Multi-National United (MNU) is the organisation responsible for evicting the aliens from their shantytown during the first part of the film.

Weyland-Yutani, Skynet and ENCOM are fictional organisations from the 'Alien', 'Terminator' and 'Tron' universes, respectively.

South African born Neill Blompkamp chose to set his first major feature in his country of origin - the film is an adaptation of his 2006 short film, 'Alive in Joburg'. He would go on to direct 'Chappie' (2015), which is also set in the city of Johannesburg.

During the faux documentary segments, the aliens' attraction to cat food is described as a more intense version of cats' love for catnip. So extreme is their craving that they are exploited by cat food suppliers like drug dealers would junkies.

Answer: Clicking sounds

The 'prawns' only communicate by making clicking sounds with their mouths, so all of their dialogue in the film is subtitled. We have to assume that, during their 28 years on Earth, humans have gained some understanding of their language, as Wikus and others are able to converse with them.

Christopher the alien and his son are attempting to power a small craft to get up to the mothership and escape Earth when Wikus and the MNU come knocking - later in the film he and Wikus form an uneasy partnership.

Cope also doubled up as Grey Bradnam, an MNU correspondent during the documentary sections and voiced all of the other aliens in the movie. He played Captain Chamberlain in Season 3 of the TV show 'Black Sails' and also appeared in the 2012 movie 'Dredd'.

This was Copley's first lead acting role in a feature film.

David James played the villainous mercenary Koobus in the film. Matt Damon and Dev Patel were not in 'District 9' but they starred in Blomkamp's movies 'Elysium' and 'Chappie', respectively. Sharlto Copley would play major roles in both of these films and also starred in films such as 'The A Team' and 'Hardcore Henry'.

Obesanjo is a Nigerian gang leader who follows the belief that consuming alien body parts will grant him their power and has stockpiled a mass of weapons from prawns that he is unable to use. He is impressed with Wikus' ability to wield the weaponry and hopes to consume his mutated arm to gain the same power.

Answer: Christopher's son

Christopher's son (or Little One as his father calls him) uses a terminal in the shuttle to take remote control of the exosuit in Obesanjo's possession. Using the suit, he easily bests the gang and displays some of the suit's amazing abilities, such as catching bullets and firing exploding projectiles.

Answer: A concentration camp

District 10 was built with the intent to move the aliens outside of Johannesburg. Despite Christopher reassuring his son that life will be better there, Wikus admits to them that the place is more like a concentration camp and that the tents are smaller than their current shacks. At the end of the film we are told that District 10 now houses 2.5 million aliens.

Answer: A flower

Upon receiving the metal flower, Tania is given a glimmer of hope that Wikus may still be alive. The last shot of the movie is of an alien Wikus, now fully transformed, constructing his latest junk flower to place at the door of his wife.
