Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What Olympic athlete co-stars with The Village People in "Can't Stop the Music" (1980)?

Answer: Bruce Jenner

Jenner won the Olympic decathlon in 1976. He has acted in television and film in the decades since. Bruce regained fame in the 2000s for his marriage to Kris Jenner (formerly Kardashian) and his appearance on reality shows featuring the Kardashians.
Along with being named Worst Picture, "Can't Stop the Music" also won for worst screenplay. Jenner, Valerine Perrine, Marilyn Sokol and Nancy Walker were all nominated for their acting.
"Can't Stop the Music" is a fictional telling of the formation of the Village People. Jenner plays an up-tight attorney named Ron White. The film competes with the Olivia Newton-John vehicle, "Xanadu", for the title of "Worst film of the Disco Era".
Kurt Thomas was in the 1985 film "Gymkata", which does hold a place in the pantheon of cheesy films of the 1980s. In July 2002, "Maxim" magazine named it the 17th worst film of all time.
Spitz won seven gold medals in swimming at the 1972 Olympics, and then retired. Leonard won the light welterweight Gold at the 1976 Olympics before becoming one of the more successful boxers of the 1980s. Spitz and Leonard have had a few acting jobs here and there, but most of the time have appeared as themselves.
2. "Mommie Dearest" was named Worst Picture of 1981 by the Golden Raspberries. Complete this famous quote: "I told you! No ___________, ever!"

Answer: wire hangers

The "Wire Hangers" scene was one of the great camp moments of the 1980s, and has been parodied many times in the decades since "Mommie Dearest" came out. Joan Crawford has a hysterical melt-down when Christina puts her clothes on... wire hangers! Faye Dunaway is unintentionally hilarious (at least I don't think its intentional) in one of the most over-the-top performances, well...ever.
Along with being Worst Picture, Dunaway won worst actress, Steve Forrest won for worst Supporting Actor, and Diana Scarwid won for worst Supporting Actress. Mara Hobel earned two nominations, for her acting and for Worst Newcomer. "Mommie Dearest" also hold the distinction of being named "Worst Picture of the Decade" for the 1980s.
"Mommie Dearest" put Dunaway on the list of Academy Award winners (1976 for "Network") who also own a Razzie. She won another Razzie for her work in the 1993 thriller "The Temp" and was nominated for "Supergirl" (1984) and "Albino Alligator" (1996).
As for "Mommie Dearest", it was based on the scathing autobiography of Christina Crawford, daughter of film star Joan Crawford. Scarwid won the Razzie for her portrayal of the adult Christina, beating out Hobel as the child Christina.
3. The Bill Cosby spy comedy "Leonard Part 6" won the Raspberry in 1987. What turned out to be the fatal weakness of the evil henchmen that Leonard fought?

Answer: meat

Leonard Parker was fighting an evil vegetarian, and killed the henchman with magic hot dogs from a gypsy. (I did not make that up). Apparently, they were so obsessed with vegetarianism that mere exposure to meat turned out to be lethal. Gloria Foster, later famous as The Oracle from the "Matrix" trilogy, played the evil vegetarian.
Along with worst picture, Cosby earned Worst Actor and the film earned Worst Screenplay. The film saw the debuts of Obba Babatunde and Victoria Rowell (as Cosby's daughter).
At the time, Cosby had the most successful show on television, so his career was not that affected by "Leonard Part 6". Cosby actually made several television appearances, warning that the film was terrible and urging people not to watch it. He accepted the Razzies (made from 24-carat gold and Italian marble) on Joan Rivers' "The Late Show" a few weeks after the awards.
4. "Showgirls" set Razzie records in 1995, with 13 nominations and seven wins. It would go on to be named "Worst Picture of the 1990s". What was the name of the character played by Elizabeth Berkley?

Answer: Nomi Malone

Berkley played Nomi Malone, a would-be star seeking to make it as a showgirl in Las Vegas. The film has elements of "All About Eve" with gratuitous nudity, sex and violence thrown in.
Nomi starts out as a stripper, at a rather sleazy night club, who works her way up, through ruthless means, to become the star of a Vegas show. The film had the distinction of being the first NC-17 film to be widely distributed.
"Showgirls'" seven Razzies included Worst Picture, Worst Actress and New Star (Berkley), Worst Director (Paul Verhoeven), Worst Screenplay and Worst Original Song. Worst actor nominations included Gina Gershon (Cristal Connors), Kyle McLachlan (Zach Carey), Robert Davi (Al Torres), Alan Rachins (Tony Moss) and Lin Tucci (Henrietta Bazoom).
Verhoeven actually showed up at the Razzies and accepted the award in person.
The following year, another film based on strippers, the Demi Moore vehicle "Striptease", (1996) would win the Razzie as Worst Picture.
5. In 1997, Kevin Costner's Science Fiction epic "The Postman" won Razzies in every category for which it was nominated. Who played Ford Lincoln Mercury, the young man inspired by Costner's character?

Answer: Larenz Tate

Larenz Tate started out in television before moving into films, starring in urban dramas such as "Menace to Society" (1993). Since "The Postman" he has played the ill-fated Peter Waters in "Crash" (2004) and Quincy Jones in "Ray" (also 2004).
"The Postman" (not to be confused with the Italian film "Il Postino"), along with its Worst Picture, won Costner both the Worst Actor and Worst Director awards. Costner holds the distinction of having both a Best Director Academy Award ["Dances with Wolves" (1990)] and Worst Director Razzie. The film also won Worst Screenplay and Worst Original Song (for the film's entire score). The dueling Shakespeare between Costner and Will Patton is especially memorable.
Plot: "The Postman" is set in a post-apocalyptic United States in 2013. Kevin Costner plays a drifter who fights against a megalomaniacal general played by Will Patton. By the end of the film, Costner has restored order and civility to the world through the postal system.
Personal Note: About five minutes after leaving "The Postman", I began laughing uncontrollably and could not stop for five minutes. It was one of the best laughs I have ever had in my life. For the full effect, watch all three hours and pay for it.
6. "Hudson Hawk" (1991) starred which 1980's action hero?

