Cat Call - Top Billing Please Trivia Quiz

Cats are natural actors when they choose to be. Humans don't have this innate talent and struggle to match feline ability. Recognition of cat talent is confined to the bottom of movie credits and it's high time this was addressed.

Question 1 of 10
1. A grey alley cat named Pepper was the first feline who deigned to make an appearance in some of Hollywood's early silent movies. Pepper rubbed shoulders with the best the screen had to offer. The cat quietly perfected acting skills opposite which famous talent of the day? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Pyewacket is the undoubted star in a film about witchcraft, love and spells. As the film follows a modern witch's attempt to snare the man she loves with a magic spell, the talent of the feline cast member is obvious. Describing the cat's role as a "familiar" is a poor ploy to highlight the mere supporting roles of Kim Novak and James Stewart. Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Audrey Hepburn is billed as the star of this delightful movie. She resists falling in love with the new tenant in her building as she intends on marrying a rich, older man. She discovers that things do not always go according to plan, and falls in love with the young man anyway. Truth be told, if her cat "Cat" hadn't run into the rain in the final scene of the movie, the ending would have been far less dramatic. After all a kiss in the rain while holding a wet cat - who could ask for more? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. While Art Carney may have received an Oscar for his role in this movie, the true plaudits should be reserved for a rather beautiful ginger tabby. Art's character suddenly finds himself homeless, so he takes his cat and begins an eventful journey across America. Human talent abounds in this movie of self discovery, it's true - but the fine feline acting should not be discounted. At least in this production, the Tabby talent has a title role.

Answer: (3 words 5, 3 and 5 letters)
Question 5 of 10
5. A space ship, crew deaths, hatching eggs, hulking slavering monsters, an intrepid heroine and of course the hero himself, Jones - make for another feline movie triumph!

Answer: (One word - 5 letters)
Question 6 of 10
6. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner play a warring couple in this comically tragic film. The division of spoils as their marriage crumbles is cleverly highlighted by the role feline star Tyler plays. The cat's fate is pivotal in accelerating the hatred and revenge in this black film. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. George Clooney provides another feline opportunity for stardom in this movie. Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer play two single parents caught with children who need minding while the parents meet important deadlines. As Clooney's character spends the day in various babysitting exercises, a certain small kitten manages to steal the show. Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. A unique feline talent appears in this next movie. A defrosted cat is companion to a villain who is holding the world hostage for one million dollars. The only hope humanity has rests with a badly dressed British spy with terrible teeth. This slightly chilly cat does not miss a beat when placed in front of the cameras with some of the best. Defrosting may have altered his appearance somewhat, but what price inscrutability? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Another ginger cat practically steals the show while teaming with Will Smith and Gene Hackman. Smith's character may well be in possession of a computer disc that others desperately want. He is forced to wrestle with the mob and unravel a conspiracy, as well as fighting to clear his name. Babe goes along for the ride, snugly ensconced in Gene Hackman's carry bag. This feline trooper barely bats an eyelid as the drama unfolds. What movie is the vehicle for this talent? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. When Ben Stiller's character Greg accompanies his girlfriend Pam home for the weekend, he is planning to propose to her. He has no idea of the mayhem that awaits him. Pam's father Jack is played by Robert de Niro, and the good impression Greg hopes to make is foiled by the movie's real star, Jinx. Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A grey alley cat named Pepper was the first feline who deigned to make an appearance in some of Hollywood's early silent movies. Pepper rubbed shoulders with the best the screen had to offer. The cat quietly perfected acting skills opposite which famous talent of the day?

Answer: All of these

Not much is known about this early star. There are several references to Pepper the cat accidentally wandering onto early Hollywood sets and simply staying. The cat featured in quite a few silent films with Chaplain, Arbuckle and also in Mack Sennett comedies. Pepper disappeared completely when co-star, Teddy the Great Dane, died.

Answer: Bell, Book and Candle

"Bell, Book and Candle" (1958) features Kim Novak as Gillian Holroyd, a modern witch who meets publisher Shep Henderson, played by James Stewart. Despite the fact that Shep is engaged to someone else, Gillian sets out to capture him for herself by casting a spell.
That Pyewacket, a Seal Point Siamese - is the star - is undeniable. He was awarded a Patsy for his role in the film - the animal equivalent of an Oscar!

