Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. R. A. Salvatore.
Answer: Drizzt Do'Urden
R.A. Salvatore's popular character in the "Forgotten Realms" setting is called Drizzt Do'Urden. Drizzt is a drow elf who has turned his back on the evil ways of his race and has left the Underdark to live on the surface. Living on surface has not been easy for Drizzt due to his skin colour; being a black skinned elf on the surface marks him out straight away as drow elf, which causes fear and terror to most surface dwellers. Drizzt has appeared in over thirty "Forgotten Realms" novels, various graphic novels and video games.
2. J. K. Rowling.
Answer: Dobby
Dobby's first appearance in the Harry Potter series of novels by J. K. Rowling was in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". In the novel, Dobby is a house elf who is bound to serve the Malfoy family. Dobby tries to protect Harry throughout the novel and in return Harry tricks Lucius Malfoy into releasing Dobby. Dobby's final appearance is in the novel "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in which he is killed by Bellatrix Lestrange, after rescuing Harry from Malfoy Manor.
3. Raymond E. Feist.
Answer: Pug
Pug is a magician that has featured in various novels by R. E. Feist. Pug first appeared in the novel "Magician" as a kitchen boy working in Crydee. A meeting with the magician Kulgan changed his life forever, as he ends up being Kulgan's apprentice. Due to the events in the Riftwar, Pug finds himself a slave on the world of Kelewan and, again due to a chance meeting, he ends up being taken by a magician of the black robes to learn the magic of the Greater Path.
In later novels written by Feist, Pug learns various forms of magic and becomes one of the most powerful magicians on the world of Midkemia.
4. Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.
Answer: Flint Fireforge
Flint Fireforge is a Hill dwarf who first appeared in the novel "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Flint is getting on in years and struggles to keep up with his younger companions such as Tanis, Caramon, Sturm and Tas. Due to this, his mood is, shall we say, quite grumpy. Still despite this, one of my favorite memories is from the book "Dragons of Spring Dawning" in which Flint and Tasslehoff ride a bronze dragon into battle. During the battle Flint's helmet keeps slipping over his eyes, which isn't helped by Tas banging on it in excitement. Flint sadly dies in this book due to his age and is taken away by Fizban, the good god Paladine in disguise. Fizban lets Tas know that Flint is now going to rest his back against Reorx's forge in the hope that this will comfort Tas.
5. Janny Wurts.
Answer: Korendir
In the novel "Master of Whitestorm", the character Korendir escapes from a galley crewed by slaves, and in the escape he takes his companion Haldeth. He and Haldeth travel to Whitestorm where a vain weather elemental controls the area in order to build his fortress home. Korendir gains control of the Whitestorm cliffs and undertakes various dangerous missions to fund the building of his fortress, in which he takes on witches and were-leopards.
The novel was written by Janny Wurts, who has also co-authored the "Empire" series of books with Raymond E. Feist.
6. Robert E. Vardeman and Victor Milan.
Answer: Erimines the Ethical
Erimines the Ethical is a long-dead person whose ghost is now trapped in a spirit jar, similar to a genie but without the power to grant wishes. He is a character who appears in the books "War of Powers" and "War of Powers part 2: Istu Awakened" written by Robert E. Vardeman and Victor Milan.
When he was alive, Erimines lived and preached a life of abstinence. However despite having held this goal in life, Erimines changed his mind in death and encourages the courier Fost to have sex whenever possible.
In "War of Powers part 2: Istu Awakened" Erimines does get to have a sex life when a nun who followed Erimines' teachings, called Ziore, and also in a spirit jar, is found by Princess Moriana. When the two ghosts realize they can touch each other they become all lovey-dovey, whereas before they despised each other intensely.
7. Ed Greenwood.
Answer: Elminster
Elminster is a powerful wizard in the "Forgotten Realms" setting and is a character associated with the books written by Ed Greenwood. In the "Spellfire" novel he is one of those who help to protect and teach Shandril Shessair to control the spellfire ability.
The ability that Shandril has allows her to absorb spells and unleash the spells' energy to kill or heal. Through her travels in "Spellfire" and "Crown of Fire" she encounters many of the major characters that have appeared in other "Forgotten Realms" books.
8. J. R. R. Tolkien.
Answer: Gollum
Gollum first appeared in J. R. R. Tolkein's book "The Hobbit", and also appeared in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Smeagol first acquired the ring by killing his cousin who wanted to keep it for himself; however, the ring had gotten a hold of Smeagol. Due to the mischief he caused amongst his kind he earned the nickname Gollum and was banished by his fellow Stoor Hobbits.
He went to live in a cave, and the power of the ring helped to keep him alive close to six centuries. Despite being a sad sight in the "Return of the King", he inadvertently defeated Sauron by fighting for the ring with Frodo, destroying the ring and himself in the lava of Mount Doom.
9. Richard A. Knaak
Answer: Huma
Huma is a Solamnic Knight who had attained the rank of Knight of the Crown, an order of knights in the Dragonlance setting. In the novel "The Legend of Huma", written by Richard A. Knaak, Huma falls in love with women called Gwyeneth. Sadly, this love is tragically doomed, as the woman is a silver dragon in disguise. Riding Gwyeneth in the final battle wielding the dragonlance, Huma and Gwyeneth perish in this battle to drive Takhisis, the goddess of evil from the world of Krynn.
10. Barbara Hambly
Answer: Sun Wolf
In the novel "The Ladies of Mandrigyn", written by Barbara Hambly, Sun Wolf is a mercenary captain kidnapped by the ladies of Mandrigyn. The kidnapping takes place so that Sun Wolf can teach the ladies how to fight, so they can take down a wizard who has taken all the men to work in his mines.
They are successful against the wizard Altiokis and free the Mandrigyn men. However, due to feeling empowered, not all the ladies are keen to go back to how things were before the men folk were taken by the wizard.
