Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Finch" begins with the title character caught outside during an extreme weather event. What was this natural disaster that he narrowly escapes?

Answer: Sandstorm

The titular character Finch Weinberg is played by Tom Hanks who is a survivor without any human companionship. The film begins with Finch searching buildings for supplies with his robot Dewey. While going back to his base Finch nearly gets swept away by a massive sandstorm.
2. In what city, the second-largest in its state, is the underground laboratory that Finch is living in at the beginning of the film?

Answer: St. Louis, Missouri

Finch was formerly a robotics engineer for a company in St. Louis, Missouri. He stayed in the laboratory as it provided shelter and it allowed him to continue his robotics work. Unfortunately, he is forced to flee when a storm expected to last 40 days is about to hit.
3. The humanoid robot that Finch creates is missing critical parts. What parts does Finch take from Dewey to complete his new robot?

Answer: Eyes

The robot Dewey utilized two lenses for eyes to be able to get images of the surrounding area. Finch had to use Dewey's eyes to place into his new humanoid robot but he promises Dewey that he'll replace his eyes as soon as he is able to.
4. Once Finch's humanoid robot is functional he asks the robot to tell him something interesting. What animal related factoid does he tell Finch?

Answer: Giraffes can survive without water longer than camels.

Finch uploaded tons of information into his humanoid robot but because of the storm only 72% of the intended information was uploaded. Even so, the robot was able to spit out numerous factoids such as that Albert Einstein was born with an abnormally large head.

The robot's animal factoid about giraffes is indeed correct as giraffes can survive three weeks without water whereas camels can survive for 15 days without water.
5. Finch creates four directives for his humanoid robot. What is the fourth and most important directive?

Answer: In Finch's absence robot must protect the welfare of dog.

The first directive Finch programs in his humanoid robot is to not harm humans through either direct or indirect action. We are not informed of what the second and third directives are but the fourth and most important one is that the robot must protect the welfare of dog in Finch's absence.

The robot tells Finch's dog that he knows 16,000 interesting facts about dogs. The dog's response is to pee on the robot.
6. What popular 20th century travel mementos does Finch's humanoid robot find in the RV on their first trip when they leave their makeshift underground laboratory home?

Answer: Postcards

When Finch, his dog, the robot Dewey and the humanoid robot leave St. Louis they travel in a 1984 Fleetwood Southwind RV. In the RV the humanoid robot finds numerous postcards and looks through them. Finch tells the robot that it is rude to go through one's personal things but he appreciates the robot's curiosity.
7. On Finch's first RV stop for food with his humanoid robot they break into a theatre in Springfield. What author is being promoted on the marquee of the theatre they enter?

Answer: William Shakespeare

Finch and his humanoid robot enter a theatre that has the words 'Springfield Shakespeare Festival' on its marquee. While inside they see posters promoting Shakespeare's works like "Much Ado About Nothing" which the robot informs Finch is a dramatic comedy about love, deception and other human misunderstandings.
8. What name does the humanoid robot choose for himself that Finch approves of since it is not already a dog's name?

Answer: Jeff

The humanoid robot and Finch are talking in the RV after they survive a tornado strike. The first name the robot comes up with for himself is Rover but Finch tells him that he should pick something else since it is a common dog's name. The robot then selects Jeff as his database informs him that it is not a common dog's name. Finch agrees that it is a good name, shakes the robot's hand and tells him "welcome to the world Jeff".
9. What bonding activity does the humanoid robot do with Finch's dog that encourages the dog to like and trust him more?

Answer: Fetch a tennis ball

The dog Goodyear did not like or trust Finch's robot Dewey or the humanoid robot Jeff. Finch tells Jeff that it is because Goodyear does not trust him. Shortly before Finch's death Jeff is shown how to toss a tennis ball to Goodyear so that he will bring it back.
10. A dying Finch, his dog and the humanoid robot eventually make it out west where it is safe to be outside. What natural event typically seen at more extreme latitudes does the group see?

Answer: Aurora borealis

We learn in the film "Finch" that solar flares have struck Earth making much of it inhabitable due to extreme radiation and temperatures in excess of 150 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. Finch is dying of the effects of this radiation and is amazed that when they head out west there is plant and insect life and he can take off his protective suit. That night they sit outside and view the amazing light show that is the aurora borealis.

The aurora borealis is typically only seen in the 'Auroral Oval' which encompasses the areas within a radius of 1,550 miles from the Earth's magnetic poles. The San Francisco area where the aurora borealis is seen in "Finch" is at a latitude of 37.77 degrees north, well outside the Auroral Oval.

Unfortunately, Finch succumbs to his radiation exposure. The film ends with the humanoid robot Jeff taking care of Finch's dog Goodyear and them making it to their destination of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
