Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the family business for the Rivera family which was started by Miguel's great-great grandmother Mamá Imelda?

Answer: Shoes

Imelda started the business after her musician husband left and never came back. She turned away from music and forbade the family to speak of her former husband. All of Miguel's family worked in the business and Miguel shined shoes to help the family. After Miguel's grandmother talked to him about the importance of spending time with family on the Day of the Dead, she had the idea that it was time for Miguel to start working in the workshop, but Miguel wasn't excited about the idea.

The family's knowledge and affinity for the business was also apparent in the Land of the Dead. When the family members were looking for Miguel, Pepita used her powers to uncover Miguel's footprints. The members of the family recognized it as a Rivera shoe print, and were able to give the size and style as well.
2. What was the name of the stray dog that Miguel befriended in the movie?

Answer: Dante

Dante was a 'xoloitzcuintli' or Mexican hairless dog. He seemed to lack intelligence and was often seen with his tongue hanging out or chewing on his own paws. Dante followed Miguel and accompanied him to the Land of the Dead. When Frida Kahlo saw him, she said, "Oh, the mighty Xolo dog... guider of wandering spirits" and mistook him for an 'alebrije'.

When she saw his chewing on his leg, she said, "Or maybe he's just a dog."
3. Who was the name of the famous musician and actor from Santa Cecilia whom Miguel admired?

Answer: Ernesto de la Cruz

Ernesto de la Cruz was world famous and there were many tributes to him in the town of Santa Cecilia. His songs and movies were also popular in the Land of the Dead. He hosted a Sunrise Spectacular every Day of the Dead, which was a huge party and concert in which he performed. He received many gifts and offerings from his fans in the Land of the Living. During the movie, he was always shown wearing a white and silver charro outfit typical of Mariachi performers. He also put on a matching sombrero when he was going to perform.

Benjamin Bratt provided the voice for Ernesto de la Cruz and also his singing voice for "Remember Me". All of De la Cruz's other songs in the movie were sung by Antonio Sol.
4. According to Miguel's grandmother, why did the family put pictures on the family 'ofrenda'?

Answer: So the spirits of their dead loved ones could cross over and visit them

When she took him to the family's 'ofrenda' after he mentioned the talent show in the plaza, she talked to him about the importance of the night. She said it was all about family, and they put up the photos of their loved ones so that the spirits could pass over and visit them. Without their photo being on an 'ofrenda', the spirits of the dead would be unable to cross over into the Land of the Living.

She also mentioned to him about all the food and things they had prepared for the visit and the work they had put in to bring the family together.
5. What did Miguel take from the graveyard which made him connect with the spirit world?

Answer: Guitar

Miguel needed a guitar to enter the talent contest in the plaza. He went to Ernesto de la Cruz's statue to ask for guidance since he thought De la Cruz was his great-great grandfather. While there, he looked at the incomplete picture of his great-great grandparents and his great grandmother Coco, which gave him the idea to borrow the guitar from De la Cruz's tomb.

When he took the guitar, the cempasuchil flowers began to glow and reacted when Miguel played a chord on the guitar. When people arrived to see what had happened at the tomb, the man who entered passed through Miguel's body and couldn't see him.

The only ones who could see Miguel were Dante and the spirits of the dead who had returned to visit their families.
6. What were the 'alebrijes'?

Answer: Spirit creatures

The 'alebrijes' were spirit guides who took the forms of animals and inhabited the Land of the Dead. They were multicolored and had mysterious powers. Mamá Imelda's 'alebrije' was named Pepita and was a large 'alebrije' that looked like a panther with horns and wings. She helped Mamá Imelda track Miguel after he ran away from the family in the Land of the Dead, and she helped protect them from Ernesto de la Cruz. Ernesto de la Cruz's 'alebrijes' were chihuahuas and Frida Kahlo's 'alebrije' was a monkey. In the Land of the Living, people could buy small painted figurines of 'alebrijes'.

Dante turned out to be an 'alebrije' after all, which was revealed near the end of Miguel's time in the Land of the Dead. In his 'alebrije' form he was multicolored with small wings. He was Miguel's protector and tried to save him and guide him various times throughout the movie. On the next Day of the Dead after Miguel returned to the Land of the Living, Dante also visited him along with Pepita, though they took the forms of a regular dog and cat in the Land of the Living.
7. What happened when Héctor tried to cross the bridge into the Land of the Living near the beginning of the movie?

Answer: He sank into the flowers.

In order for the dead to visit the Land of the Living, their photo had to be on an 'ofrenda'. When he first tried to pass through to the Land of the Living, he had disguised himself as Frida Kahlo. The attendant at the bridge crossing x-rayed him and told him his photo wasn't on an 'ofrenda'.

He ran through and tried to cross over anyway, only to sink into the cempasuchil flowers on the flower bridge that crossed into the Land of the Living. Two Land of the Dead officers came and picked him up and carried him away.
8. Why didn't Miguel want to accept Mamá Imelda's blessing to get him back home to the Land of the Living?

Answer: She included the condition that he was to never play music again.

Miguel actually originally accepted her blessing, but he immediately broke his promise and was returned to the Land of the Dead. When Imelda tried to give him the blessing again, he refused to accept it and ran away. Toward the end of the movie, she offered him the blessing again, but with the condition that he never forget how much his family loved him.

This was after he had made her remember what it felt like to sing and he had reunited her with her estranged husband. Ernesto de la Cruz intervened before he could accept this blessing, however.

The blessing that finally sent him home was given to him by both his great-great grandparents with no conditions.
9. Who did Miguel team up with to try and find his great-great grandfather in the Land of the Dead so he could get his blessing?

Answer: Héctor

Héctor agreed to help Miguel get to Ernesto de la Cruz in exchange for Miguel putting Héctor's photo on an 'ofrenda'. Héctor told Miguel he could get him to De la Cruz because he knew him and knew where he would be practicing for the Sunrise Spectacular.

Héctor was a bit of a goof and trickster. He was first seen trying to cross over into the Land of the Living by disguising himself as Frida Kahlo, but his attempts failed. He had actually been a musician while living. Most people that knew him in the Land of the Dead teased him for having died by choking on a sausage, though he was actually murdered by De la Cruz. After this being revealed, Miguel found out that it was actually Héctor who was his great-great-grandfather and not Ernesto de la Cruz. After returning to the Land of the Living, Miguel was able to reveal the truth of what happened, and Héctor was recognized for his songwriting and musical talents.
10. What song did Miguel sing at the competition to determine who would get to perform at the Sunrise Spectacular?

Answer: Un Poco Loco

Miguel originally wanted to play "Remember Me" because it was his favorite Ernesto de la Cruz song and the most popular. Héctor talked him out of it because he said it was too popular and a lot of people were performing it. Miguel's performance of "Un Poco Loco" was his first ever performance since his family did not support his dream of being a musician. When Miguel first got on stage, he was nervous, but after giving his 'grito' he got over his nerves and began singing and playing the guitar. As he played, Dante pulled Héctor onto stage with Miguel, and Héctor started dancing and singing with Miguel. Miguel didn't win the competition, but he was later recognized by the winning band as 'Poco Loco' and they smuggled him into the Sunrise Spectacular.

The song was written by Germaine Franco and Adrian Molina and was sung by Gael García Bernal (Héctor) and Anthony Gonzalez (Miguel) in the movie.
