the oldest Elf left in Middle-Earth.

He never sailed into the west but remained in Beleriand like King Elwë Singollo (Elu Thingol). He was Lord of the Falas in the First Age but moved to the Isle of Balar after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, taking with him Gil-galad, who had been sent to Círdan by his father Fingon after the death of High King Fingolfin. He founded the Grey Havens, west of the Shire in the Second Age and dwelled there. He received the Ring of Fire from Gil-galad and marched with him in the Last Alliance. He gave his Ring to Gandalf when he arrived in the Third Age. He prepared the ship that would take Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf, the ring-bearers and all the remaining Noldor to Valinor at the end of the Third Age. What happened to Círdan is unknown. Some guess he sailed into West in the Fourth age as well but being one of the Teleri that had not sailed into the West before the First Age that is unlikely.
10. And finally, who was the son of Elendil that cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand?

Answer: Isildur

Isildur, son of Elendil, cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand after he had been overthrown by Elendil and Gil-galad. Anárion was the younger son of Elendil. Melendil was Anárion's eldest son and Valandil was the youngest son of Isildur who was in Rivendell when Isildur was killed with his two elder sons at the Gladden Fields. I hope you enjoyed my quiz.
