Gus is a little boy who doesn't get very much attention from his parents, is very protective of his sister Rosie, and isn't into daisies and roses. After some time with Stanley he blooms into the lovable caring person he was meant to be. Rosie is still very young and is fascinated with Stanley's ability to grow things.

When Gus takes his little sister Rosie to the park to play with his boat, Rosie slides into a hole in the wall and discovers Stanley.

Gnorga is the feared ruler of the Troll Kingdom who hates everything nice and sweet. She is furious when she finds out that Stanley has been planting his very own garden right underneath her nose and threatens to turn him into stone. When King Llort suggests a different penalty that he says will be a slow and painful, Queen Gnorga banishes Stanley to New York, Manhattan and lands him right in the middle of Central Park.

Stanley has a green thumb that lets him grow things and Gnorga has a thumb that lets her turn things into stone. At the end of the movie Stanely gets turned into stone, but is brought back to life by Gus who uses his momentary green thumb.
