Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2001) "Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" - Gwen Harrison "Actually, it really is a gun." - Eddie Thomas

Answer: America's Sweethearts

Gwen (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Eddie (John Cusack) had it made, their love for each other, both on and off the screen, made them favourites among movie-goers. Then Gwen had an affair, and Eddie had a breakdown.
Now, they have to get together again to promote the last movie that they made together - a movie that's being held hostage by the director. Steeling himself to face Gwen for the first time, Eddie fantasizes this exchange as how the reunion might transpire. In this little imagined scenario, he pulls out the gun and shoots Gwen.
Julia Roberts, Hank Azaria and Billy Crystal also star, under Joe Roth's direction.
2. (1978) "Tell me about it...stud." - Sandy

Answer: Grease

Sandy and Danny had a wonderful summer romance, but what's going to happen now that they're back at school? Despite pressure from friends, Danny tries his best to become more like the man Sandy thought he was. However it's Sandy's transformation, from clean-cut cheerleader to leather-bound tart, that's nothing short of astounding. This line is delivered near the end of the film, after Danny first sees how much she has changed for him, and just before he breaks into song to show his appreciation.
Olivia Newton-John, John Travolta and Stockard Channing star under Randal Kleiser's direction.
A big thank you to irishmanswife, for suggesting this cheesy line!
3. (2001) "...what I'm trying to say, very inarticulately, is that ...um ...in fact, perhaps despite appearances, I like you very much ...just as you are." - Mark Darcy

Answer: Bridget Jones's Diary

Bridget Jones drinks too much, smokes too much and is desperate to lose weight and find a meaningful relationship. She chronicles her ups, downs and massive rationalizations in her diary, including her frequent encounters with Mark Darcy, a man that she very much hates, at first.

After a relationship with her boss ends in humiliation, Bridget finds herself becoming more and more attracted to Darcy, a man who is her opposite in very many ways. This line, delivered by Mark to Bridget, marks (forgive the pun) the turning point in their relationship from mutual dislike to mutual liking. Of course they have to endure a few more catastrophes before they manage to get together. My thanks go to Nannanut for this cheesy line.
4. (1998) "The United States Government just asked us to save the world. Anyone wanna say no?" - Harry Stamper

Answer: Armageddon

An asteroid that's large enough to destroy everything is hurtling towards the Earth. The only hope of stopping it is to send up a deep core drilling time to implant a nuclear device to blow the asteroid off of its course. Harry Stamper, leader of the drilling team, delivers this moving line to the crew that will save mankind from extinction.
Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, and Billy Bob Thorton star under Michael Bay's direction.
5. (1987) "I think she gets it from me." - Marjorie Houseman

Answer: Dirty Dancing

While spending a few weeks with her family at Kellerman's Resort, Baby becomes involved with the kids who work there, kids whose lives are very different from her own. When Johnny, the dance instructor, faces dismissal for a theft that he didn't commit, Baby risks her reputation by providing him with an alibi. She becomes terribly disillusioned when he's fired anyway, because of his involvement with her. He returns on the night of the big end of season talent show, and together they wow the crowd with their dancing.
Baby's mother says this line to her husband, after watching her daughter's newfound skills.
My thanks for this cheesy suggestion goes to kitty_buzz.
6. (1987) "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." - Wesley

Answer: The Princess Bride

Westley and Buttercup truly love each other, so when Westley is killed by pirates when he left to seek his fortune, she is truly devastated. When Prince Humperdinck names her as his intended bride, she doesn't care. However the Prince has arranged to have her murdered, to provoke a war. It's a good thing that Westley returns in time to save her, and carry her off into the sunset (so to speak).
This line is delivered when Wesley asks Buttercup why she didn't wait for him, and she answers that he was dead. This is his cheesy, but oh so romantic reply.
7. (1993) "I was taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like... magic." - Sam Baldwin to Dr. Marcia Fieldstone

Answer: Sleepless in Seattle

Sam is having a hard time getting over the death of his wife. One night his son phones a radio psychologist to try and get help for his dad. On the other side of the country, Annie hears Sam on the radio, and becomes obsessed with meeting him, jeopardizing her own engagement. They meet atop the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day, a meeting orchestrated by Sam's son. You could tell when Sam takes Annie's hand that the magic is there for them too.
This quote is part of Sam's conversation with the radio psychologist, when he's telling her about how he fell in love with his wife.
Thanks again to Nannanut, for this second contribution to this quiz.
8. (2000) "They're called boobs Ed." - Erin

Answer: Erin Brockovich

A single mother of three, Erin bullies her way into a job in her lawyer's office. While there she uncovers a situation where the Pacific Gas & Electric Company had poisoned the ground water around its plant with hexavalent chromium, wreaking havoc on the health of the residents. They eventually win a multi-million dollar suit against the company, the biggest of its kind at the time.
This quote is from fairly early in the film, when Erin is talking to her boss about searching records to gain information for their case. Ed questions her on why she thinks she can "just walk in there and take whatever you want". This is her reply.
Julia Roberts and Albert Finney star under Steven Soderbergh's direction.
9. (1993) "The only thing that matters now are the people we love... Alan and Lex and Tim. John, they're out there where people are dying." - Dr. Ellie Sattler

Answer: Jurassic Park

Scientists have cloned dinosaurs, and created a fantastic theme park. Before the park opens for business, a team of scientists (and others)spends the weekend there, to give their endorsement of the park. When a disgruntled employee shuts down the power, during a tropical storm (so that he can steal some dinosaur embryos), the dinosaurs get loose and it becomes a struggle to stay alive.
Ellie Sattler delivers this line to John Hammond, the driving force behind the park, while they wait to hear the fate of some of their group who were out in the park when the power went out. Hammond is thinking of ways to make the park safer, and Ellie is trying to convince him that it's not worth the risk.
Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough star under Steven Spielberg's direction.
10. (1997) "You make me want to be a better man." - Melvin Udall

Answer: As Good as it Gets

Melvin Udall is an obsessive compulsive writer who is forced, through circumstances beyond his control, to become involved in the lives of his neighbour, and of his favourite waitress. After he gets over the initial shock to his system, he finds himself caring about other people for the first time, and actually falling in love with Carol (the waitress).

This line is said when he is trying to convince her to not to get up and walk out, after he has insulted her in his usual blunt and thoughtless manner. Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in this very funny movie, under James L. Brooks' direction.
