Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1997) "You're a godsend, a saviour." - Mrs. Marsh "No, I'm a postman."

Answer: The Postman

In post-Apocalyptic USA, all structure has been destroyed and anarchy reigns. After managing to escape from a band of would-be dictators, one man (played by Kevin Costner) finds an old postal truck that still has some of its mail intact. Donning the uniform of the deceased postal carrier, he sets out to deliver the mail.

The reaction he receives to this reappearance of civilization touches him deeply. It sets him on a mission to destroy the anarchists, and restore order to the world. This quote is spoken by the woman who receives a letter from her sister, delivered 15 years after it was written.
2. (1996) "Shut, up...just shut up. You had me at hello." - Dorothy

Answer: Jerry Maguire

Tom Cruise played the title character, a sports agent who develops a conscience, and loses his job over it. As the movie unfolds he struggles to hold onto the one client who didn't abandon him, so that he can prove that it's possible to be honest and successful at the same time.

This line is delivered by Dorothy (played by Renee Zellweger), the one co-worker who sticks with him, only to become his love interest.
3. (1995) "...they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom..." - William Wallace

Answer: Braveheart

My husband was absolutely affronted that this quote made the list. Mel Gibson's epic movie tells the story of the efforts of one man, a commoner, to rally the Scots together to fight off the oppression of the English. Loosely based on a true story, the film chronicles the troubled life and horrible death of this Scottish legend.

This line was delivered as part of a rallying speech to some soldiers who, overwhelmed by the strength of the English, were ready to turn around and head home.
4. (1996) "Today we celebrate our Independence Day!" - President Thomas Whitmore

Answer: Independence Day

Aliens have arrived, and they're anything but friendly. Equipped with far superior technology, they have already wiped out much of the major cities in the United States, and have left no doubt about their intentions to wipe out all life on Earth. Rallying together, on July 4th of course, for one last attempt to destroy the invading fleet, the president of the U.S.A. (played by Bill Pullman) delivers this line as part of a rousing speech to inspire the fighters on to glory.

This all star cast also included Mary McDonnell, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Will Smith and Randy Quaid, to name a few.
5. (1999) "After all, I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." - Anna Scott

Answer: Notting Hill

Can the most famous actress in the world and an average Joe bookstore owner find happiness, while living in a fishbowl? That's the question that this cute little romantic comedy explores. It's very near the end of the film when Julia Roberts gets to deliver this decidedly corny line to Hugh Grant, the man who is in love with her, but cannot believe that she could actually love him too.
6. (1986) "You can be my wingman any time." - Iceman

Answer: Top Gun

When you throw a bunch of macho-type pilots into an Naval flying school for the 'best of the best', you can be sure that the competition is going to be pretty intense. Young Maverick (played by Tom Cruise) is particularly competitive, as he tries to throw off the baggage that he carries because of rumours that his father choked in the air, causing several deaths, including his own. Iceman (played by Val Kilmer) delivered this line near the end of the movie, as a way of showing that he had finally developed respect for Maverick, whom he had labeled too dangerous throughout the movie.
7. (1990) "I love you." - Sam Wheat "Ditto." - Molly Jensen

Answer: Ghost

Sam (Patrick Swayze) loves Molly (Demi Moore), but he never says so. Whenever she tells him that she loves him, he replies by saying "Ditto". When Sam is murdered, his ghost hangs around long enough to learn that Molly is also in danger, and he finds a psychic medium (played brilliantly by Whoopi Goldberg) to somehow convince Molly of this. Once the bad guy has been disposed of, and the angels have come to take Sam to Heaven, Molly is finally able to see and hear him.

He tells her that he loves her, and she replies "Ditto".
8. (1994) "Is it still raining?" - Carrie

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

Charles and Carrie meet at a wedding in England, and hit it off famously. Unfortunately she has to head back to America, and the next time they see each other, she's engaged to someone else. After he suffers through her wedding, he decides that perhaps he should settle down himself.

However Carrie, recently split from her husband, shows up just before his wedding, making Charles realize what a colossal mistake he was about to make. This line is spoken very near the end of the movie, when she shows up again to talk to him, and they stand in the pouring rain and agree not to marry each other, for the rest of their lives.
9. (1987) "Nobody puts Baby in a corner." - Johnny Castle

Answer: Dirty Dancing

It's the '60s, and Baby finds herself spending a couple of weeks with her family at Kellerman's Resort. Not content with the activities arranged for the guests, Baby soon gets involved with the kids who work there for the summer, whose lives are very different from her own.

She falls in love with the charismatic dance instructor, and puts everything on the line to defend him when he is maliciously accused of theft. This line is delivered to her parents, during the big end of season show, when Johnny returns, after being fired, to dance the last dance with Baby.
10. (1997) "I'm the king of the world!" - Jack Dawson

Answer: Titanic

Fictional characters Jack and Rose fall in love on the ill-fated voyage of the great ship Titanic. Although "Titanic" is an amazing movie, chronicling the fate of the ship and many of her passengers, I found the love story between Jack and Rose to get a little tedious. Jack said this line fairly early in the movie, as he stood, arms outstretched, at the very tip of Titanic's bow. Cheesy as this line was in the film, I felt it was even cheesier when Cameron used it in his acceptance speech at the Oscars.

This list of cheesy quote has intrigued me, because I can think of one or two lines that I can't believe were not included. What about you - can you think of any movie lines that should have been included in this list? If you can, please send them to me and I might use them in a list of our own.
