Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1969 film 'Ring of Bright Water' featured an unusual pet animal. Which of these, normally wild, creatures was it?

Answer: Otter

The film was based on a book by Gavin Maxwell and starred Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. The plot featured a Londoner buying the otter from a pet shop and moving to Scotland to live on the coast with the animal. The otter, Mij, eventually died at the hands of a ditch digger but not before having fathered pups who come to visit their parent's home.
2. 'Rob Roy' was released in 1995 with which actor in the title role?

Answer: Liam Neeson

The film told the story of Robert Roy MacGregor, a Scottish outlaw, but was overshadowed by 'Braveheart' which was released a short time later. The film also starred Tim Roth as the villain of the piece. Rob Roy was also the subject of a novel, published in 1817, by Sir Walter Scott.
3. Scottish movie, 'Gregory's Girl', from 1981, was centred around which sport?

Answer: Football (soccer)

Gregory, played by John Gordon Sinclair, was a member of the school football team. He fell for Dorothy (Dee Hepburn) who joined the team as a player despite the coach's reservations. After a series of misadventures, he ended up with her friend Susan. Susan was played by Clare Grogan, who also sang with the group Altered Images.

The film showed how an awkward, nerdy, teenager could end up with the girl, much to the disgust of his friends.
4. Alec Guinness and John Mills starred in which of these Scottish based films, released in 1960?

Answer: Tunes of Glory

The film was based on a novel by James Kennaway, who also wrote the screenplay for which he was nominated for an Oscar. It was set just after the end of World War Two, and covered John Mills' character replacing Alec Guinness's character as Commanding Officer of a Scottish regiment.

The new CO's authority was constantly undermined by his predecessor. Having suffered imprisonment by the Japanese, the new CO was psychologically damaged and was eventually driven to commit suicide.
5. 'Trainspotting', released in 1996, starred which one of these actors, all of whom have Scottish sounding names?

Answer: Ewan McGregor

Only McAvoy and McGregor are true Scots. McKellen and McDowall are both English, and McDowall's birth name was Malcolm Taylor. 'Trainspotting' was based on the novel by Irvine Welsh and told the story of an Edinburgh based group of heroin addicts. McAvoy starred in 'Atonement', McDowall in 'A Clockwork Orange' and McKellen played Gandalf in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
6. A 1961 film told the true story of a Skye terrier, who maintained a vigil over his master's grave. His name was Greyfriars, followed by which of the following?

Answer: Bobby

Greyfriars Bobby guarded the grave from 1858 until 1872, when he died himself. His story was told in a book by Eleanor Atkinson, and the Greyfriars part of the name came from the churchyard in Edinburgh where his master was buried. More information can be found at www.greyfriarsbobby.co.uk if you are interested.
7. Kerry Fox, Ewan McGregor and Christopher Eccleston starred as flatmates in which 1994 thriller?

Answer: Shallow Grave

The film was set in Edinburgh, where the three flatmates took on a new lodger for their spare room. They found his dead body in his room after a few days, with a suitcase full of money. They disposed of the body in the shallow grave of the title and kept the money - which was when the trouble started. The other options were also British films from the same year.
8. 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' starred which of these actresses, who later became a Dame?

Answer: Maggie Smith

All of these actresses have been made Dames, the female equivalent of a knighthood, but it was Maggie Smith who played the part of Jean Brodie. This was another film set in Edinburgh, in the 1930s, and the title character was an eccentric school teacher who followed her own curriculum.
9. The 1983 film 'Local Hero' was directed by which of these people?

Answer: Bill Forsyth

Of these choices, both Bill Forsyth and Danny Boyle have directed films covered in this quiz. Bill Forsyth also directed 'Gregory's Girl' and Danny Boyle directed 'Trainspotting' and 'Shallow Grave'. He more recently directed the huge hit from 2008, 'Slumdog Millionaire', which definitely wasn't set in Scotland. 'Local Hero' is well worth watching, not least for the soundtrack, written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
10. Set in Scotland, the 1948 film 'Whisky Galore', which was released in the USA under the title 'Tight Little Island', was produced by which British studio, famed for its comedies?

Answer: Ealing

The heyday of the Ealing Comedies was from 1947 to 1957, and also included 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' and 'The Lavender Hill Mob'. 'Whisky Galore' was based on a novel by Compton Mackenzie who also wrote the film script. The film was a version of a real life incident of a shipwreck on a Scottish island and the purloining of its cargo of whisky.
