Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I don't think having dinner with someone is a crime." "Not yet." (Hint: Michael Douglas and Glenn Close are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Fatal Attraction

In this scene lawyer Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) is having dinner with copy editor Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) when Dan's wife is out of town. Dan has just met Alex at a party and now has run into her again. He says line one and she replies with line two. Their small talk leads to a brief affair, after which Alex becomes obsessed with Dan. When Dan is annoyed that Alex has shown up at his apartment, she says, "Well, what am I supposed to do? You won't answer my calls, you change your number. I mean, I'm not gonna be ignored, Dan!" Then, in a chilling turn of events, she begins to stalk Dan and his family.

In the 1988 Academy Awards "Fatal Attraction" was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture but lost out to "The Last Emperor". The American Film Institute list of "100 Years...100 Heroes and Villains" had Alex Forrest as villain number 7 (the top four villains are Hannibal Lecter from "The Silence of the Lambs", Norman Bates from "Psycho", Darth Vader from "The Empire Strikes Back" and The Wicked Witch of the West from "The Wizard of Oz"). The term "bunny boiler" has come to mean an obsessive, psychopathic female who stalks a lover who has spurned her (from the infamous scene in this movie where Alex boils the pet rabbit of Dan's little daughter).
2. "That's a smart mouse, Del. He's like a circus mouse." "Correct. That's just what he is, too. He's a circus mouse. When I get outta here, he's gonna make me rich." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices

Answer: The Green Mile

In this scene, death row prisoner John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) watches a jailhouse mouse go to and roll back a spool to fellow death row prisoner Eduard "Del" Delacroix (Michael Jeter) in his jail cell and says line one. Delacroix replies with line two. In a later scene, mean-spirited guard Percy Wetmore (Doug Hutchison) deliberately stomps on and kills this mouse, but Coffey's magical powers bring the mouse back to life. "The Green Mile" tells the story of Depression-era death row prison guard Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) and huge prisoner Coffey, who is accused of murdering two little girls (he is later seen by the guards to be innocent).

In the 2000 Academy Awards, "The Green Mile" was nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, but didn't win any. Best Picture that year went to "American Beauty". This movie is based on a Stephen King novel.
3. "How do you shoot the devil in the back? What if you miss?" "All right, let's get back to the pier." (Hint: Kevin Spacey is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Usual Suspects

In this scene, U.S. Customs Agent David Kujan (Chazz Palminteri) is questioning Roger "Verbal" Kint (Kevin Spacey), a small-time con man and cripple, about a massive explosion and fire that has taken place on a ship docked at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro Bay. Police investigating this explosion have found 27 dead bodies and $91 million worth of supposed drug money, and the only survivors are a severely burned and very scared Hungarian gangster and Kint. Verbal's story, which is told through flashbacks, begins six weeks earlier with five criminals being brought in for a lineup for a hijacked truck (the usual suspects) and ends with the ship blowing up and a mysterious, unseen criminal named Keyser Soze. There is a surprising ending, which I won't give away in case you haven't seen this movie! A list on the IMDb of "Twists In The End" rated "The Usual Suspects" as beating out "Psycho," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Chinatown," "The Shining," "The Sixth Sense" and "Witness for the Prosecution."

In the 1996 Academy Awards "The Usual Suspects" won two Oscars, including Kevin Spacey for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. The term "Keyser Soze" has come to mean someone who everyone has heard about, but no one has ever met in person.
4. "I put a curse on that plane." "I don't believe in curses." (Hint: Cher is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Moonstruck

In this scene, widowed Italian-American bookkeeper Loretta Castorini (Cher) is at the airport to say goodbye to her fiancé Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), who is going to Palermo, Sicily to see his dying mother. While watching his plane taxi to takeoff, she starts talking to an old woman who is also watching the plane. The old woman is bitter at her sister, who is on the plane, for stealing a boyfriend from her fifty years earlier ("Today she told me that she didn't even love him. She took him to be strong on me.") She has cursed the plane so "that the green Atlantic water should swallow her up!" The old woman says line one and Loretta replies with line two. This movie tells the wonderfully human story of Loretta, who is torn between her fiancé and his brother.