Answer: Breakfast at Tiffany's

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) features Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly and George Peppard as Paul Varjak. While these two dance around each other and finally fall in love, Orangey plays the role of Holly's no name cat to perfection. A movie veteran, Orangey won two Patsy awards in his career and also starred in the television series "Our Miss Brookes".

Answer: Harry and Tonto

"Harry and Tonto" (1974) features Art Carney in the role of Harry Coombes. After losing his home, Harry sets off with his cat Tonto for an adventure across America. Tonto shows remarkable endurance in this role, highlighting his ability to allow almost endless petting and cuddling on command.

The illness and subsequent death of Tonto have allowed this movie to be ranked with some of the greatest tear jerkers ever.
5. A space ship, crew deaths, hatching eggs, hulking slavering monsters, an intrepid heroine and of course the hero himself, Jones - make for another feline movie triumph!

Answer: Alien

Alien (1979) features Sigourney Weaver in one of her most memorable roles. As one of only two survivors in this Sci-fi thriller, she supports Jones the cat in his highly acclaimed role. His understated approach to his character highlights the fact that this cat is an accomplished method actor. Pitting acute feline intelligence against an acid dripping alien is pure genius.
6. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner play a warring couple in this comically tragic film. The division of spoils as their marriage crumbles is cleverly highlighted by the role feline star Tyler plays. The cat's fate is pivotal in accelerating the hatred and revenge in this black film.

Answer: The War of the Roses

"The War of the Roses" (1989) is a black comedy about the very vicious end to a marriage. Oliver and Barbara Rose set out to avenge each other most horribly.
When Barbara feeds Kitty Kitty and ignores Oliver's dog Benny, she deliberately baits her husband. Oliver accidentally runs over Barbara's cat when Benny the dog is chasing it and the film really gathers speed - heading both characters towards disaster. Tyler the cat plays Kitty Kitty to perfection. Despite persistent denials, Popeye, who plays Benny the dog, and Tyler are close friends.

Answer: One Fine Day

In "One Fine Day" (1996), Clooney plays Jack Taylor to Pfeiffer's Melanie Parker. While he is babysitting both their children, Jack's daughter Maggie disappears. When she is finally found, she is clutching a small Bengal kitten. Film footage of Clooney with the tiny creature is pure movie magic! On a less whimsical note - two tiny Bengal kittens were needed for this exacting role, and were provided by the Aluren Bengal Cattery.

Answer: Austin Powers:International Man of Mystery

"Austin Powers:International Man of Mystery" (1997) introduces the world to Mr. Bigglesworth. A rare Sphinx cat which is naturally hairless, he is the perfect choice for Dr. Evil's feline companion. He apparently lost his hair when he was defrosted along with Evil.

His character is a direct takeoff of Blofeld's very fluffy Persian cat in the Bond movies. We are also solemnly reminded many times never to make Mr. Bigglesworth angry. As you well know - "when Mr. Bigglesworth gets angry - people die".

This is quite a lot of power for a cat that received almost no billing in the film.

Answer: Enemy of the State

"Enemy of the State" (1998) explores the world of listening devices and hi-tech surveillance. As Will Smith's character (Robert Clayton Dean) tries to avoid pursuit by those who feel he knows too much, he is put in contact with Gene Hackman ("Brill") and Babe, a large ginger Tabby. Only a seasoned feline veteran could have reduced our hero to an embarrassed heap as he tries to catch the cat in a building that's about to blow sky high.

The ability to ride nonchalantly in an old carry bag and eat unphased in a busy restaurant were pre-requisites for this role.

Answer: Meet the Parents

"Meet the Parents" (2000) features a cast that includes Stiller, de Niro and Blythe Danner. The acting honours for the role of Jinx are shared by two Himalayan cats, Bailey and Misha. Between them the cats manage to turn Grandma's ashes into kitty litter, ruin a wedding dress, escape to the rooftops and most wondrous of all...use and flush a toilet. While he was upstaged by Jinx's character during the movie, de Niro remains firm friends with his leading felines.

The author is left wondering just what it is about orange Tabby cats? Five of these questions featured beautiful ginger felines. Orangey, Jones, Tonto, Babe and I believe Tyler are all stunning orange cats. Oh - and I almost forgot...
