Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The mother of Elwing shared a name with the scion of Celeborn of Tol Eressëa, a scion of Galathilion of Tirion. What was her name?

Answer: Nimloth

Nimloth was the daughter of Galathil, who was the brother of Celeborn of Lórien. She wed Dior Eluchil, while in Doriath, and they made their home at Tol Galen, and later at Menegroth. Her daughter was Elwing. Nimloth was killed by the Sons of Fëanor, although Elwing managed to flee in the shape of a white bird with the Silmaril of Beren on her breast.
2. Who was the daughter of Húrin Thalion that comitted an unthinkable act with her brother, although unknowingly? When she found out, she took her own life.

Answer: Nienor

Nienor Níniel was the daughter of Morwen and Húrin Thalion and the youngest sister of Túrin Turambar. She was separated from Túrin in childhood, but came to Doriath in search of him. Glaurung the Golden, Dragon of Melkor had other plans...

The dragon put her under a spell, and when Nienor came to Brethil, she did not recognize her own brother. They unwittingly fell in love, and were married. When the dragon told Nienor, she could scarcely believe her ears, but after Túrin killed Glaurung, she came out of her swoon, and realized that she had committed an unthinkable act - incest. She threw herself over the cliffs to her death, and Túrin followed suit, casting himself on his Black Sword.
3. Who was the second King of Gondor to die childless? (Although for most of his reign he didn't rule anyway...)

Answer: Narmacil I

Atanatar II Alcarin left Gondor in a glorious state... and his son Narmacil didn't want to be burdened with the weight of the Kingship. He appointed his nephew Minalcar to be the regent, and took the rest of his 54 years off. Narmacil died childless, only the second king of Gondor to do so.
4. Náin, father of Dáin Ironfoot, was King of Durin's Folk when he was slain in Moria.

Answer: False

Náin was a descendant of Durin the Deathless, but not the King. He fought bravely in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs, but was slain in the Battle of Azanulbizar. Náin's father was Grór, the dwarf who founded the realm in the Iron Hills, and was the younger brother of Thrór. Thrór inherited the Kingship from his father Dáin I, but Thrór's line failed when his son Thráin II, and his grandson Thorin II (Oakenshield) were both eventually killed.

Náin was the father of Dáin II (Ironfoot), the only direct remnant of the line of Durin, and he inherited the Kingship when Thorin was killed at the Battle of Five Armies. Dáin II did not venture into Moria, and was content to rule over the Iron Hills and Erebor, but he allowed Balin to attempt to retake Moria.
5. She was the beloved of the King of Lórien, and was to journey with him to the West. She got lost in the White Mountains, and the two never met again. What was her name?

Answer: Nimrodel

Amroth of Lórien loved Nimrodel, and despite the fact that he was Sindarin, he fashioned his ways after the Silvan elves out of love for Nimrodel. Nimrodel would not marry Amroth until he brought her to a "land of peace", and Amroth vowed to leave his own people for her.

They planned to set sail "over the Great Sea into the ancient West", meaning to Aman, because the Middle-earth was seething with Orcs at the time. They made way to Gondor, where the Elven-havens were, but along the way in the White Mountains, they were separated. Amroth sought Nimrodel, but couldn't find her, and eventually made it to the Elf-haven, where he convinced the last seaworthy ship there to wait until Nimrodel arrived.

Weeks they waited for Nimrodel, but she didn't show up. One night at the end of autumn, a great storm blew in from the North, fierce and strong. The elves sheltered inside the ship, and when they woke up the next morning and looked out, they were already miles from shore, as the storm had blown them out to sea. Amroth in a fit of despair jumped in to the sea and swam to shore, but it was too far, and halfway there, he drowned.

Of Nimrodel's fate, none is certain, but it is said she wandered the area of the White Mountains for years, searching for Amroth.
6. In Tolkien's "The Hobbit", is Nori the brother of Ori?

Answer: No

Nori, Ori and Dori all arive at Bilbo's Hobbit-hole at the same time, but nowhere in the entire story does it state that Nori was related to either Ori nor Dori. Even if they were related, which is conceiveable, Nori and Dori would have been brothers, as they arrive wearing the same colours (purple hoods) while Ori os slightly different (a grey hood).

In Bilbo's house, Nori played the flute, but little else is known of him. His most memorable act in "The Hobbit" is to tell Dori to help Bilbo into a tree when the Wargs attack Thorin's expedition.
7. Whose tears washed away the filth of Ungoliant in Arda?

Answer: Nienna

Nienna was the Queen of grief and mourning of the Valar. She would often dwell in her brother Námo's halls at Mandos, consoling the souls that rested there. Olórin (Gandalf) was said to have learned much from Nienna. Nevertheless, there is not much said of this Ainu.
8. Finrod Felagund received a surname from the men of the First House of the Edain. What was it?

Answer: Nóm

Nóm was the name given primarily by Bëor the Old to Finrod, as it means 'wisdom'. Bëor intended this as Finrod was learned in the Mannish tongues, and spent much time among the First House of the Edain.
9. Mandos the Vala is known as Mandos because that is the name of the Halls he dwells in. What is his true name, given in the Valaquenta?

Answer: Námo

Námo is the keeper of the Houses of the Dead, and the master of the spirits. He is considered the Doomsman of the Valar, as he is the most gifted of all the Valar in foresight. He dwells in the Halls of Mandos where the dead arrive, and is the spouse of Vairë.
10. This artisan of the Dwarves made the 'Doors of Durin' for the west-gate of Moria. What was his name?

Answer: Narvi

Narvi was a craftsman of Khazad-dûm who had a close friendship with Celebrimbor, Elf of Eregion. Together they joined forces and made the invisible doors at the western gate of Moria, the very same that the Fellowship of the Ring encountered. Narvi lived in the time of King Durin III, but little else in known of his life.
