Because he knew of his nephew's knack for fighting, Cheng's uncle consistently reminded him of his promise every time he wanted to fight. He mentioned it about three times before he had to leave. The first time he mentioned it, to Cheng, was when they first got off of the boat.

The second time was when a bunch of goons started bothering a lady at refreshment stand. The final time was right before he got back on the boat.

Cheng went to work at the ice factory so he could contribute to his shared household. On his first day, he had some difficulty doing the work. In fact, he ended up being the one to uncover the secret of the plant, unbeknown to him, until much later in the film.

Answer: Drug smuggling

The secret was first discovered when Cheng was putting one of the large ice blocks onto a ramp, so it could slide into the next building. He pushed it too hard and it crashed through the side of the ramp, breaking into little bits, thus exposing the hidden packets of cocaine. Only two workers saw the drugs and they were later eliminated for it.

The truth was later revealed to Cheng by one of the boss's hired women.

Answer: They were stabbed

Because of their discovery, the two workers were originally offered one thousand dollars and a chance to work in the drug trade. They refused on the grounds that they were clumsy farm boys who would screw up the job. They also refused the money because they thought that they didn't earn it.

They promised not to tell the truth to anyone, but to make sure they wouldn't, the manager, signaled his men to stab both of them and grind them up.

Answer: Hsiu Chien

Hsiu Chen was first seen when a woman and child, near a drinking stand, were being tormented by some assailants. Hsiu Chen swiftly took care of them. The second time he fought was after revealing the cheating ways of a gambling club. Cheng wanted to join in but his promise forced him to merely spectate. Hsiu Chen was worried about the two workers, so he and another worker went to the boss's house to confront him.

They both fought valiantly against the boss's trained men, but they were stabbed to death and placed in blocks of ice, like the other two workers.

Answer: An enemy ripped off his necklace.

After the disappearance of Hsiu Chen, all of the workers at the ice plant went on strike until his return. To end the strike, a busload of men from the boss's mansion showed up to kill them. The striking workers were close to defeat when, out of nowhere, one of the enemies flew into Cheng and ripped off his necklace. With that, Cheng was finally allowed to fight.

He managed to scare the attackers away after defeating five of them with ease.

Answer: Cheng was appointed the new foreman.

When the manager asked for Cheng, the workers remained cautious so they waited nearby until Cheng left. Moments later, one of the factory manager's men went outside to post a piece of paper on the wall. The paper indicated that Cheng was the new foreman.

When the old foreman left the manager's office, the workers pointed and laughed at him. To celebrate, Cheng and his friends marched up and down the streets of town before Chow Mei made them feel guilty for forgetting about their search for her brother, Hsiu Chen.

Answer: He'd go to the police station and ask about the missing workers.

Because of that outrage, the workers refused to work when Cheng sounded the bell, saying that he let his new job get to his head. Because of the guilt, he went over to the "Big Boss's" house to further inquire about the whereabouts of the missing workers.

After giving the same excuse, that he (the boss) already tried to find them, Cheng walked away knowing that all the boss had said was a lie.

Answer: They were all murdered.

After becoming disappointed with the many women around him, the boss decided to find a new one. His son suggested that Chow Mei would make a great addition to his collection. After kidnapping her, at night, the men killed Cheng's friends in their sleep, including a small child.

Answer: He was arrested by the police for taking the law into his own hands.

After killing the "Big Boss" in a spectacular fight, Cheng continued to beat his corpse, because of the fact that he murdered all of Cheng's friends. The police arrived moments later. Chow Mei told him to give up and so he did as she told him. The message Bruce Lee purposely implied by that, was that every action has a consequence, no matter what the motivation for those actions are.
