In "A Bridge Too Far", Connery played Major General Urquhart, commander of the British 1st Airborne Division, responsible for capturing the bridge over the Rhine river at Arnhem. Connery won an Oscar for his role in 1987's "The Untouchables". He played Jimmy Malone, a street cop disgusted with rampant corruption among police who should be enforcing alcohol's prohibition.

In "A Bridge Too Far", Olivier played the minor role of Doctor Spaander, who helps the British 1st Airborne establish a field hospital. Later he gets the Wehrmacht to accept the wounded paras as POWs. He won an Oscar for the title role in the 1948 film "Hamlet". "Hamlet" also won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Black-and-White), and Best Costume Design (Black-and-White).

In "A Bridge Too Far", Schell played SS-Obergruppenführer Wilhelm Bittrich, commander of the II Panzer Corps. This was the armored force which prevented operation Market Garden from succeeding. Schell won an Oscar playing defense counsel Hans Rolfe in "Judgement at Nuremberg" a 1961 movie about German war crimes surrounding WWII.

Redford won an Oscar directing "Ordinary People", a drama starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Judd Hirsch.

In "A Bridge Too Far", Hackman played General Stanisław Sosabowski, commander of the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, who were to fight along with the British 1st Airborne Division. In 1971, Hackman played detective Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle in "The French Connection", winning the Oscar for Best Actor. Twenty-one years later, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in "Unforgiven". Hackman played antagonist Little Bill Daggett, a former gunfighter turned sheriff.

In "A Bridge Too Far", Hopkins played Lieutenant Colonel John Frost, commander of the British 2nd Parachute Battalion. With about 750 men, he captured the northern end of the Rhine bridge at Arnhem, holding it for four days, two more days than plans called for 9,000 men to capture and hold the bridge.

In 1991, Hopkins played one of the most sinister villains in movie history, winning a Lead Actor Oscar as Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

In "A Bridge Too Far", Caine played Lieutenant Colonel Joe Vandeleur, commander of 3rd Battalion, Irish Guards. His unit was the vanguard of the British XXX Corps, the ground force tasked to link up with all the airborne units securing bridges. Caine won two Best Supporting Actor Oscars.

In 1987, he won playing Elliot, a man who falls for his wife's sister in Woody Allen's comedy/drama "Hannah and Her Sisters". In 1999, he won playing Dr. Wilbur Larch in "The Cider House Rules".
9. "The Godfather" (Supporting Actor Nomination)

In "A Bridge Too Far", Caan played Staff Sergeant Eddie Dohun, (character based on Staff Sergeant Charles Dohun) who takes his badly wounded captain to a field hospital. When the surgeon refused to operate because the captain was morbid, Dohun charged his Colt 1911 pistol and aimed it at the doctor. Surgery was conducted. Captain LeGrand "Legs" Johnson survived his injuries. Caan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Sonny Coreleone in the 1972 film "The Godfather". Co-stars Al Pacino and Robert Duvall were also nominated for the same award.
10. "Love Story" (Leading Actor Nomination)

Answer: Ryan O'Neal

In "A Bridge Too Far", O'Neal played Brigadier General James Gavin, commander of the US 82nd Airborne Division. In 1970's romance "Love Story", O'Neal played Oliver, opposite Ali MacGraw's Jenny. He was nominated for Best Actor.
