Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Norman Thayer and his adult daughter Chelsea have never been close. When Chelsea visits during the summer and brings along her fiance' and future step-son, the fragile relationship between Norman and Chelsea reaches a breaking point. Which 1981 movie am I talking about here?

Answer: On Golden Pond

Norman and Ethel are left with the step-son when Chelsea and her fiance' go off to Europe to get married. Norman and the boy spend the summer fishing and building the relationship that Chelsea and her father never had. Henry Fonda and his real-life daughter Jane Fonda play the roles of Norman and Chelsea. Katherine Hepburn, as Ethel Thayer, maintains her role as mediator between the two.

Henry Fonda won the 1982 Best Actor Oscar for his performance in this movie.
2. This movie is a dark comedy about two air traffic controllers and the rivalry between them. Nick has always been top dog bringing in planes, but calm, flawless Russell joins the crew and throws Nick's little world into a tailspin. Which movie am I talking about here?

Answer: Pushing Tin

John Cusack (Nick) and Billy Bob Thorton (Russell) star as the two cutting edge air traffic controllers. Tensions between the two lead to an affair between Nick and Russell's wife, Mary, played by Angelina Jolie. When Russell and Mary leave town suddenly, Nick is left to pick up the pieces of his life.

As a side note, it was on the set of this movie that Billy Bob Thorton and Angelina Jolie first met.
3. This movie is a classic James Bond film, starring Sean Connery, and concerns a fiendish plot to disrupt the US economy by raiding Fort Knox. Can you name it?

Answer: Goldfinger

Bond is after Auric Goldfinger, an infamous international gold dealer behind the raid that Goldfinger names "Operation Grand Slam". Bond must face several unique adversaries in the process, including Oddjob, the silent guy who can kill you with a toss of his hat, and Goldfinger's pilot, Pussy Galore...Bond at his best!
4. This movie is a less well-known film starring Adrian Brody (Harry) as a kidnapper and Maura Tierney as the cop pursuing him. Somewhere in Manhattan, Harry kidnaps and buries alive the wife of a wealthy tycoon, and will abandon her if the ransom is not paid within 24 hours. Which film is it?

Answer: Oxygen

Maura Tierney (best known for her role as Dr. Abby Lockhart on the TV drama ER), plays Det. Madeline Foster, who has her own demons to deal with while on the trail of kidnapper Harry. Laila Robbins plays Frances, the woman in the box, whose intense fear of the dark leads to some very scary and convincing scenes underground.
5. Simon Lynch is an autistic boy who cracks a government code. When the project leader finds out that the code has been compromised, he orders the boy's life to be terminated. Which movie is it?

Answer: Mercury Rising

The code is called MERCURY, and the government is testing its security by publishing it in a puzzle magazine, which leads to Simon's involvement. Bruce Willis plays an outcast FBI agent trying to protect the boy after the goverment orders his assassination. Alec Baldwin is Lt. Colonel Kudrow, the code project leader.
6. This movie is the story of a teenage boy (played by Mackenzie Astin) who enters an extreme dog sled race in order to win the money to save his family's farm. What is this 1994 movie called?

Answer: Iron Will

This is one of my favorites movies. Loosely based on a true story, many obstacles face young Will Stoneman, including blizzards and ruthless competitors. Kevin Spacey plays Harry Kingsley, a reporter tracking the progress of the mushers.
7. Jake, Paden, Emmett, and Mal are four misfit friends who travel to a western town, circa 1880. They discover corruption and injustice there, and finally bring peace to the town. Can you name this movie?

Answer: Silverado

This western/comedy from 1985 had a huge cast, including Kevin Costner, Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, and Danny Glover as the four friends. John Cleese plays a sheriff, and Rosanna Arquette is the "heroine", courted by two of the friends.
8. Which movie from 1981, (mostly a comedy), tells the story of a wealthy white executive Walter Whitney, whose life is turned upside down when he discovers he has a black teenage son?

Answer: Carbon Copy

Walter Whitney (George Segal) is faced with the racism of a white, upper class society when his son Roger (Denzel Washington) shows up after the death of his mother, whom Walter once loved. As a result, Walter loses his job, car, money and marriage, but is left with the son he now has the opportunity to know. This is Denzel Washington's first major movie role.
9. This 1978 movie is a comedy/western, and stars Jim Dale and Don Knotts. It is the hilarious story of a father, his twin sons and their attempt to take control of a small western town. Can you name it?

Answer: Hot Lead and Cold Feet

Jim Dale plays three roles in this movie, the father and both twin sons. The sons, one a ruthless gunslinger, and the other an honest do-gooder, enter a high-stakes race rigged by their father. Both sons discover the corrupt mayor is planning to do away with both of them and take the money for himself. Don Knotts plays Denver Kid, the sheriff of the town.
10. Roy McAvoy is a washed-up golf pro now employed at a driving range. When he meets Molly Griswold, who happens to be the girlfriend of a long-time golf rival, Roy tries to qualify for the US Open and win her heart at the same time. Which film is this?

Kevin Costner plays Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, scraping by, living in an RV in west Texas. Don Johnson plays his long-time rival, David Simms. Rene Russo is Dr. Molly Griswold, Roy's inspiration and motivation to "make it big" again. Kevin Costner was nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in this film.
