Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which movie, released in 1989, contained the quote "Excellent"? It was repeated several times in the movie by one or the other of the two main characters or sometimes simultaneously.

Answer: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Bill and Ted go on a historical journey to find famous people in the past and bring them to the present for their high school history final report. If they don't pass their friendship will be in jeopardy since Ted's father has threatened to send him to military school if he flunks out of high school.

The future of the world apparently depends on them staying together and forming their band, The Wyld Stallions. Because of this an enlightened cool guy from the future, Rufus (George Carlin), visits them and gives them a magic phone booth which they use to travel through time and collect the historical figures for their report. Anytime things work out and things are going well, either Bill or Ted says "Excellent," sometimes saying it at the same time (with screaming guitar riff in the background).
2. Which hugely popular movie from 1984 has the tag line "Who You Gonna Call?" which was also in the theme song by Ray Parker, Jr.?

Answer: Ghostbusters

The Ghostbusters are three out of work paranormal psychologists. They are Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis take the job very seriously. Harold Ramis has invented a way to recognize and capture ghosts while Bill Murray wisecracks his way through the entire movie.

They become very successful and well-known in their city (New York). They make a few commercials and their tag line is always "Who you gonna call?" with the obvious answer being "Ghostbusters". Ray Parker Jr. wrote the song for the movie and it was #1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart for three weeks and topped the charts in several other countries as well.
3. Which 1984 release has a mentor instructing his protege to wash and wax his classic cars with the instructions of "Wax on. Wax off."? This technique involved circular motion of both hands in opposite directions to apply and take off the wax.

Answer: The Karate Kid

Mr. Miyagi, played by Pat Morita was telling Daniel (Ralph Macchio) how to wax the cars. Unbeknownst to Daniel he was getting him to use the same muscles he would need to develop in order to be successful at karate. Daniel learned karate from Mr. Miyagi and participated and won a tournament over the same bullies that harassed him when he moved to the neighborhood.

He also put quite a shine on the cars.
4. This 1995 Pixar movie was its first full-length feature. In this story the toys come to life when people are not around and have big adventures. One of the main characters was a space ranger who didn't know he was a toy. His tagline was "To infinity and beyond." Name the film.

Answer: Toy Story

The first time Buzz Lightyear spoke his famous line he was trying to convince Woody and the other toys that he could fly. He climbed to the top of the bedpost, said his famous line and jumped. He first bounced off a ball on the floor and then caught a ride on an airplane hanging from the ceiling before landing back on the bed.

He thought this was proof that he could indeed fly. Buzz Lightyear's name was inspired by Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon.
5. The 1987 movie that contains this question and answer was the first of four very successful installments. "Have you ever met anybody you didn't kill?" "Well, I haven't killed you yet." Which movie was it?

Answer: Lethal Weapon

This exchange takes place between Sgt. Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and Det. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) just after Riggs shoots a suspect that Murtaugh had wanted to question. The suspect then falls into a pool and is vacuum sealed in the pool cover so if the gunshot hadn't killed him, he would have drowned anyway. Riggs' shot saved Murtaugh's life so the sarge begrudgingly choked out a thank you. "Lethal Weapon" was such a successful buddy movie that it generated three more movies and both Mel Gibson and Danny Glover repeated their roles in all of them.
6. In 1994 one man recalls the words of his friend. Those words, "Get busy living or get busy dying", move him to take action to improve his situation. Name the film.

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

This movie was adapted from a short story by Stephen King and like many of King's stories was set in Maine. Andy (Tim Robbins), an educated and innocent man, is convicted of killing his wife and sentenced to a life term in Shawshank prison. He endures years of abuse, cruelty and misery but Andy uses his education and intelligence to endure and overcome his misfortune.

He and Red (Morgan Freeman), the narrator of the story, become good friends. Andy keeps books for the corrupt warden and knows all the ins and outs of the dirty business going on behind the prison walls.

When he eventually escapes he is able to claim all the money the warden has stashed and leave the country for Mexico a very rich man. After Red is paroled and considering suicide he recalls Andy's words and manages to join Andy in Mexico.
7. In 2009 this movie franchise took a trip down memory lane to explore the origins of the friendships between the various characters. "Live Long and Prosper" is spoken by one of the main characters, and he has spoken it many, many times before. Which film is this?

Answer: Star Trek

Mr. Spock's most famous line is repeated many times in both TV episodes and movies. It was usually said as a farewell along with a hand gesture. In this movie it is spoken by Mr. Spock from the future.
8. In 1984 a group of high schools students are put to the ultimate test. As they fight back their high school mascot becomes their battle cry, "Wolverines". Name the film.

Answer: Red Dawn

After World War III breaks out and enemy paratroopers arrive during the school day on the campus of the local high school, several students flee to the mountains of Colorado. They vow to fight back and begin a series of guerrilla attacks on the enemy.

They are often very successful in their attacks. They always leave their calling card "Wolverines" as evidence that they were the attackers. They continue their battles while facing many complicated moral issues that arise as a consequence of war. In the end all perish in war except two who escape to the west and live to tell the story.

The cast had to go through eight weeks of training similar to boot camp before filming began.
9. In 1981 the first of a series of movies was released and we find out the only thing in the world that our dashing hero is afraid of in the following quote: "Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?" Name the film.

Answer: Raiders of the Lost Ark

While searching for the lost Ark of the Covenant, Indiana Jones discovers the Well of Souls, believed to be the resting place of the Ark. When the opening is uncovered and he first gets a look inside, it is a very deep hole full of artifacts and snakes.

He knows he has to enter but also knows he will have to face his worst fear. As many snakes as could be found in every pet shop in the area were purchased for the Well of Souls scenes. However, they didn't satisfy the director's vision, so hoses were cut up and added to the scene.

There were plenty of real snakes though so a piece of glass was used to separate them from Harrison Ford. If you look closely you can see a reflection in the glass.
10. The next quote was spoken in 1989 in the third movie of one of the most successful series of movies ever made. It was said by a very, very old knight. "He chose poorly." What film is this?

Answer: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones, joined by his father played by Sean Connery, once again had a run-in with the Nazis while searching for yet another famous, holy artifact. This time it is the cup of Christ, the Holy Grail for which they seek. When it is finally located they find it guarded by one of the original knights from the crusades.

He is still alive because drinking from the cup sustains life. However, there are lots of cups to choose from. The American working with the Nazis wants to drink and the cup is chosen by Elsa, who has been helping them up to this point.

He drinks and is destroyed immediately since it was not the right cup. The knight then observes that "He chose poorly". Indiana's father has been shot by the Nazis as incentive for Indiana to retrieve the Holy Grail for them.

Indiana chooses the right cup and is able to save his dying father.
