That discovery was a comet, which is heading on a direct path toward Earth.

The President says that Earth gets hit all the time with rocks and meteors, some no bigger than your hand and some the size of cars, but the comet that was spotted is as wide as the north side of Central Park to the Battery, and weighs 500 billion tons.

He says to put it another way, the comet is larger than Mt. Everest.

The Messiah comes within range of the comet five months after the mission starts. During the five months it took to get near the comet, Dr. Oren Monash was flying the Messiah.
