Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the film, the shot zoomed in on a common traffic signal. Which signal was it?

Answer: Stop Sign

In this scene, the film was just starting. Tre and his friends were just about to appear, walking to school. I found this fascinating, because the director, Singleton, wants the violence to stop; but more importantly, he wants the unfairness to stop, and he zoomed in on that sign at the very beginning.
2. While walking to school, Tre and his friends saw a campaign poster of a presidential candidate. Which presidential candidate was it?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

A lot of African Americans believe that the Reagan Administration was responsible for the crack-cocaine epidemic. This movie deals with that topic. Tre and his friends had gone to see a crime scene when they saw that campaign poster.
3. While in the classroom, Tre's teacher offered him the chance to teach the class. Tre pointed to something and asked the class what it is. To what did he point?

Answer: Map of Africa

I think that scene is very important in the movie, because most African Americans don't want to associate with Africa. In that scene, Tre told the whole class that each of them was from Africa.
4. Tre's mother moved him from her house to his father's. What is the first chore Tre was instructed to do?

Answer: Rake the leaves

Tre arrived at his father's house. His father offered his friends a few bucks to rake the leaves. They refused. After they refused, Furious told Tre to rake the leaves, for no pay. The director probably put that in there to illustrate the value of discipline.
5. While fishing, Furious told Tre that there are three important things he must always do. Which one was NOT one of them?

Answer: Say hello to everybody you meet on the street.

In that scene, Furious gave fatherly advice to Tre. It revealed the character of Tre's father, Furious. It showed that he was a caring father who deeply loved his son. This movie did a great job revealing character. That scene was probably put in the movie to show the value of a father's advice.
6. During the first scene in 1991, whose party were the characters attending?

Answer: Dough Boy

Dough Boy was the at-risk protagonist of the movie. He was always getting in trouble. However, he was very intelligent. This was a great scene, because it showed that there's a celebration when someone gets out.
7. What was Furious' attitude about the SATs?

Answer: They are culturally biased; only the Math is universal.

After taking their SAT test, Tre and Ricky went to Furious' work place. They spoke to him about the test. It was there that Furious gave them his opinion about the SATs. That was probably put in there to address the fact that many African American kids feel cheated out of a fair chance to succeed because of the culturally-biased tests.
8. After the USC recruiter met with Ricky, and while he was leaving, one of the characters asked if he could get a scholarship too. Who was that?

Answer: Monster

Monster was one of the guys with whom Dough Boy spent a lot of time. The director probably included his request for a scholarship to show that even though some guys in the hood do bad things, they still want to get an education and be successful.
9. Which actor played the mailman who delivered Ricky's SAT scores?

Answer: John Singleton

The director, himself, made a cameo in the movie as the mailman. He is not really an actor, he was just making a cameo appearance in the movie. He directed movies like "Poetic Justice" and "Higher Learning" in the early '90s. However, his best work is "Boyz n the Hood". He even got an Oscar nomination for Best Director and Best Screenplay. This was truly a great film.
10. Of the "boyz", which one made it out of "the hood"?

Answer: Tre

Ricky was shot to death, and didn't get the chance to play football at USC. In the epilogue of the film, Dough Boy was murdered, two weeks after the burial of Ricky. Tre, however, left L.A. and went to Atlanta to attend Morehouse College. Tre was the main character, and because of his loving father disciplining him, he was able to successfully leave the hood.
