Joe goes to Diane's show (for her paintings), and sees a portrait of himself that Diane painted from memory. He takes it off the easel and goes over to where Diane and her boyfriend are having an argument. Diane's boyfriend says that her show is a disaster and that she only sold two paintings. Joe says that Diane just sold three, and held up the painting he removed from the easel. Diane's boyfriend tells Joe that he can't just rip it down and that if it's damaged, Joe will have to pay for it; he then asked Joe who invited him. Joe tells him that Diane did, and her boyfriend says that was a mistake, and Diane tells her boyfriend that she made two mistakes, one being the show and the other him.

Joe takes Diane by the hand and they leave the art gallery, with Joe walking out holding the painting. He asks Diane to help him put it in the car because he didn't want it to get damaged. Joe then asks Diane if she needs a ride home, and Diane says yes. However, instead of taking Diane home, Joe takes her to Bobby's Rink, which is open 7 days a week from 3 PM to 3 AM.

When Joe and Diane pull up in front of Bobby's Rink, Joe gets out of the car and goes to the passenger side and gets Diane by the arm. There, the following conversation takes place:

Joe: "Come on. I wanna show you something."

Diane: "What are you doing? I thought you were taking me home?"

Joe: "Don't you wanna go roller skating?"

Diane: "Why in the hell would I want to go roller skating?"

Joe: "Why not?"

Diane: "Because I just screwed up, I'm very depressed, and uh, I don't know how to roller skate."

Joe: "That's perfect, I don't either. Come on."

Rick pulls up in a truck as Joe and Diane go into the roller rink.

As Joe and Diane are skating, they fall down and a little girl skates around them, laughing. After Joe and Diane get up, he starts coaching Diane on how to skate, which makes Diane realize that she's been duped and that Joe really does know how to skate.

Then the rink DJ says he now going to play a newly released song from the Eddie Wilson mystery tape, "Emotional Storm." As the song is playing, Joe tells Diane they're leaving because his legs are tired. Rick shows up and again asks Joe to be in his band. Joe grabs Rick by the shirt collar and pushes him against the wall, and angrily refuses Rick's offer. Then Joe and Diane go back to her apartment.

Joe and Diane go back to her apartment and make love. In the morning, Diane sees that Joe is not in bed and finds him in the kitchen. She sees that something is bothering him and asks him what's wrong. Joe tells Diane.

Joe: "A long time ago, I had a band. I wanted to create the perfect sound...the perfect music. I spent a whole year working on this album, and when I was done, I was proud of it; and then I handed it in and this guy at Satin Records told me it was garbage. He said I was finished. The album was unreleasable. I can't go through that again."

Diane: "I'm sure people have forgotten your old band by now. You could start..."

Joe (shaking his head): "No! That's the point! Nobody's forgotten! I hear it and see it every damn day on radio and television. It's driving me crazy. They like me better dead than alive!"

Diane: "What do you mean dead? What band are you talking about?"

Joe: "The Cruisers. Eddie and The Cruisers."

Diane: "What are you saying, Joe?"

Joe: "I'm Eddie Wilson."

Diane: "Oh, come on! You and ten other guys, right? I've seen those look-alike contests. Eddie Wilson died when his car went over a bridge. Didn't he? Didn't he?"

Joe: I still don't remember what happened. I was driving. The car hit the guardrail of the bridge, and I lost control. I remember swimming...I was thinking about Wendell Newton, the sax player from The Cruisers, that he was dead. He got out. I just split. I left everyone and everything behind, and I hurt a lot of people. For 20 years it's ben tearing me apart, and everybody thinks I'm dead. I don't know what I'm gonna do."

Diane: "Why not just tell everyone? I mean people want Eddie to be alive, Joe."

Joe: "Yeah. People like Lew Eisen, so he can get rick off an Eddie Wilson freak show."

Diane: "Then don't say who you are. Just play."

Joe: "I won't measure up."

Diane: "You should do it. You should do it."

Answer: "What you need is drums, keyboard, and a new bass player."

Joe and Rick go to a local restaurant, where Joe tells Rick that he'll be in his band. Little does Rick realize, but Joe has his own idea and is really looking to create a new band. Joe tells Rick, "First thing we gotta do is get together a new band." Rick responds, "What's wrong with my old band?" To which Joe replies, "Not much. What you need is drums, keyboard, and a new bass player."

Joe and Rick see "Sexy" Charlie Tanzie in a nightclub, and Rick says he's only playing that way for the crowd. Joe says he knows, he's seen him play before. Joe then said, "He'll do." Afterwards, Charlie comes up to Joe and tells him, "I heard you're looking for a serious dude. I should tell you I'm never serious, except with these." Charlie said, holding up his drumsticks, meaning he's serious when it comes to the drums.

Satin Records announced that they increased the reward money to $100,000 for anyone who can tell them who played backup on the mystery tape. The reporters and newscasters believe it's all a hoax, but Satin Record assures them it isn't.

Joe and Rick find Quinn in a bar. Quinn asked Joe what kind of music they're going to be playing, and Joe says, "The real kind."

Joe and Rick go to a concerto to watch Stewart play the piano. Rick is laughing and says he can't picture that guy playing for the band. Joe tells him Stewart can play eight different instruments and that he knows he'll do fine in the band.

After acquiring Charlie, Quinn, and Stewart, Joe's new band is formed. The band, named Rock Solid, is shown rehearsing in a bar. Joe tells Rick to play more intense. Rick begins playing, but playing hurriedly, and Joe tells him to stop. Rick then asks Joe to show him what intense is. Joe tells Rick a story that shows what intense means. Finally, Rick seems to know what Joe wants.
