The parents are Michael and Penelope Longstreet (played by John C. Reilly and Jodie Foster) and Alan and Nancy Cowan (played by Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet). Out of the four characters, Penelope is the most outraged about what has happened between the couples' sons. Alan Cowan is the least interested; we can deduce this from his intentionally flippant and obnoxious behavior (such as the incessant phone conversations with Walter). Michael is there because Penelope has asked him, but he'd rather be somewhere else - for instance, selling his pots and pans and bathroom fixtures at his store. Nancy tries to smooth things over until she reaches her breaking point: she throws up and gets drunk afterwards.

Penelope gets irritated when she finds the leftover cobbler in the fridge; she insinuates that their maid keeps leaving it there. Alan devours it because, as he says, he has to "get some food in him" at some point in his busy day.

Ethan and Zachary's altercation at the park is shown at the beginning of the film, while introductory credits roll. Zachary hits Ethan with a stick because, according to Penelope, Ethan wouldn't let Zachary be a part of his gang. As a result of the fighting, Ethan loses at least one of his permanent teeth, a fact that his mother reminds the Cowans in anger.

Alan needs the bathroom to clean up his pants, which his wife Nancy has unwittingly splattered with vomit. This happens after the cobbler, but before Michael has served everyone a glass of scotch.
