Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you complete the following movie quote? Sugar: "Water polo? Isn't that terribly dangerous?" Junior: "I'll say. I had two ponies ____."

Answer: Drowned under me

This quote comes from Sugar (played by Marilyn Monroe) and Junior aka Joe/Josephine/Shell Oil Junior (played by Tony Curtis) in the delightful 1958 comedy "Some Like It Hot" during one of their several conversations. The film relates the tale of two musicians in a speakeasy (Curtis - and Jack Lemmon as Jerry/Gerald/Daphne) who witness the mafia bump off members of a rival gang. Fleeing for their lives, they disguise themselves as two rather grim looking women, and join an all girls band heading south on a train to Miami.

The lovely Sugar is the singer and ukulele player in the band. This movie, nominated as the best comedy of all time, is extremely entertaining. The two musicians, who both have fallen for Sugar, find it very difficult to maintain their guises as women under the circumstances.
2. Do you know the ending of this movie quote? "Roses are red, violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and ____."

Answer: So am I

The 1991 film "What About Bob" stars Bill Murray as the extremely annoying patient, Bob Wiley, of a smug and self-satisfied psychiatrist, Dr Leo Marvin (played by Richard Dreyfuss). Bob has assorted mental health issues - or, as in the above quote, imagines them anyway - and believes he cannot be helped. However, he feels so good after an introductory session with Dr Leo, that he follows the doctor and his family to where they have gone for a month's vacation. What ensues is an hilarious tale of poor Dr Leo trying everything he can to get rid of the very annoying Bob, and slowly being driven over the edge in the attempt. The ending is absolutely hilarious as Dr Leo, now completely insane, attempts to cure Bob with "death therapy" - but I won't ruin it for you.

The quote in this question is from Bob after Dr Leo has attempted to have him committed. Bob, however, is quickly released because of the ease and humour he displays to the staff of the hospital as he tells them therapy jokes, such as the one above.
3. What completes the following movie quote? "We shouldn't get married...We have nothing in common. You love horses. I don't trust them. Their shoes are permanent. Who makes that kind of a commitment ____?"

Answer: To a shoe

"Arthur", made in 1981, is set in New York and stars Dudley Moore as a more or less permanently intoxicated millionaire, Arthur, along with his brilliantly understated long time valet/father figure, Hobson (John Gielgud), and his love interest Linda Marolla (played by Liza Minelli). Arthur is due to inherit an even larger fortune, but only if he marries, Susan (played by Jill Eikenberry), the daughter of one of his father's colleagues, a woman he does not love. Along comes Linda and Arthur falls in love with her instead, after saving her from a shoplifting charge. Hobson, sensing this is the best choice for Arthur, sets about encouraging the relationship, but falls ill and dies before he can see it through to a successful conclusion. Arthur, who has been off the drink, is devastated and goes on a bender. Of course you know, being a comedy, that it ends happily but only at the last moment of course.

The above quote in the movie comes when Arthur is with Susan, trying to talk her out of the marriage.
4. What completes this movie quote? "To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people! I've known sheep that could outwit you. I've worn dresses____."

Answer: With higher IQs

This quote (from Jamie Lee Curtis to Kevin Kline) comes from the hilarious 1988 comedy, "A Fish Called Wanda", starring John Cleese as an initially stuffy upper-class British solicitor, Archie Leach; Jamie Lee Curtis as con-artist supreme, Wanda Gershwitz (after whom an important fish is named); the brilliant Kevin Kline as the British hating, definitely moronic, strong arm, Otto West, and Michael Palin as Ken Pile, a stuttering, animal loving, right hand man for a gangster, George. Throw a huge jewel heist into the mix, and in a tale of cross, double-cross and double double-cross, Wanda and Otto betray George but can't find the jewels or the key to where they've been moved, Wanda seduces Archie who is hired to defend George, to see if he knows - but falls in love with him instead - Otto falls out with everyone and swallows Ken's pet goldfish as he tortures him to find the location of the key - and on it goes. You'll have to watch this very funny movie for yourself to see what happens next. One of the finale highlights though, is Ken's maniacal shouting of "R-r-r-venge! R-r-r-venge!" as he drives an extremely slow moving steamroller towards Otto, who is trapped in wet cement - before his stutter disappears forever. Makes me laugh every time.

The above quote comes from Wanda, during an argument with the incredibly stupid Otto - who fancies himself as an intellectual.
5. Can you finish off this movie quote? "I'm sure that we can handle this situation maturely, just like the responsible adults that we are. Isn't that right, ____.?"

Answer: Mister Poopy Pants

"The Naked Gun 2 and a Half: The Smell of Fear" (1991) is the second of the "Naked Gun" series of movies and takes place after Frank and Jane have separated. Starring Leslie Nielsen as the continually inept police officer, Lieutenant Frank Drebin, and Priscilla Presley as love interest, Jane, this is your typical everything goes wrong until the very end action comedy. Complete with a nuclear device just about to detonate until stopped at the last second, some pretty amusing lines are scattered throughout this film, one of which is quoted above. If you're after some light-hearted entertainment, this film is the one for you. I personally don't like this type of comedy, but "Mister Poopy Pants" simply had to be used.

This quote in this question is from a verbal spat between Frank and Quentin Hapsburg (played by Robert Goulet), who is a Hexagon Oil executive - and Jane's current boyfriend - and of whom Frank is very jealous.
6. How about this movie quote - can you complete it? "Insanity runs in my family. It ____."

