Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to the Magi, Brian was born under which sign of the Zodiac?

Answer: Capricorn

Mom: "Capricorn, eh; what are they like?"
Magi: "He is the son of God, our Messiah, King of the Jews."
Mom: "That's Capricorn, is it?"
Magi: "Oh, no, no, no, that's just him."
Mom: "Oh, I was going to say, otherwise there'd be a lot of 'em."
I don't know which is funnier; the fact that mom has no idea why her brat is the object of praise, or that these so-called "wise men" don't know they've stumbled into the wrong stable.
2. Although we never actually get to see Brian during puberty, the title song tells us of several changes that Brian went through during his teens. Which of these is NOT among those changes?

Answer: He grew to hate the Romans

The title song tells us that as Brian became a teenager:
"...Yes, his face became splotchy. And his voice dropped down low..."
I don't suppose I need to quote the entire song, you all know it by heart. Suffice to say, the song makes no mention of his politics.
Much as the Gospel of Matthew skips directly from Jesus as an infant to Jesus as a grown man, the film moves straight from the manger to the Sermon on the Mount. Lucky for us, we have the opening credits and this wonderful song to fill in the blanks.
3. While it might be expedient to blame the Romans for the present condition of the Jewish people, Reg pontificates that another group are the real problem. On whom does the PFJ's self-appointed leader lay the blame?

Answer: The Meek

Reg and the PFJ are clearly not impressed with Jesus' 'Sermon on the Mount'. In agreeing with Francis' statement "...blessed be just about everybody with a vested interest in the status quo." Reg lays the blame directly where he thinks it belongs: "What Jesus blatantly fails to appreciate is; it's the meek who are the problem."
4. Matthias is the wretched soul sentenced to death by stoning, for the unforgivable sin of blasphemy. Can you name the condemned man's father?

Answer: Deuteronomy

As the charges are read, the blasphemer is clearly identified as "Matthias, son of Deuteronomy of Gath." Deuteronomy, meaning 'second law' is the fifth book of the Old Testament. Gath was an ancient Philistine city-state, destroyed in 800-900 BC. An unlikely combination for a name, but it sounds both serious and silly enough to work in this film's context.
5. As told by the ex-leper, what was Jesus' response when the begger complained that he'd been robbed of his livelihood?

Answer: "There's just no pleasing some people."

After listening to the begger's tale of woe, Brian drops a coin in his cup.
Ex-leper: "Half a denari for me bloody life story?"
Brian: "There's just no pleasing some people."
Ex-leper: "That's just what Jesus said."
Three of the four Gospels tell of Jesus curing leprosy (Matthew 8:1-4, Mark 1:40-45 and Luke 5:12-16). I must admit that each time I hear any of these scriptures read in church, I have to fight against the urge to giggle at the thought of the Son of God being seen as a "bloody do-gooder."
6. Brian is shocked when his mother tells him the truth about his ancestory. The Roman soldier, known to her as Naughtius Maximus, had promised her "the known world" and "as much gold as I (she) could _______."

Answer: eat

I've often wondered just how much gold Mandy actually thought she could eat. Oh well, it makes no difference anyway. We all know what happened after he'd "had his way" with her; "...off, like a rat out of an aqueduct." The anachronistic reference to the "known world" is a line that just cracks me up every time I hear it; brilliant comedy writing!
7. On his job as a colosseum vendor, Brian earns a meager living selling exotic snacks rather than what faithful Israelites would consider "proper food". Which of these "imperialist tidbits" do Reg and the PFJ eventually order?

Answer: Otter's noses

Apparantly peckish enough to lower both his dietary and political standards, Reg not only gets a bag of otter's noses for himself, but buys another for Francis. Although I can't find the specific article for citation, I remember, years ago, reading a John Cleese interview in which he said the prop food used in this scene was actually sliced ripe olives. Brian's menu also includes: Larks' Tongues, Ocelot Spleens, Chaffinch Brains, Dromedary Pretzels and Tuscany Fried Bats.
8. Brian's first task as a political activist is to paint the slogan "Romans Go Home" on the walls of the governor's palace. AFTER the Latin lesson, how is the slogan written?

