Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Oldest and Fatherless', Iarwain Ben-adar is known by many names. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Olórin

Iarwain Ben-adar is the biggest riddle of all of Tolkien's creatures. He claims to be "eldest", and "first", but is not one of the Ainur. Perhaps he is Eru Ilúvatar himself, but as a part of Middle-earth history, he takes no part although he definitely exists. Nature interests him, but not politics, and he lives in the Old Forest with his spouse, Goldberry the River-daughter.
2. What was the name of the woman at the Houses of Healing whose verses helped find the true King?

Answer: Ioreth

Ioreth was the eldest of the women at the Houses of Healing in the time of the War of the Ring. Her words "the hands of the king are the hands of a healer" set the path for Aragorn to heal Faramir, Merry and Éowyn. She came from Lossarnach in Gondor, and was present at the crowning of the King.
3. Of what race was Ibun son of Mîm?

Answer: dwarf

Ibun was the second-last of the Petty-dwarves, a race of dwarves shorter than the true dwarves. They lived in the Middle-earth in Beleriand, and died out late in the First Age. They were descended of dwarves from the far east that had been banished (reportedly).

When Ibun and Khîm, the two sons of Mîm the Petty Dwarf, fled from Túrin Turambar and the outlaws that came upon them suddenly, an ill-fated arrow was shot by one of Túrin's band and it struck Khîm in the back, killing him instantly. Ibun survived and lived with Mîm in the House of Ransom, but apparently died later on, as Mîm is quoted as saying to Húrin years later "I am the last of my people".
4. This man cut off the One Ring off of the Dark Lord's hand, but died as it betrayed him, along with his three eldest sons:

Answer: Isildur

Isildur was the heir of Elendil, and the short lived King of both Arnor and Gondor after the death of Elendil at the hands of Sauron. Isildur was on a sortie at the Gladden Fields where his party was waylaid by orcs. Isildur attempted to slip away using the invisibility the ring gave him, but it slipped off his finger while he was attempting to swim over the Anduin River. Isildur was seen helpless in the water and was shot by orcs, the ring was washed away by the river.
5. Idril, daughter of King Turgon of Gondolin, received her surname Celebrindal for which of the following reasons?

Answer: she would often walk barefoot

The daughter of King Turgon, she fell in love with Tuor from the moment he walked into Gondolin. Their son was Eärendil the Mariner. Maeglin son of Eöl was in love with Idril, and for that love and out of jealous anger at Tuor, Maeglin betrayed the position of the Hidden City of Gondolin to Morgoth. Soon, his forces overran Gondolin, and Idril and Tuor barely escaped with their son.
6. What was Imrahil's title after the War of the Ring?

Answer: Prince of Dol Amroth

Imrahil came from a long line of nobility, see question 9 for its beginnings. At the time of the War of the Ring, Imrahil rode to the defence of Minas Tirith, and fought alongside Aragorn and Éomer. It was Imrahil that discovered on the field of battle that Éowyn was still alive (by holding a bottle up to her lips).

Tolkien notes that Imrahil had three children: three sons, Elphir, Elchirion and Amrothos; and one daughter, Lothíriel. Lothíriel wed Éomer Éadig and became queen of Rohan. Imrahil's sister Finduilas was the wife of Steward Denethor.
7. Who was the eldest child of Indis?

Answer: Fingolfin

Indis was Finwë's second wife, after Míriel passed away after giving birth to Fëanor. Indis had two sons, Fingolfin the eldest and Finarfin the youngest. Indis was of the Vanyar, and would not come to the Middle-earth with her sons, especially after Finwë was slain at the entrance to Formenos.
8. What was the birth name of King Tar-Palantir of Númenor?

Answer: Inziladûn

Tar-Palantir was the 24th King of Númenor. In his time, Númenóreans had turned their anger against the Vala who lived in the Undying Lands, and the few who remained true to the teachings of the Vala were known as 'the Faithful'. The Faithful were persecuted, but unknown to Ar-Gimilzôr (the 23rd king), his consort Inzilbêth had raised their only son Inziladûn in the ways of the Faithful.

Inziladûn took the throne in the Quenya name Tar-Palantir. His ways were repentant, and would have been continued by his daughter Míriel, but she was forcibly wed by Pharazôn, the son of Inziladûn's younger brother Gimilkhâd. Ar-Pharazôn was a proud and strong King, and brought down Sauron, but due to the corruption of Sauron, he became vain and arrogant, and set sail for Valinor. The moment he set foot on Valinor, the island of Númenor sank back into the sea, and only a few survived and made it to the Middle-earth, led by Elendil and his sons.
9. Imrazôr the Númenórean wed an elf maiden.

Answer: True

It's the fourth union of Eldar and Edain mentioned in Tolkien's work. Imrazôr lived in Belfalas, in Gondor, and came upon Mithrellas, a lost companion of Nimrodel. He took Mithrellas in, and eventually wed her. Their first son, Galador, was the first of the Princes of Dol Amroth, named in honour of Nimrodel's lost love, Amroth.
10. Name the High King of the Elves, who rules in Taniquetil:

Answer: Ingwe

Ingwë awoke at Cuiviénen, and led the host of the Vanyar on the Great Journey to Aman. He rules in Taniquetil to this very day (beneath the Halls of Manwë), and although he is of the Vanyar, he is considered High King of all the Elves.