In the 1988 Academy Awards "Moonstruck" was nominated for Best Picture but lost out to "The Last Emperor". Cher won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Loretta Castorini and Olympia Dukakis won one for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Loretta's mother Rose. Vincent Gardenia was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Loretta's father Cosmo, but lost to Sean Connery in "The Untouchables". "Moonstruck" is one of my all-time favorite movies.
5. "Laura! ... Laura! ... Laura!" "That was the night that I died, and someone else was saved. Someone who was afraid of water, but learned to swim. Someone who knew there would be one moment when he wouldn't be watching. Someone who knew that the darkness from the broken lights would show the way." (Hint: Julia Roberts is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Sleeping with the Enemy

In this scene, Martin Burney (Patrick Bergin) is calling his wife's name frantically from a sailboat and his wife Laura (Julia Roberts) begins a voiceover, explaining to the audience how she manages to fake her death at sea and get away from her abusive, controlling, obsessive husband. He has talked her into taking a night sailboat ride and when he isn't looking she jumps overboard and hides behind a nearby buoy. She has previously broken some overhead boardwalk lights near their beach home so she will know in what direction to swim back. She then moves from Cape Cod to Iowa and assumes a new identity. He at first thinks she has drowned, but gradually realizes she has run away from him and a thriller of a story develops. I won't tell you the ending in case you haven't seen it!

This movie won one minor award in 1992 but no Oscars. The ominous-sounding "Symphonie Fantastique" by composer Hector Berlioz (similar to the music in the opening scene of "The Shining") is featured in this movie.
6. "You alright there, Margie?" "No, I just think I'm gonna barf." [stands up] "Well, that passed. Now I'm hungry again." (Hint: Frances McDormand is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Fargo

In this scene, Police Chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) and her fellow officer Lou (Bruce Bohne) are investigating a triple homicide outside Fargo, North Dakota. Marge, who is pregnant, bends over near a wrecked car as if examining something on the ground and a concerned Lou says line one. Marge says the first part of line two, then stands back up and says the second part of line two. In the events leading up to this scene, car salesman Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) engineers a kidnapping of his own wife, with the intent of solving his financial problems with the ransom money he expects will be paid by her wealthy father. However, persistent investigation by Marge starts to unravel his scheme.

In the 1996 Academy Awards "Fargo" won two Oscars, including Frances McDormand for Best Actress in a Leading Role. It was also nominated in five other categories, including Best Picture but lost to "The English Patient". Although the credits say this film is "based on a true story," this is not entirely accurate. This specific crime never happened, but the story is a blending of elements of two well-known Minnesota crimes that did occur. On November 15, 2001 a 28-year-old Japanese woman, Takako Konishi, was found dead near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. According to witnesses who saw her a few days previously, she had traveled to the area in search of the big chunk of ransom money (shown in the movie buried by one of the kidnappers), apparently believing the opening caption stating that the film is based on a true story.
7. "He's a southpaw. I don't want you messing with southpaws. They do everything backwards." "Southpaw nothing! I'll drop him in three." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Rocky

In this scene, heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) has chosen Philadelphia club fighter Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to be his next opponent based on Rocky's nickname "The Italian Stallion". He smells a marketing bonanza. But his trainer (Tony Burton) starts reading Rocky's data sheet, notices he is left-handed and says line one. A confident Apollo Creed replies with line two. In the events leading up to this scene the regularly-scheduled opponent to Apollo has to withdraw at the last minute and Philadelphia fight promoter Jergens (Thayer David) scrambles to find a suitable opponent. When none of the obvious choices are available, Apollo suggests giving a local underdog a shot.

