Corntel asked Lynley for help when schoolboy Matthew Whateley had disappeared. Initially Lynley refused, until they found out that Matthew had been murdered.

Answer: West Sussex

Barbara Havers criticized parents who send their children to a boarding school. This school doesn't really exist, but is inspired by several English independent schools. Elizabeth George always takes photos of locations she wants to use in her novels.

Edward Hsu was a Chinese pupil who killed himself after being seduced by Brian's mother. (In the TV adaption Patsy Whateley was Matthew's biological mother.) Brian's father Giles took financial responsibility for Matthew. As a board member he arranged a scholarship for him at Bredgar Chambers.
10. Where was Matthew murdered?

Answer: In the fume cupboard in the chemistry lab

Brian Byrne killed Matthew to win Chas Quilter's lifetime loyalty. The official cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.
