Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the real life adventurer played by Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Revenant" (2015)?

Answer: Hugh Glass

Hugh Glass (1783-1833) was a real life trapper whose early life is obscure. His first major adventures were during 1823 expedition of General William Ashley. Those adventures formed the basis for "The Revenant" (2015). The story was also told in "Death Valley Days" (1966) and "Man in the Wilderness" (1971).

Glass was mauled by a bear near Shadehill Reservoir in Perkins County, South Dakota. Left for dead by his colleagues, a gravely injured Glass traveled 200 miles to Fort Kiowa on his own. The real Glass was killed by Arikara warriors in 1833.

There is a monument to Glass, part of the Hugh Glass Recreation Area. It is the northern part of the state, near the North Dakota border, about 100 miles west of Mobridge.

In "The Revenant" John Fitzgerald was Tom Hardy, Andrew Henry was played by Domnhall Gleeson and Will Poulter was Jim Bridger. DiCaprio won the Academy Award for Best Actor after three prior nominations.
2. "The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" (1974) is based on the adventures of a real life mountain man.

Answer: True

John (or James Capen) "Grizzly" Adams (1812-1860) was born in New England and spent his youth as an outdoorsman and zoologist. The California Gold Rush of 1849 led him west and he spent the last decade of his life in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where he tamed several grizzly bears. Adams was attacked by a bear in 1855 and ultimately died of complications from those injuries in 1860. Adams is buried in Charlton, Massachussetts.

No quiz about bears in cinema would be complete without mentioning Dan Haggerty. He starred as James Capen Adams in the 1974 film, and went on to play him in 37 episodes of the NBC series of the same name (1977-78). Twenty years later, Haggerty would return to the world of bears with "Grizzly Mountain" (1996) and "Escape to Grizzly Mountain" (2000).
3. In the Clint Walker western "Night of The Grizzly" (1966), what is the name of the bear that terrorizes the settlers?

Answer: Satan

Clint Walker plays a rancher named Jim Cole who moves with his family to Wyoming. Their efforts at happiness are threatened by a giant grizzly bear nicknamed Satan, which has been killing livestock and terrorizing area ranchers. Over the course of the film, Satan the bear kills Sam Potts (Don Haggerty) and Cass Dowdy. The bear's animal victims include a bull named Duncan, a mule, a pack of dogs and a group of pigs.

The human villains in the film are a rival rancher named Jed Curry (Kennan Wynn) and a bounty hunter named Cass Dowdy (Leo Gordon). Dowdy redeems himself in the end by saving Cole's son.
4. In what 1970s era film does Robert Redford have a pet bear?

Answer: Jeremiah Johnson

"Jeremiah Johnson" stars Redford as a mountain man who engages in a war with Crow warriors when his family is murdered. He learns about bears from Chris "Bear Claw" Lapp (Will Geer), an eccentric mountain man who has an unusual bond with bears, and has a bear as a companion.

In "Butch Cassidy" (1969), Redford stars with Paul Newman as legendary outlaws. In "The Sting" (1973), Redford and Newman play con artists in 1936 Chicago. And in "Three Days of the Condor" (1975) Redford plays a CIA agent involved in a global conspiracy.
5. In the 1976 animal thriller "Grizzly", what method is used to kill off the bear that is terrorizing a national park?

Answer: bazooka

Steven Spielberg probably should have sued the producers of "Grizzly", which basically rips off the plot of "Jaws". A large natural predator threatens a community, local officials try to downplay the threat, and a small group of heroes have to track down the killer animal.

In this case, the heroes are a park ranger named Michael Kelly (Christopher George) and a pilot/guide named Don Stober (Andrew Prine). Before they are able to kill the 15 foot tall monster Grizzly, the bear mangles two hikers, a female ranger, a female camper, a forest ranger and a mother and child. The last two victims are naturalist Arthur Scott (Richard Jaeckel) and Stober. The bear in question was played by a grizzly named Teddy.

Kelly manages to blow up the giant bear using a bazooka. The rifle shot in the scuba tank was how Chief Brody killed the shark in "Jaws" (1975).
6. John Candy and Dan Aykroyd face off against a bald headed bear in what 1980s comedy?

Answer: The Great Outdoors

"The Great Outdoors" (1986) features Candy as a Chicagoan vacationing in the fictional Wisconsin town of Pechoggin. His vacation is interrupted by his annoying brother-in-law (Aykroyd).

