Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You can either have the money and the hammer or you can walk out of here. You can't have both. What do you want?" "I just wanna get outta here." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Casino

In the events leading up to this scene, skillful gambling handicapper Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro) agrees to manage the Tangiers casino in Las Vegas for mobsters. In this scene he has detected a team of two cheating at the game of blackjack (one partner could see a dealer's hole card from another table and signals the high-stakes partner with an electronic leg taping device). Rothstein pulls the signaler into a back room and has his men break the man's hand with several hammer blows. Then the man's partner is escorted in.

The signaler cries to his partner, "Look what they did to my hand, man!" Rothstein then says line one and the scared partner replies with line two. In the 1996 Academy Awards, Sharon Stone (she played call girl/wife Ginger McKenna Rothstein) was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role but lost the Oscar to Susan Sarandon in "Dead Man Walking." Director Martin Scorsese stated that he created the "head-in-the-vise" scene as a sacrifice, certain that it would be censored out.

He hoped this scene would draw the censor's attention away from other violent scenes in the movie, but when the MPAA did not object to the vise scene, it was left in. This movie was based on the real lives of Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal (the movie character Sam "Ace" Rothstein played by Robert De Niro), Anthony "Tony the Ant" Spilotro (the movie character Nicky Santoro played by Joe Pesci) and Geraldine McGee (the movie character Ginger McKenna played by Sharon Stone).
2. "I have a head for business and a bod for sin. Is there anything wrong with that?" "Uh, no. No." (Hint: Melanie Griffith is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Working Girl

In the events leading up to this scene Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) is an ambitious Wall Street secretary who earns a degree at night school. However, she is constantly passed over for promotions in favor of applicants with more prestigious schools on their resumes.

Then her boss Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver) takes credit for one of Tess' business acquisition ideas. When Katherine breaks a leg in a skiing accident, Tess decides to pretend she is the executive and present her idea herself.

In this scene Tess meets a man socially and, after a drink of tequila on top of antihistamines, says line one. He stammers line two. The next day she learns he is Jack Trainer (Harrison Ford), the investment banker she is arranging this business deal with.

In the 1989 Academy Awards "Working Girl" won the Oscar for Best Original Song ("Let the River Run" by Carly Simon) and was nominated in five more categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "Rain Man"). Kevin Spacey's role in this movie was a last-minute replacement. Spacey learned his lines in a car back seat while on the way to the shoot. Director Mike Nichols was under pressure to finish the scene quickly so he wouldn't have to postpone his wedding to U.S. television correspondent Diane Sawyer two days later.
3. "Well of course you call yourself a man." "Father, stop it! You heard him!" (Hint: Mel Gibson is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Patriot

This movie is loosely based on actual historical events in the Revolutionary War between England and her American colonies. The movie tells the story of South Carolina colonist Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), and is loosely based on the life of American General Francis Marion, who became known as "The Swamp Fox." In this scene, colonial soldier Gabriel Martin (Heath Ledger) has just asked permission of his sweetheart's father (Joey D. Vieira) to write to her (Gabriel says, "I've come to call on Anne").

The father pretends not to hear well, puts a horn to his ear and says line one. His daughter Anne (Lisa Brenner) knows her father is acting and sternly admonishes him with line two. The scene where Martin's young daughter Susan (Skye McCole Bartusiak) says, "Papa! Papa! Please don't go. I'll say anything, just tell me what you want me to say and I'll say it," is a real tear jerker.

The house lived in by Aunt Charlotte (Joely Richardson) is the same one used in the 1994 movie "Forrest Gump," only with slightly different interior paneling.
4. "What's so funny, Edwards? "Your boy Captain America over here. 'Best of the best of the best, sir. With honors.' Yeah, he's just really excited and he has no clue why we're here." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Men In Black

When Agent Dee decides to retire from Men in Black, the top-secret organization that monitors and polices alien activity on earth, the MIB force holds a selection process to find a new recruit. Agent K/Kay (Tommy Lee Jones) observes the skills of NYPD detective James Edwards (Will Smith) and nominates him.