Answer: Bruce Willis

While Bruce Willis was nominated for "Hudson Hawk," Kevin Costner beat him out for playing Robin Hood in "Prince of Thieves". "Hawk" did win Worst Picture, Director and Screenplay. Steven DeSouza, who wrote the screenplay for "Hudson Hawk" (1991) also wrote the screenplay for "Die Hard" (1988).
Willis plays a cat burglar named Eddie Hawkins, nicknamed the "Hudson Hawk". By the end, he is in a complex spy game involving evil corporations, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Vatican, centered around a machine by Leonardo da Vinci that manufactures gold.
"Hudson Hawk" was the final film produced by TriStar Pictures. Its financial failure was one of the factors leading to the takeover of the studio by Columbia.
Willis managed to survive "Hudson Hawk" and went on to become one of the more successful actors in Hollywood in the 1990s and 2000s. He reprised the role of John McClane from "Die Hard" in three sequels, and did critically acclaimed work in "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "The Sixth Sense" (1999) and "Sin City" (2005). Willis finally did win a Razzie Award for his performance as Harry Stamper in "Armageddon" (1998).
7. "Battlefield Earth" (2000) has the distinction of being named "Worst Drama of Our First 25 Years" by the Golden Raspberries. What future Academy Award winner played John Travolta's deputy, Ker, in the Sci-Fi drama?

Answer: Forest Whitaker

Whitaker plays Psychlo overlord Ker, alongside John Travolta as Terl and Kelly Preston as Terl's girlfriend. The film has earned some of the worst reviews ever, well worth reading on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Battlefield Earth" won Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Travolta), Worst Supporting Actor (Barry Pepper), Worst Supporting Actress (Preston), Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Couple (Travolta and anyone sharing the screen).
Whitaker clearly survived "Battlefield Earth," earning an Academy Award for his performance as Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland". Franchise Pictures, which produced the film, was not as fortunate. A lawsuit over fraud and alleged racketeering brought a judgment that bankrupted the company in 2004. Before it folded, Franchise produced "Ballistic: Ecks versus Sever" another candidate for worst film of the 2000s.
8. "Gigli" (2003) earned the title of "Worst Comedy of our First 25 Years" from the Golden Raspberries. In the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez film, what rap classic does Justin Bartha perform?

Answer: Baby Got Back

Bartha performs the Sir Mix-A-Lot song "Baby Got Back". The song, for those who haven't heard it, is a tribute to women with large bottoms. "Baby Got Back" was actually the number one song in America for FIVE straight weeks in the summer of 1992. Bartha's rendition of the song is one of the more disturbing versions ever recorded.
Bartha's character Brian, a mentally disabled young man obsessed with "Baywatch," is kidnapped by Larry Gigli (Affleck) and Ricki (Lopez) because he is the brother of a federal prosecutor who wants to send their boss to prison. Oscar winners Al Pacino and Christopher Walken appear in over-the-top performances.
"Gigli" has the distinction of being the first film to win the Golden Raspberry Grand Slam: Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Affleck), Worst Actress (Lopez), Worst director (Martin Brest) and Worst Screenplay (also Brest). Affleck and Lopez also won a joint award as worst couple.
The film was so bad that "Gigli" actually entered the lexicon in 2003 as a word indicating "terrible performance". Three weeks after opening at 2200 theaters, the film was showing at only 73 nationwide. Halle Berry was originally slated to star opposite Affleck in "Gigli" but had to drop out.
9. In the 2004 film "Catwoman", Halle Berry's character is rescued by a cat that turns out to be a messenger from the Egyptian goddess Bastet. What is the cat's name?

Answer: Midnight

Three Egyptian Mau cats played Midnight. We learn the cat's identity when Patience Phillips (Halle Berry) takes her to Ophelia Powers (Frances Conroy), the cat's owner. The scene happens shortly after Patience is murdered, then resurrected by magical cats. Halle Berry gains superpowers and fights evil, eventually killing her murderer.
"Catwoman" won Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Berry), Worst Director (Pitof) and Worst Screenplay awards. Sharon Stone was nominated for Worst Supporting Actress.
Berry, a good sport, showed up at the Razzie Awards in person. She had her Oscar in one hand and the Razzie in the other.
10. The Lindsay Lohan thriller "I Know Who Killed Me" set new records in 2007, winning a remarkable eight Razzies. The only non-winner was Julia Ormond as Supporting Actress. Who did she lose out to?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

Eddie Murphy won Worst Actor (Norbit), Worst Supporting Actress (Rasputia) and Worst Supporting Actor (Mr Wong) for "Norbit" - a film that probably would have been named Worst Picture if Lindsay Lohan hadn't been around.
"I Know Who Killed Me" is about twins separated at birth, Aubrey and Dakota. Both are abducted by a psychotic piano teacher, at different points in the film, and tortured. As to the rest of the plot, you will have to suffer to find out. The Razzie Awards compared it to a combination of "Hostel", "Saw" and "The Patty Duke Show".
The film won Worst Picture of 2007, Worst Remake or Rip-off, Worst Director (Chris Siverston), Worst Screenplay (Jeff Hammond) and a new award, Worst Excuse for a Horror Movie. Lohan won TWO worst actress awards, for her performances as Aubrey and as Dakota, as well as Worst Screen Couple (acting with herself). Ormond played Susan Fleming, who turned out not to be Aubrey's mother after all.
