Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which funny and heartwarming Christmas movie can be described using the words spaghetti, snowball and mailroom?

Answer: Elf

"Elf" is a 2003 movie directed by Jon Favreau and starring Will Ferrell in the lead role as a naive young man named Buddy who was raised in the North Pole with elves. When he is told that his real father lives in New York City he leaves the North Pole to search out his birth father.

His birth father is a workaholic named Walter, played by James Caan, who cannot accept at first that this naive and frivolous young man is his son. Of course Buddy helps Walter see the meaning of family. The three words in the clues? Well Buddy eats spaghetti at Walter's home with some maple sugar and other sugary treats thrown on top, he engages in a snowball fight with Walter's son and he goes to work in the mailroom at Walter's company.
2. Politics, infidelity and porn are three words you might not associate with Christmas but they do figure prominently in which Christmas movie?

Answer: Love Actually

"Love Actually" is a 2003 film starring the likes of Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Martin Freeman and Colin Firth, among many others. It tells the story of a number of different people and their relationships. Hugh Grant plays the Prime Minister who finds love, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman play a couple whose relationship is damaged by infidelity and Martin Freeman plays a stand in for a porn actor.

There are other couples trying to make love work against all kinds of challenges and obstacles.

It's a very heartwarming movie.
3. When you hear the words bridge, bank and ear do you think of this beloved black and white Christmas classic?

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

"It's A Wonderful Life" follows George Bailey from a young boy to a family man. As a young boy, he damages his ear while saving his brother in an accident and has trouble hearing out of that one ear for life. As a young man he feels stuck working at a family building and loan during hard times when all he wants to do is get out of this little town he lives in, Bedford Falls, and see the world. On one Christmas Eve, after one of his employees loses a large bank deposit, he heads to a bridge to plunge to his death, figuring he's worth more dead than alive.

He meets an angel who saves him and helps him to see that he's actually had a wonderful life. I always need Kleenex when I'm watching this movie!
4. Skyscraper, glass and cop are not words typically used around the holidays but they do play a role in which movie that takes place on Christmas Eve?

Answer: Die Hard

There is lots of debate as to whether the Bruce Willis action movie "Die Hard" is actually a Christmas movie but this movie does take place on Christmas Eve. John McClane, a New York City detective is in Los Angeles to see his estranged wife and while at the building where she works, gets caught up in a terrorist plot led by bad guy Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman. To save the day, McClane goes through all kinds of obstacles, including having to walk barefoot over broken glass.
5. The words towel, toaster and VHS are pretty nondescript but are used in which remake of a Christmas movie classic?

Answer: Scrooged

In this hilarious modern re-make of "A Christmas Carol", Bill Murray plays Frank Cross, a completely selfish executive who is visited by three ghosts to help him re-evaluate his life and to connect him to the love of his life that he let go years ago as he was working on his career. One of the ghosts uses a toaster to smack him with to get his attention and in another scene, he is seen choosing between towel or VHS home video recorder to give as gifts to people.

He chooses towel for most people on his list, including his brother.

As per the original story, he is taken to the past, sees a glimpse of the present for other people, and his possible future before he changes his ways.
6. This Ryan Reynolds Christmas time movie is quite funny. In which film can you find hockey, a singer and braces?

Answer: Just Friends

In this 2005 Ryan Reynolds movie, he plays Chris Brander, a man who has left his small town behind as well as the teen he used to be - overweight, fitted with braces on his teeth, insecure and pining for a girl who doesn't see him as anything but a friend.

He moved to Los Angeles, lost weight and became a successful music manager who treated girls terribly. One Christmas, he is forced to make a stop back in his hometown with a self-absorbed pop star, hilariously played by Anna Faris and he runs back into the girl from his teenage years.

As the movie progresses, he regresses back to the insecure person he was through a series of unfortunate events, for example, he plays hockey with a bunch of kids and gets hit in the face with a puck, forcing him to wear a retainer for protection.

He vies for the attention of his old friend with another unpopular guy from high school who is also more attractive now and all the shenanigans are pretty funny.
7. Oh no! In this Christmas movie that spawned sequels do burglars, Paris and aftershave play a role?

Answer: Home Alone

Young Kevin McAllister is inadvertently left behind as his family chaotically tries to get all their luggage and family members together for a Christmas vacation to Paris. In the hustle and bustle, Kevin is left at home alone and it isn't until his mom, played by Catherine O'Hara, is sitting on an airplane on the way to Paris that she realizes it isn't the coffee she left on or the garage door that was left open but that it was her son she left behind.

While at home alone, Kevin is at first overjoyed at having the house to himself and in one famous scene he applies aftershave to his face after a shower and screams.

He ends up dealing with a couple of bungling burgers who are targeting empty houses over the holidays and is able to outsmart them before his family arrives home to him.
8. Some pretty normal household objects are important to the laughs in this Christmas movie. Where will you see a lamp, furnace and soap adding to the laughs for the audience and misery for the characters?

Answer: A Christmas Story

This is the story of Ralphie, a young boy trying to convince his parents and Santa that he should get a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas, which everyone tells him is too dangerous because he could "shoot his eye out." His parents are pretty distracted around Christmas time because they have a furnace that doesn't work and a lamp that his dad adores but his mom hates that she 'accidentally' breaks.

His dad is known for some colorful language that Ralphie picks up and is forced to hold a bar of soap in his mouth for punishment. Poor Ralphie, between what's going on at home and troubles with a bully at school, has one thing to look forward to, and that's the hope of getting the BB gun.

He does get it and wouldn't you know it, he gets hit in the cheek when he uses it and ends up blaming it on an icicle.
9. Murder, orphanage and garbage are all associated with this 1980s era slasher pic that takes place during Christmas time. Can you name it?

Answer: Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2

"Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2" recycles much of the plotline of the first of these slasher movies. The killer, Ricky Caldwell, is sitting in a room being interrogated on Christmas Eve. He talks about the murder of his parents, his stay in an orphanage and how his older brother started killing people.

After he's finished his story, he kills his interrogator and escapes, going on a killing spree himself. This movie is terrible, the acting is awful and it is a typical 1980's exploitative slasher film but it has some pretty funny moments, including one scene where Ricky kills someone who is simply putting out his garbage while Ricky exclaims "It's garbage day!."
10. If you feel like you don't belong, join the dentist, misfits and prospector in which Christmas television special?

Answer: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

This heartwarming stop motion television special tells the story of Rudolph and his endeavors to try to fit in with the rest of the reindeer but then runs away when he is made fun of. He teams up with an elf who wants to be a dentist named Hermey and they run away together.

They meet Yukon Cornelius, a prospector and have all kinds of dangerous adventures including running into the Abominable Snowman and going to the island of Misfit Toys. This television special has been running since 1964 and is a family favorite.
