President Beck begins the news conference by telling everyone that the United States Ambassadors to every country in the world just finished telling them what he is about to say. He then goes on to say that about a year ago, on a hilltop in Arizona, two astronomers, Dr. Marcus Wolf and Leo Beiderman, made a discovery. That discovery was a comet, which is heading on a direct path toward Earth.

The President says that Earth gets hit all the time with rocks and meteors, some no bigger than your hand and some the size of cars, but the comet that was spotted is as wide as the north side of Central Park to the Battery, and weighs 500 billion tons.

He says to put it another way, the comet is larger than Mt. Everest.

Answer: The Messiah

President Beck says that the Messiah is almost completed, and in two months six American astronauts and one Russian astronaut will fly up on the spaceship Atlantis to board the Messiah.

At the news conference, President Beck introduces the astronauts who will save Earth. They are: Captain Spurgeon Tanner, Dr. Oren Monash, Dr. Gus Partenza, Andrea Baker, Mark Simon, Eric Vennekor, Colonel Mikhail Tulchinsky. It is noted that Captain Spurgeon Tanner was the last man to land on the moon. Captain Tanner says that Dr. Oren Monash will be the one flying the Messiah until they get to the comet, then he will take over and land on the comet's surface.

President Beck stated "There will be no hoarding, no sudden profiteering. I'm freezing all prices and wages. What a bottle of water cost you yesterday, it will cost you tomorrow," after a news reporter asked him about hoarding.

The comet was given the name of Wolf-Beiderman, because they were the ones who discovered it. It was also announced that Dr. Wolf was killed in a crash, along with Leo Beiderman. When this is mentioned, the Beiderman family is home watching the news conference, and Leo is astonished to hear his name. His father asks him if that was him that was mentioned.

The day after the news conference, Leo and his astronomy teacher are on stage in the school auditorium. As the camera zooms begins to zoom in, we see a student holding a "Newsweek" magazine with Leo on the cover. The cover reads "Beiderman Alive!".

When Fish and the other astronauts were at the barbecue, Fish has a conversation with his sons, Steve and Dwight. He says that they were 4 and 6 years old the first time he went to the moon.

Oren, Eric, Mikhail, Andrea, Gus, Mark, and Fish are at a bar the night before take off. However, Fish is at the bar while the other six are at a table. He overhears them talking about him and saying that if Frank Gifford were still in football he'd get killed. They said that the only reason Fish was invited on the mission, was because the powers that be wanted a familiar face.

The eight nuclear devices, or moles, will be used to destroy the comet. After landing on the comet's surface, the astronauts will drill the devices into the surface, and the moles will burrow down to 100 feet. This is supposed to be accomplished before the sun rises on the comet's surface. If the astronauts are still on the surface when the sun rises, there will be explosive outgases as the surface will heat well above 350 degrees.

Answer: 5 months

The Messiah comes within range of the comet five months after the mission starts. During the five months it took to get near the comet, Dr. Oren Monash was flying the Messiah. As they get within range of the comet, Fish, the rendezvous captain takes control and lands them safely on the surface of the comet. Now, the danger begins.
