Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1941 I got a call from Universal Pictures, asking me if I had a wolf available for filming in the near future. The director, George Waggner, had a cast lined up which included Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, Lon Chaney, Jr. and Fay Helm. My wolf needed to act as if he was attacking Helm, in which classic film?

Answer: The Wolf Man

1941's "The Wolf Man" is set in Wales, where a legendary creature is said to roam. Larry Talbot, played by Lon Chaney, Jr., has returned to his ancestral home there and, amid a growing attraction to a shopkeeper's daughter, played by Evelyn Ankers, the danger to Talbot is growing apace.
Lon Chaney, Jr. played the same character in an additional four movies, including 1943's "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man", 1944's "House of Frankenstein", 1945's "House of Dracula" and 1948's "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein".
Released in December of 1941, "The Wolf Man" was one of Universal's most profitable movies in 1942. The film had a significant impact on future werewolf movies, creating several new myths about the creatures, including that they could only be killed by silver bullets.
2. A producer from Orion Pictures called and asked if I could bring several wolves to a film set in New York. He said they were making a thriller-horror film starring Gregory Hines, Albery Finney and Diane Venora, with a screenplay based on a book by Whitley Strieber. Which 1981 film was in need of my wolves?

Answer: Wolfen

In New York City, a business tycoon, his wife and bodyguard are murdered, and the pressure to solve those murders is intense. NYPD Captain Dewey Wilson is assigned to the case, and partnered with Rebecca Neff, a criminal psychologist. With the investigation underway, more deaths occur, and evidence for some sort of animal attacks mounts. But not any normal type of animal, it seems, is responsible.
Directed by Michael Wadleigh and produced by Rupert Hitzig, the film also starred Edward James Olmos, Tom Noonan and Dick O'Neill.
According to the director, police were stationed around the movie set, with orders to shoot to kill any of the wolves escaping from the enclosed area.
Tom Waits, who played small roles in several films during the '80s, played a drunken bar owner/piano player in the film, and his song "Jitterbug Boy" was on the film's soundtrack.
Whitley Strieber's novel, titled "The Wolfen" was published in 1978. Among Strieber's other works are "The Hunger" published in 1981, and "Communion", which was published in 1987. And, with Art Bell, he co-wrote 1999's "The Coming Global Superstorm", which sparked the creation of the 2004 film "The Day After Tomorrow".
3. When the producer of 1981's "The Howling" called, I was glad to select one of my wolves to star in his project. Especially since the film was featuring the actress who was already lined up to play the mother in 1982's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and 1983's "Cujo". Who was this busy actress?

Answer: Dee Wallace

Born in 1948, and a graduate of the University of Kansas, Dee Wallace has had well over 100 television and movie appearances. Following her debut on television in 1974 on "Lucas Tanner", she guest-starred on "Police Woman", "The Twilight Zone", "Nash Bridges" and many others. Following her first movie appearance, on 1975's "The Stepford Wives", she went on to appear in a number of movies, including 1986's "Critters", 1996's "The Frighteners" and 2007's "Halloween".
Besides being an actress, she is also an author, motivational speaker, radio host, and runs an acting school.
Based on a novel by Gary Brandner, "The Howling" centers around a newswoman traumatized by a serial killer. As part of her treatment, she and her husband are sent to 'The Colony', where the other residents may be more dangerous, and other-worldly, than the serial killer.
"The Howling" also starred Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, and Dee Wallace's then-husband, Christopher Stone. Stone also appeared with Wallace in few other movies, including 1983's "Cujo".
4. A British film company called, needing wolves for a film due to be released in 1984. The cast included Sarah Patterson, David Warner, Micha Bergese and Angela Lansbury, and was a reworking of an old fairy tale. Which British film needed my wolves?

Answer: The Company of Wolves

In "The Company of Wolves", Rosaleen is dreaming. Her dream is rich in characters, a fairy tale of parents, villagers, wolves who turn human when killed, and a superstitious grandmother who tells disturbing and intriguing tales. But, just how much of her dream is real, and how real may her dream become? "The Company of Wolves" resists an easy classification.

It is more than a horror film, and more than just a reworking of a classic fairy tale, with fantasy, dark thrills and folklore all adding elements of complexity to the basic werewolf film. With stories held within the frame of a larger story, themes of sexual awakening, betrayal, loss and need are woven throughout the multiple tales.

The film was based on a story written by Angela Carter, and the screenplay was written by Carter and director Neil Jordan.
5. I provided the wolves for a 1985 horror film starring Gary Busey and Corey Haim. Haim played a paraplegic with a wheelchair called the Silver Bullet, and Busey played his Uncle Red. The story was set in a small town in Maine where a number of murders had shaken the community, and it seemed a werewolf was to blame. The film was based on a novelette, written by which author?