The bear in question was played by Bart, probably the most famous trained bear in films. His credits include "The Bear" (1988), "Clan of the Cave Bear" (1986), "White Fang" (1991), "12 Monkeys" (1995) and "Walking Thunder" (1997). In all, Bart appeared in 15 films, as well as many episodes of "Grizzly Adams" as a young Ben the Bear.

The film itself was shot in Bass Lake, California, near Yosemite. Candy and Aykroyd have a notable encounter with a bald bear towards the end of the film.

"Summer Rental" (1985) had Candy, but not Aykroyd. "The Blues Brothers" (1980) did have Candy and Aykroyd, but the only Bears would have been the Chicago football team. "Spies Like Us" (1985) stars Aykroyd and Chevy Chase as wanna-be agents.
7. In the 1994 film "Legends of the Fall", which member of the Ludlow family has violent encounters with bears (as well as a strange spiritual connection)?

Answer: Tristan

"Legends of the Fall" (1994) stars Anthony Hopkins as a retired colonel raising three sons in rural Montana at the start of the 20th Century.

Tristan was played by Brad Pitt in one of his first major acting roles. It earned Pitt his first Golden Globe nomination. Tristan was a hot headed young man who proved unable to protect the people he loved most. Tristan was mauled by a bear at age 12, but took the bears paw in exchange. At the end of the film, Tristan is killed by a bear. Bart the Bear played the bear in "Legends of the Fall".
8. Who played opposite Anthony Hopkins in the 1997 survival film "The Edge"?

Answer: Alec Baldwin

Anthony Hopkins once again appeared with Bart the Bear, this time as the Kodiak bear's would be lunch. Alec Baldwin plays Robert "Bob" Green, who is having an affair with Hopkins' wife, played by supermodel Elle Macpherson. Both Harrison Ford and Dustin Hoffman were considered for the role of Charles Green (Hopkins), but took a pass. Baldwin, Bacon, Robbins and Oldman were all born in 1958.

Most of "The Edge" is centered around a survival struggle with Hopkins and Baldwin pitted against the bear. The drama (aside from the killer bear) comes from Baldwin wanting to murder Hopkins to steal his wife, and Hopkins learning of his wife's infidelity. In the end, Baldwin dies after falling in a bear trap. Most of the film was shot in Canada, in Alberta and British Columbia, especially Banff and Yoho National Parks.
9. The 2005 documentary "Grizzly Man" is based on Timothy Treadwell's experiences with bears in what US state?

Answer: Alaska

Between 1990 and 2003, eccentric naturalist Timothy Treadwell would spend his summers in Katmai National Park in Alaska, filming his encounters with coastal black bears. German director Herzog used this footage for the basis of the documentary.

Park rangers repeatedly warned Treadwell that his encounters with the bears were reckless and threatened both his safety and that of the bears. Despite his reckless behavior, Treadwell became a minor celebrity, appearing on television talk shows and writing a book about his experiences with the bears.

Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were attacked and killed by a bear in October 2003. The attack was captured on film, and Herzog features the video but not the audio in the film.
10. One of the more recent "Bear Peril" films is "Backcountry" (2014). What actress stars as Jen, who is chased by a bear for much of the movie?

Answer: Missy Peregrym

"Backcountry" (2014) is based on the real life experiences of Mark Jordan and Jacqueline Perry, who were attacked by a man eating bear in Ontario in 2005. In real life, Perry died but her husband survived. In the film, Jen's boyfriend Alex (Jeff Roop) is the one who dies.

In the movie, Alex suffers a broken ankle and is eaten by the bear. Jen escapes by climbing down a waterfall and canoeing to safety, The film was shot in Powassan, Ontario, around 650 kilometers southeast of where the real life incident took place.

Missy Peregrym started out as a model, but moved into acting in 2002. She had a recurring role on the NBC adventure series "Heroes" in 2006 before getting her big break on the Canadian police drama "Rookie Blue" in 2007. She played officer Andrea "Andy" McNally for six seasons. In 2018, she joined the cast of the CBS police drama "FBI" as Special Agent Maggie Bell.

All of the choices are Canadians. Cobie Smulders was born in Vancouver and Elisha Cuthbert is from Calgary. Charlotte Sullivan is from Toronto and worked with Missy Pergrym on "Rookie Blue".

Other entries in the "bear attack" genre include the James Mardsen/Piper Perabo adventure "Into The Grizzly Maze" (2015); the incredibly awful "All Girls Weekend" (2016), which is not even laughably bad; and the Natalie Portman science fiction thriller "Annihilation" (2018) which had mutant killer bears.