Answer: Romani Ite Domum

Initially, Brian writes "Romanes Eunt Domus" which (according to the centurion) translates as "People called Rome, they go the house." While my knuckles still have scars from being struck with Sister Gabriella's ruler, at least she (my high school Latin teacher) never put a sword to my throat.
9. Reg is unable to take part in the raid on Pilate's palace because he has a "bad back". Oddly, he seems to have no trouble lifting the heavy iron grate that covers the drain. With what one word does Reg salute the others as he closes the manhole behind them?

Answer: Solidarity

Just another example of Reg's "do as I say, not as I do" management style. I once worked for a manager who was fond of establishing procedures that applied to everyone execpt himself; we used to refer to these arbitary policies as "Reg-isms" and would slyly give each other the 'PFJ salute' whenever one was introduced. We found this a great way to break the tedium of staff meetings.
10. Once inside Pilate's palace, the PFJ is surprised to find another group has also chosen this same night to kidnap the governor's wife. Which other group has 'stolen' their plan?

Answer: Campaign for Free Galilee

The Campaign for Free Galilee, complete with uniforms and their own official salute, has been planning this raid for months. The struggle between the two groups, of course, dooms the entire endeavor to failure.
11. After the failed raid on Pilate's palace, Reg and the others now undertake the solemn task of removing the names of those 'lost in action' from the PFJ membership roll. Which of these is NOT among those they cross off?

Answer: Jeremiah

Back at PFJ headquarters, Reg reads off the list of the departed, and Stan (aka Loretta) repeats each name as it is crossed off the list "...Job, Joshua, Judges, and Brian." Reg then makes a motion to nominate these heroes as "probationary martyrs to the cause." It's only later they discover Brian is still among the living. His martyrdom will have to wait.
12. Somehow the Roman palace guards have managed to follow Brian after his escape, and they raid the PFJ's official headquarters. The Roman's initial search turns up nothing, but when they return for a second look they find a __________. Fill in the blank.

Answer: spoon

"Found this spoon, sir".
"Good work, sergeant!"
The simple wooden spoon doesn't appear to have any special significance, but the centurion seems quite pleased with himself for having discovered it.
Is this the same spoon Stan/Loretta used as a pointer when "laboring the point" over the plight of their "fathers', fathers',fathers', fathers..."? I suppose that will have to remain a mystery.
13. The crowd that has followed Brian up the mountain is now hungry and needs to be fed. Brian points out some nearby shrubs and suggests they could eat the fruit. What variety of berry is produced by these 'miracle' bushes?

Answer: juniper

"Of course they've brought forth juniper berries, they're juniper bushes! What would you expect?" The hermit is furious with Brian. Brian has broken the hermit's foot, forced him violate his eighteen year vow of silence, and now he's encouraged the mob to 'clean up' on his only food source, the juniper berries.

Interesting info "not appearing in this film": juniper berries are the predominant flavoring agent in gin.
14. The governor's attempt to address the crowd is a disaster. Sensing the need to help Pilate gain control, his visiting friend reads aloud from the list of jailed prisoners. Which of these is NOT among those listed as potential parolees?

Answer: Sillius Soddus

Trading in one speech impediment for another does nothing to improve the situation. While our visiting dignitary from "Wome" might command a "quack wegion", his lisp just sends the "wabble of wowdy webels" further in to their hysterical frenzy. Another testament to the Python's research, all four gospels include Pilate's custom of granting a Passover parole as a central piece of Christ's Passion. Matthew 27:15, Mark 15:6, Luke 23:17 and John 18:39. Strange, there's no mention of Pilate sounding like Elmer Fudd.
15. Complaining that "Under the terms of the Roman occupancy, we're entitled to be crucified in a purely Jewish area," several of the crucifees object to sharing their execution site with members of which other group?

Answer: Samaritans

The guard soon solves the issue in democratic fashion; "All right, hands up, all those who don't want to be crucified here." The Samaritans and Jews each considered the others as unclean, defilers of the true faith; you know, splitters.