Answer: Stephen King

In 1985's "Silver Bullet", a young paraplegic, Marty Coslaw, lives in Tarker's Mills, Maine, a town where a number of murders have roused the citizens into taking vigilante action. Their search for the killer results in several of their own deaths, but not that of the killer. When Marty's Uncle Red arrives, and builds him a motorized wheelchair, Marty is free to roam further afield, perhaps far enough to put him in the path of the killer. A killer Marty believes is not a man, but a werewolf.
Stephen King, who has also published under the name Richard Bachman, has had quite a few of his novels and short stories adapted for the big screen. Just a few include 1980's "The Shining", 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption" and 1999's "The Green Mile." "Silver Bullet" was based on the novella "Cycle of the Werewolf" which was published in 1983.
A large majority of King's works are set in Maine - his home state. He has won dozens of awards, including World Fantasy Awards, Bram Stoker Awards, Horror Guild Awards and British Fantasy Society Awards.
6. In 1994 I got a call from Mike Nichols, who was directing a horror film. He needed a wolf to bite the main character, who was being played by Jack Nicholson. The film also starred Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Plummer and James Spader. With a plot that included infidelity and murder, and explored the savagery beneath the human persona, which suspenseful film was this?

Answer: Wolf

In "Wolf", Will Randall is a publishing executive with few prospects, an unfaithful wife, and a life in upheaval. He's been bitten by a wolf, and he is changing, his senses sharpening, his appetites and ambition growing. But so, perhaps, is his savagery, and his taste for vengeance.
Directed by Mike Nichols, "Wolf" also starred Kate Nelligan, Om Puri, David Hyde Pierce and Richard Jenkins. While the movie earned generally poor reviews, it was a box office success. The film was nominated for one Grammy Award and six Saturn Awards - and won a Saturn Award for Best Writing.
7. I transported several wolves to New York City, where Roland Emmerich was directing a science fiction-disaster film starring Jake Gyllenhaal. On the set, as a cataclysmic shift in the weather occurred, Gyllenhaal and several friends ended up trapped in the New York Public Library. In which 2004 film did my wolves terrorize Gyllenhaal and several others when they dared to leave the safety of the library?

Answer: The Day After Tomorrow

In 2004's "The Day After Tomorrow", a paleoclimatologist named Jack Hall has discovered something worrying - ice at the polar cap is melting, playing havoc with ocean currents and temperatures. His predictions are dire, but his warnings about rapid and violent shifts in weather patterns are dismissed as impossible, implausible and farfetched. But, as tornadoes strike California, and superstorms wreak havoc across the globe, Jack's warnings begin to ring true. Now, with Jack's son on a school trip in New York City, and the flooded city in the path of one of those superstorms, Jack sets out to battle the elements in the hope of saving his son.
The film, which also starred Dennis Quaid, Emmy Rossum, Sela Ward and Ian Holm, came under heavy criticism from the scientific community. And, NASA declined to grant the request for a consultation before the filming began, on the grounds that the movie's premise was too far-fetched to be be remotely plausible.
The film had the tagline of "Whoever said "Tomorrow is another day"... didn't check the weather." And while the film did not reach number one, it was hugely successful at the box office.
8. After hearing that a 2010 remake of "The Wolfman" was in the works, I knew I should expect a call from a movie studio requesting one of my wolves. And, sure enough I got the call, but it was from one of the stars, not the studio. Anthony Hopkins called me! He said that his co-star, who would be playing the part of Lawrence Talbot, should only be bitten by the best of wolves! But who was this co-star?

Answer: Benecio del Toro

Benecio del Toro's acting career began on television, with small parts during the 1980s, including an appearance on "Miami Vice" and "Private Eye", both in 1987. His movie debut came about the next year in "Big Top Pee-wee", and he has appeared in more than 30 films. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 2000's "Traffic", and was nominated for another for 2003's "21 Grams". He has also won a number of other awards, including a Bafta and an Independent Spirit Award. Besides starring in "The Wolfman", he was also a producer
"The Wolfman" is set in Blackmoor, England, in 1891, where Lawrence Talbot has returned following his brother's death. His brother was mauled to death, and the nearby villagers blame a dancing bear belonging to a group of Gypsies camped nearby. But when Talbot visits the camp, and the villagers attempt to capture the bear, a creature attacks, killing several and biting Talbot during the savagery. Now Talbot's destiny is uncertain, with a curse that has its price in blood, and a darkness brightened only by the full moon.
Directed by Joe Johnston, the film also starred Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Art Malik. And, Geraldine Chaplin, the daughter of Charlie Chaplin, played Maleva, the leader of the Gypsy band.
9. I got a call from Adam Green, back in 2010. who needed a whole pack of wolves for a psychological thriller he was directing. His picture starred Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore and Kevin Zegers, and it was set at a ski resort in the Eastern USA. He said he would need the wolves for just a few days, for which film?

Answer: Frozen

2010's "Frozen" takes place at a ski resort in New England, at the end of the weekend. When three friends are stranded on a chairlift 50 feet above ground, with a storm setting in and the resort closed until the following weekend, the three are faced with a choice - wait in the relative safety of the chairlift, and probably freeze to death, or jump to the ground below, and risk being injured by the fall, and torn to shreds by the waiting wolves.
Written and directed by Adam Green, the psychological thriller was filmed in Utah, without any CGI (computer-generated imagery) effects.
10. Leonardo DiCaprio called me, wanting one of my wolves for a movie he was co-producing. It was a fantasy thriller, starring Amanda Seyfried, Julie Christie, Billy Burke and Gary Oldman, and the screenplay was based on a folk tale. Which 2011 fantasy-thriller film needed one of my wolves?