In the 1977 Academy Awards, "Rocky" won three Oscars, including Best Picture. Sylvester Stallone, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith, and Talia Shire were all nominated for awards but didn't win. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for "Rocky" in just three days after he saw a match between boxing great Muhammad Ali and an unknown club fighter named Chuck Wepner in which Wepner went the distance. The famous line from this movie "Yo, Adrian" was voted as the number 80 all-time best movie quote by the American Film Institute (AFI). The theme song "Gonna Fly Now" played by Bill Conti was a big hit in the late 1970s and is still frequently heard at sporting events.
8. "Well, at least I don't have to move over to let a funeral go by, man." "Your car is uglier than I am. Oops, that didn't come out right." (Hint: Ron Howard and Richard Dreyfuss are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: American Graffiti

In this scene, '32 Ford deuce coupe driver John Milner (Paul Le Mat) is cruising down the main street of a small California town at night and is trading insults with driver Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford), who is driving a '55 Chevy. After Milner says, "Yeah, well, your car's so ugly you must have to sneak up on the pumps to get a tank of gas", Falfa says line one. Milner has just previously gotten an uninvited passenger in his car, a young girl named Carol (Mackenzie Phillips), who has run over to his hot-rod from another car while both are stopped at a traffic light. Milner calls her a "grungy little twerp" and tries to get rid of her, but she threatens to cry rape if he doesn't back off. Carol is cracking up at these insults and says the first part of line two, but then realizes she misspoke and says the second part. "American Graffiti" tells the story of Curt Henderson (Richard Dreyfuss) and Steve Bolander (Ron Howard), who are spending one last night with some of their friends in their hometown before heading off to college in the morning. "American Graffiti" was the first big commercial success of director George Lucas (of "Star Wars" fame).

In the 1974 Academy Awards "American Graffiti" was nominated in five categories, including Best Picture, but lost to "The Sting". Mackenzie Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips (of The Mamas and Papas) and his first wife Suzy, in her first acting job at age 12. It is sometimes erroneously believed that the American TV series "Happy Days" was a spin off from this movie. In actuality, the pilot for the series was seen on the TV show "Love, American Style" and it aired before "American Graffiti" began production. The episode was titled "Love and Happy Days" and it aired on February 25, 1972. That episode featured eventual "Happy Days" cast members Ron Howard, Anson Williams and Marion Ross.
9. "What do they call you?" "They call me MISTER Tibbs!" (Hint: Rod Steiger is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: In the Heat of the Night

In this scene, bigoted police chief of a small southern town Bill Gillespie (played wonderfully by Rod Steiger) is questioning a black man named Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), who is suspected of a local murder. Gillespie is suspicious of all the money in Tibbs' wallet and wants to know where he got it. When Tibbs says it is from his job, Gillespie wants to know what that is. When Tibbs says he is a police detective in Philadelphia, PA, Gillespie is dumbfounded. Then he asks line one and an incensed Tibbs replies with line two. Tibbs is in the area to visit his mother, but his supervisor back in Philadelphia directs him to stay there briefly and help Gillespie solve this case.

In the 1968 Academy Awards "In the Heat of the Night" won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Rod Steiger. This movie was filmed in Sparta, Illinois but the movie is set in a Mississippi town, which was also named Sparta. This allowed the producers to avoid the cost of changing local signs. This movie was followed by two sequels: "They Call Me MISTER Tibbs" (1970), and "The Organization" (1971). Sidney Poitier played Detective Virgil Tibbs in both movies.
10. "You do that, I'm gonna tell him you're seeing somebody else while he's on the stage." "I have two words for you: green card." (Hint: Robin Williams and Gene Hackman are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Birdcage

In this scene, nightclub owner Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) has just warned his gay Guatemalan house boy Agador Spartacus (Hank Azaria) with the line, "Now take that wig off or I'll tell Albert you're wearing it", referring to the female impersonator Albert Goldman (Nathan Lane), who is the star of his show. Agador says line one and Armand responds with line two. Azaria's portrayal of Agador Spartacus is wonderful. He is perhaps best known to American audiences for the many voices he provides for the television show "The Simpsons." This movie tells the hilarious story of gay parents of a straight young man who agree to act as straight when meeting the ultra-conservative, moralistic parents of the young man's fiancée. There are so many good lines/scenes in this movie-several had me laughing so hard I was gasping for breath!

In the 1997 Academy Awards "The Birdcage" was nominated for an award but didn't win. The last lines in this movie are classic: moralistic Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman) is dressed in drag (to escape reporters waiting at Armand's female-impersonator club) and looks like an unattractive, beefy female. He spots his chauffeur and says, "Meet me in 20 minutes at the corner of El Dorado and Palm." The chauffeur responds, "Lady, not for a million dollars."
