Answer: Operation Pacific

"Operation Pacific" was released in 1951 and is the only film submarine movie that John Wayne made. As with many movies of his, Ward Bond was his co-star and played the submarines commander. Patricia Neal starred as Wayne's ex-wife, with whom he reconciles by the end of the movie.
4. Which movie is a strong drama of a U.S. Navy frogman (James Garner) whose mission is to infiltrate a Japanese island and photograph their codebook?

Answer: Up Periscope

This 1959 film was based on a novel by Robb White. The movie also features Edmund O'Brien as the submarine commander, Andra Martin as Garner's love interest, and "Gilligan's Island" skipper Alan Hale, Jr. as Lt. Malone.
5. Our next movie from 1958 featured a number of prominent stars, including Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Which movie is it that is also one of the rare films that had Gable's character dying?

Answer: Run Silent, Run Deep

The film follows Clark Gable's Commander P.J. Richardson pursuit of the elusive Japanese destroyer captain known as "Bungo Pete". His fanatical plans alarm Burt Lancaster because of the unnecessary endangerment of the crew and submarine. Lancaster takes over command after Richardson is incapacitated during depth charging. Richardson collapses and dies on the bridge at the end of the movie.
6. Not all submarine films are dramas; this one is a fairly fun comedy from 1996 with Kelsey Grammer, Harry Dean Stanton, Lauren Holly, Bruce Dern, Rip Torn and Rob Schneider. Which movie is it that has Dern playing his typical bad guy role?

Answer: Down Periscope

Kelsey Grammer is put in charge of an old World War II submarine that is filled with a misfit crew. His career is on the rocks and to get a commission on a nuclear submarine, he must outwit a rear Admiral played by Bruce Dern in a war games situation and sink a target ship. Against all odds, he and his crew are successful and receive a newly commissioned nuclear submarine.
7. Which 1995 submarine film features a battle between the captain of a U.S. nuclear sub (Gene Hackman) and a new executive officer (Denzel Washington) over conflicting interpretations of the authenticity of the launch codes message?

Answer: Crimson Tide

A message to launch can't be verified because of a damaged radio. Hackman insists on launching while Washington wants confirmation. Washington takes over command, then Hackman takes it back. Just before the launch time arrives a message is received to abort the mission.
8. Which movie stars Kirk Douglas, James Mason and Peter Lorre? Oh, and its based on a book by Jules Verne!

Answer: 20,000 Leagues under the Sea

"20,000 Leagues under the Sea" is a very memorable 1954 movie translation of Jules Verne's book. James Mason has a strong performance as Captain Nemo and Kirk Douglas as Ned. Always one of my favorite films.
9. Which German submarine movie from 1981 is considered one of the best and most realistic of all?

Answer: Das Boot

"Das Boot" is extremely authentic and follows the war travails of the U-96 during 1941 including when the sub was badly damaged and fell to the bottom of the sea where it was slowly being crushed. After a full day of frantic repairs, the crew was able to get the crippled sub back to the surface.

The captain of the real U-96 and a first officer of the U-219 were consultants on the film. This is definitely one of the most intense portrayals of undersea warfare.
10. Let's finish this quiz up with a very very simple one. Which animated movie is from "The Beatles"?

Answer: Yellow Submarine

The Beatles put out this classic animated film in 1968. It follows the Fab Four's adventures in Pepperland, which is protected by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
