Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Basil lives under the house of which famous literary detective?

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

Not only did Basil live under Holmes' Baker Street apartment, he was also a direct parody of the famous sleuth. With his neat (sometimes nauseating) cleanliness and order, Poirot doesn't seem like the kind of guy to have mice living anywhere near him.
2. Hiram Flaversham, Olivia's father, was voiced by Alan Young. What other Scottish-accented Disney character did Young voice?

Answer: Scrooge McDuck

"Bless me bagpipes!" Scrooge McDuck is best know as the rich central character of "Duck Tales". Scrooge McDuck also became Ebenezer Scrooge in "Mickey's Christmas Carol".
3. Dawson says he "just arrived in London after lengthy service in Afghanistan." What regiment was he in?

Answer: the Queen's 66th

Nigel Bruce is the most highly recognized screen Watson. Dawson is about as close as you could get to a mouse-like Nigel Bruce.
4. Which of these is NOT one of Ratigan's past crimes as detailed in his song, "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind"?

Answer: the "Buckingham Heist"

Ratigan: "From the brain that brought you the Big Ben Caper[...] and wonderous things like the Tower Bridge Job, that cunning display that made Londoners sob."
Henchmen: "Even meaner, you mean it? Worse than the widows and orphans you drowned?"
5. Which character from "Alice in Wonderland" makes a cameo appearance in "The Great Mouse Detective"?

Answer: Bill the Lizard

He is in Ratigan's gang. He kind of stands out, because the rest of the gang is composed entirely of mice.
6. In the scene with the shadows of Holmes and Watson, what kind of music does Holmes say is "introspective, and I want to introspect"?

Answer: German

This is a line from the Sherlock Holmes book "The Red-Headed League".
In the book, Holmes went on to say that the German music was more to his taste than French or Italian.
7. How many years has Queen Mousetoria been ruling at the time of the story?

Answer: 60 years

It is her diamond jubilee.
8. What is the name of the seedy pub visited by Basil and Dawson?

Answer: The Rat Trap

This is written on a sign right in front of the door of the pub.
9. Which of these is NOT one of the weapons incorporated into Ratigan's death trap for Basil?

Answer: a knife

I love this scene in the movie. Ratigan is so flamboyant, but somehow, to ensure Basil's demise, this doesn't seem like overkill.
10. Which of these was NOT on Fidget's list of things to get at the toy store?

Answer: guns

His list reads: Get the Following- Tools, Gears, Girl, Uniforms.
11. How does Ratigan summon his pampered pet cat, Felicia?

Answer: a bell

That is one FAT cat! How many of his henchmen has Ratigan fed her? If it wasn't for the big bow and those rolls of fat, Felicia might be almost scary.
12. Which of these is NOT one of Fidget's handicaps?

Answer: he's mute

For some reason, Fidget seems to forget which leg he's missing. Through most of the movie, his right leg is the wooden one, but in the scene where Olivia stomps on his foot, she stomps on his left foot. The peg leg is on the right. The fact that he's flightless probably has something to do with the crippled wing.
13. Basil gives several commands to Toby throughout the movie. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: roll over

Toby is so cute! I think "sit" and "sic 'em" came at pretty memorable times. Just before Basil and Dawson enter The Rat Trap, Basil whispers for Toby to stay.
14. Bartholomew is a character in the movie with a definite weakness for something. What was that weakness for?

Answer: alcohol

During the song "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind", a VERY drunk Bartholomew makes the mistake of calling Ratigan a rat, and is soon fed to Felicia.
15. When Ratigan has the list of new laws to be decreed at the end, one of the laws levies a heavy tax against "parasites and sponges, including the elderly, the infirm, and especially little children." What number law was this?

Answer: 96

He was barely down the list at all. If that was already 96 laws, he must have had thousands more to read.
16. One of the funniest things in the movie is the fact that Basil can't get Olivia Flaversham's name right. Which of these does he NOT call her?

Answer: Flangerbanger

Olivia has the cutest voice, supplied by Susanne Pollatschek. She also has one of the few well-rounded child personalities in the Disney canon. (I know she's not a human child, but you know what I mean.)
17. Ratigan has a pet peeve. What is it?

Answer: being called a rat

Ratigan flies into a rage when he is called a rat. He is, in all reality, a rat, but for some reason he just can't be proud of his species. During one of his rages, he yells "I am NOT a rat!" His henchmen try to soothe him, saying, "Of course you're not. You're a mouse... a big mouse."
18. At the end of the Big Ben sequence the clock strikes the hour, and the vibrations of the bell sends Ratigan flying off of the clock hand. What time does the clock say?

Answer: 10:00

Apparently Big Ben is the name of the bell actually enclosed inside the clock. I never knew that. I thought the clock was called Big Ben.
19. When the woman client shows up at the end of the movie, Basil declares that she is missing what kind of ring?

Answer: emerald

I have no clue how he would know that, but that's just the kind of deduction that Basil's human counterpart, Holmes, would make.
20. In the first few seconds of the film, right after the setting and date appear on the screen, a passing carriage blows a newspaper away. What section of the newspaper is it?

Answer: Business

I don't know why the animators felt the need to include a stray Business paper.
