Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Arthur Kirkland and Gail Packer (Christine Lahti) first meet face to face?

Answer: Beside a water fountain

The fountain was in a hallway. They met after Arthur had stormed out of an Ethics Committee meeting. He felt that the committee was "dangerous". Gail Packer, who was part of the committee, was angry at him for saying this. He then asked her for a date and she accepted.
Christine Lahti had said she was nervous about playing opposite Al Pacino in her first movie. She definitely did not need to have worried, she was very good.
2. After Arthur and Gail's first date, they went to his apartment. They brought dinner with them. What type of Take Out was it?

Answer: Chinese food

They bought Chinese food, identified because of the number of containers on the counter. The argument continued about the Ethics Committee. Gail Packer (Christine Lahti) was for it and Arthur (Al Pacino) was very much opposed to it. She said "At least we don't sit in jail overnight, because of contempt of court." She was alluding to Arthur's recent stint in jail for attempting to strike a judge.

The judge Arthur had attemped to strike was non-other than Judge Fleming, played by John Forsythe.
3. In the hallway, Arthur was stopped by Warren Fresnell (Larry Bryggman), a fellow lawyer. "Arthur! you will never guess who was just arrested?" Arthur was not amused, "Who Warren?" he snapped. "A judge" replied Warren. Who was the judge arrested?

Answer: Judge Henry Fleming

Judge Henry Fleming, was a man who considered himself to be the pinnacle of honesty and integrity. He was always immaculately dressed, verbally terse and impatient with anyone who approached him. He treated people with disdain and self-righteous indignation.
Warren could bearly contain himself. "I don't know the reason yet" he said. This was the first time Arthur had heard about the arrest. He was shocked yet amused! But the best was yet to come!
4. Two fellow lawyers, (Warren Fresnell and Jay Porter), caught up with Arthur in a hallway. They both grabbed Arthur and dragged him into a washroom. Between fits of laughter, they told him who had been chosen to defend Judge Fleming. Who was the Defence Lawyer chosen?

Answer: Arthur Kirkland

Arthur did not believe his ears! "Why me"? The laughter in this scene was infectious. The three lawyers laughed to a point just short of hysteria!
Arthur was told that the reason he was chosen was the fact that he hated Judge Fleming. Therefore if he represented him, everyone would have assumed the judge was innocent. Arthur told Judge Fleming "If you truly were innocent, you wouldn't need me."
5. Ray Porter (Jeffrey Tambor) positioned himself at the end of a corridor and was wildly throwing things at anyone who tried to approach him. What was he throwing?

Answer: Plates

He was throwing dinner plates. Lawyer Ray Porter (Jeffrey Tambor) learned that a man he had once defended, and had been subsequently acquitted, had murdered again. Ray Porter's breakdown was fueled by the guilt he felt when he learned this fact.
He had collected large white plates from the cafeteria, carried and stacked them on a cart in a fourth floor hallway. He had amassed hundreds of them, for him they were a perfect missile and also a dangerous one. He threw them in rapid succession, making it almost impossible for anyone to approach him.
He was eventually distracted and tackled to the floor by a group of men; a judge, lawyers and a policeman. The scene of this breakdown, was extremely powerful, and very believable.
6. Ray Porter was placed in an ambulance, ready to be taken to hospital. Which lawyer accompanied him?

Answer: Arthur Kirkland

Because he was Arthur's partner, Arthur went in the ambulance with him. Before he got into the ambulance, Arthur gave Aggy's probation report to Warren Fresnell. There were errors on the original report, which Arthur had corrected. "I need you to accompany my client Ralph Aggy, to court at 3:00pm." He continued "Make sure you give the judge this corrected report, and Aggy should be acquitted." The client was the young black man suspected of complicity in the robbing of a taxi driver.

The judge dispensed with the case so quickly that Warren Fresnell did not have time to show the corrected probation report to the judge. Ralph Aggy was sentenced to five years in jail.
7. Warren Fresnell was driving his car when Arthur blocked the car's path. Warren had to brake abruptly, as Arthur pounded on the car with his briefcase. Arthur yelled at him twice, "get out of the car." Warren gingerly complied. Where was Warren's car when this scene took place?

Answer: At the exit of courthouse garage

Warren was driving out of the garage when Arthur stepped in front of his car. His anger at Warren was explosive and physical! He used his briefcase to smash the windshield, and used it again to attack the doors of the car. As an added measure he also kicked the doors of the car. Warren did not know, at this point, that the client of Arthur's, Ralph Aggy, was dead. The man he had accompanied to court in Arthur's stead, had hung himself in his jail cell.
The energy and rage exhibited by Arthur in this scene was frightening. (This was an explosive scene for Al Pacino, both verbally and physically, that some viewers saw as an 'over the top, out of control' tirade). This depiction of frustration, anger and sadness was how he believed his character would have reacted when he learned of Ralph Aggy's suicide. "Ralph Aggy did not have to die!"
As Director Norman Jewison said, "He is very much in control, that is what makes him such a good actor." As a dedicated Pacino fan I would agree with him.
8. Arthur went to visit Judge Fleming, to plead again for Jeff McCullaugh, an innocent victim, who was still in jail 18 months after being picked up for a broken tail light. Where was the unusual place the meeting took place?

Answer: An outdoor, covered pool

This outdoor, covered, inground pool was a steamy, (actually smokey), surreal location for a meeting, but it worked very well in the movie. Arthur again tried to plead with the Judge, who continued swimming, to help free his young, innocent client, Jeff McCullaugh. "No deal" was basically the response, Arthur left while the judge, unaware of Arthur's departure, was still pontificating.
(Director Norman Jewison chose this location for this meeting because he liked the odd, almost surreal, atmosphere it presented).
9. Arthur was called to the prison where Jeff McCullaugh had taken two hostages, and tied them up. They were in a prison hospital room. The young client, Jeff, was crouched in the corner of the room, his hostages lying helpless on the floor. Arthur pleaded with him to give himself up, "You can't win Jeff" What happened when Jeff stood up to straighten his cramped legs?

Answer: He was shot.

Jeff McCullaugh was shot by armed police, who had surrounded the building where he was holding his two hostages. Innocent and imprisoned for the minor misdemeanor of a broken tail light, he was also being held on suspicion of another crime in Alabama.

He had protested his innocence, saying it was someone else with the same name, but they arrested him anyway. This was another emotional scene; having already lost one client, Arthur implored Jeff to surrender. Jeff had suffered much abuse from other inmates, plus the fact that he was innocent, sent him over the edge.

He knew Arthur had tried repeatedly to have him released. He held no animosity toward Arthur. This was Arthur's second client to die.
10. Arthur was sitting on a bench, looking depressed and dejected, somewhere outside the courthouse. As a group of people passed by him he suddenly got up and followed them, what were they doing?

Answer: Running

This was the way Director Norman Jewison tried to show the attempt made by Arthur to relieve the emotional turmoil he felt, built up after two of his clients had died. He sprinted behind the other runners until he came to the side door of the courthouse. As he was about to walk up the steps to the entrance he heard someone shout his name, and beckon him to get into the car parked at the curb. The driver of the car was his first client Carl Travers. Travers was the man in the car accident at the beginning of the movie. He told Arthur he had some powerful evidence against Judge Fleming!