Answer: Practically gallops

Released in 1944, and based on the play of the same name, "Arsenic and Old Lace" is a wonderfully dark comedy about two elderly aunts of Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) who are bumping off lonely old bachelors to put them out of their misery. This is carried out by advertising rooms for rent, selecting likely customers, and then poisoning them with elderberry wine spiked with "arsenic, strychnine and just a pinch of cyanide". Mortimer, only just married, and with his bride gone home to her father's home to collect her luggage, is horrified. Couple these cheerfully logical dark deeds, with his elderly uncle, Teddy, who lives with the aunts and who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt - periodically shouting "Charge!" and tearing up the internal stairs, and you'll understand Mortimer's quote above. Teddy thinks the bodies he helps the aunts bury in the basement are men who died from yellow fever while working on the Panama Canal. This is such a beautiful screwy comedy that you simply must try to watch it if it ever comes on late night television. I love it.

The quote comes from a section in the movie, where Mortimer, after learning of the murders going on at his aunts, tries to convince his new wife that he simply can't stay married to her because of the fear of insanity being passed on. You'll be pleased to know though, that at the movie's conclusion, it is revealed that Mortimer is not a Brewster after all, but the son of the family cook and a chef on a steamer.
7. What is the ending of this movie quote? Classified: "You were supposed to handcuff them!" Short Fuse: "But they don't have hands, they just have flippers and I have flippers. So it's ____. "

Answer: Flipping useless

Don't you just love a good pun? "Penguins of Madagascar" is a 2014 spy comedy starring the voices of stars such as Benedict Cumberbatch (playing Classified, a grey wolf from Britain); John Malkovich (playing Dave, an evil octopus) and Ken Jeong (playing Short Fuse, a Belgian harp seal who is a demolitions expert). With a story line that sees four unlikely heroic penguins chased half way around the globe by Dave's henchmen, and an evil plot to kidnap every penguin out of every zoo in the world and turn them into hideous monsters, the very clever and funny dialogue in this movie is sure to guarantee more than just few laughs.

This quote above appears in the scene where an elite task force agency of animals (The North Wind), planning to rescue the captives, are trying to work out a diversionary tactic.
8. Do you know the ending of this movie quote? Jane: "Would you like a nightcap?" Frank: "No, thank you, I don't ___."

Answer: Wear them

The first of the "Naked Gun" series, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" (1988), this film introduces the characters of Frank and Jane (Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley) when first they meet and eventually fall in love. Another spy action comedy, this time Frank, on holidays in Beirut, must act to foil a terrorist plot against the United States, and protect Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as well, during her visit to Los Angeles. Some great snappy lines in this movie, and, if slapstick is your thing, then this is the one for you.

This quote is taken from one of the several electrifying, sexual chemistry charged conversations between Frank and Jane, before they finally get together. They positively sizzle on the screen.
9. How about this movie quote - can you complete it? "By Grabthar's hammer, you shall be ___."

Answer: Avenged

I just love the 1999 science fiction comedy movie "Galaxy Quest" and have watched it many times. It's a complete spoof on just about every science fiction television series or movie ever made, and in particular the wonderful "Star Trek". This is a movie about actors who once starred in a popular TV series, who have been taken into space to save an alien race (the Thermians) from a monstrous villain. Mistakenly though, the Thermians have been watching the TV series from afar and believe their characters are real. And the story line continues from there. Just a few of the excellent cast from "Galaxy Quest" include the following:

Tim Allen, playing the heavy drinking has-been, Jason Nesmith - who plays the fearless commander Taggart. "Never give up. Never surrender!"
Sigourney Weaver playing the once-in-love with Nesmith, Gwen Marco - who plays the ship's communication officer who repeats every line, even when they're in English.
Tony Shalhoub portraying Fred Kwan - who plays the ship's laid back engineer, Sergeant Chen.
Daryl Mitchell playing Tommy Webber - who plays the ship's resident boy genius, Lieutenant Laredo.
And my very favourite: Alan Rickman playing Alexander Dane - who plays Dr Lazarus, the ship's science officer, who is a member of the Mak'tar species of beings. Alexander is in a state of seething rebellion at not only having to wear his ridiculous make-up every time they appear at fan conventions, but particularly at having to utter his famous line, "By Grabthar's hammer, you shall be avenged!" Oh, DO watch this movie if you get a chance. It's very, VERY funny.

The quote above, which he hates so much, is finally said by him with deep and rather moving emotion towards the close of the film, when one of the young Thermians, who thinks Dr Lazarus is wonderful, is murdered by the foe.
10. How about this movie quote - can you complete it? "No, he was hit by a Guinness truck, so it was quite literally the drink ___."

Answer: That killed him

Isn't that an hilarious line? It takes place when Miranda asks Mrs Doubtfire about her late husband and what became of him. "Mrs Doubtfire" (1993) is absolutely packed with hilarious dialogue of this kind. This very funny movie tells the story of a divorced American actor, Daniel Hillard (played by the brilliant Robin Williams) who loves and misses his three children so much, that he disguises himself as an elderly Scottish woman and tricks his unsuspecting ex-wife, Miranda (the lovely Sally Field) into hiring him as her housekeeper, so he can be with them every day. Toss in the delectable Stu Dunmeyer (played by the yummy Pierce Brosnan) as Miranda's new boyfriend, and you have a side-splittingly funny eternal triangle.

The only thing I didn't like about this lovely movie was its ending.

The Hillards don't get back together, but reach an amicable truce instead. It's a comedy. It should have had a happy ending.