In this scene Edwards and five other applicants are listening to Chief Zed (Rip Torn) introduce the tests they are about to take. When Edwards asks, "Maybe you already answered this, but why exactly are we here?" one of the other applicants jumps up and says, "Second Lieutenant Jake Jenson. West Point. Graduate with honors. We're here because you are looking for the best of the best of the best, sir." When Edwards laughs at this, Chief Zed asks line one. Edwards replies with line two.

In the 1998 Academy Awards, "Men in Black" won one Oscar and was nominated for two others. The special effects in this movie were impressive but that year they were up against those in "Titanic" and "The Lost World: Jurassic Park."
5. "You are a bad, bad girl, Stephanie." "I know. I need to be spanked." (Hint: Paul Giamatti is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Sideways

This entertaining movie tells the story of two friends who go on a weeklong road trip through California's wine country the week before one of them is getting married. Miles (Paul Giamatti) is an uptight high school teacher and a wannabe writer, who is very knowledgeable about wine. Jack (Thomas Haden Church) is a small-time actor who loves to flirt with just about every woman he meets.

In this scene at the tasting bar at one of the vineyards they visit, server Stephanie (Sandra Oh) pours them a full glass instead of just the small sample visitors normally are poured. Jack playfully says line one and Stephanie, without missing a beat, replies with line two.

In the 2005 Academy Awards "Sideways" won one Oscar and was nominated for four others, including Best Picture (but lost to "Million Dollar Baby"). One of the closing credits reads, "No oak trees were harmed during the filming of this movie." This is in reference to the scene at the end of the movie where Jack deliberately crashes Mile's car into an oak tree to provide an explanation for his fiancée for his facial injuries (they really came from a beating by Stephanie with her motorbike helmet, after she finds out he is getting married the following weekend.)
6. "Have you ever been liberated before?" "I got divorced twice. Does that count?" (Hint: Gene Hackman and Sean Connery are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: A Bridge Too Far

This movie uses a star-studded cast and many cameo appearances to tell the story of Operation Market Garden, an ambitious (but failed) attempt by the Allies to end World War II in Europe quickly. The plan was to use airborne paratroopers to secure three bridges behind the German lines and then link up with a ground thrust by the British 30 Corp, allowing easy access over the Rhine River into Germany.

In this scene 30 Corp has just reached Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and the local citizens have lined the road cheering the soldiers. American Colonel Robert Stout (Elliott Gould) introduces himself to British tank commander Lt. Colonel John Ormsby Evelyn "JOE" Vandeleur (Michael Caine), who asks line one. Stout replies with line two.

This movie won several awards, but no Oscars.

There were 13 Oscar-winners associated with the movie, but none earned their Academy Awards for this one (although it was very entertaining if you like war movies).
7. "You killed an elected official?" "Who elected him?" (Hint: Leonardo DiCaprio is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Gangs of New York

This movie is set in New York City, in the mid 1800s (around the time of the U.S. Civil War and Tammany Hall political corruption). In the events leading up to this scene, the young son of a gang leader disappears after his father is killed by Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), after an especially bloody clash between two gangs in the Five Points area in 1862. Years later, the grown up boy (Leonardo DiCaprio) returns to the Five Points to seek vengeance against his father's killer. In this scene Tammany Hall's "Boss" Tweed (Jim Broadbent) is dismayed to learn Bill "the Butcher" has just killed Irish-American Sheriff Walter "Monk" McGinnis (Brendan Gleeson) and says line one. Bill nonchalantly replies with line two.

In the 2003 Academy Awards, "Gangs of New York" was nominated in ten categories but did not win any Oscars.

It was nominated for Best Picture but lost to "Chicago" and Martin Scorsese was nominated for Best Director but lost to Roman Polanski (for "The Pianist"). Although the draft riots for the Union army in the U.S. Civil War depicted in the film really did happen, the real-life Bill "The Butcher" Poole (the Daniel Day-Lewis character is based on him) was actually killed several years before the riots took place.
8. "Men still do that, don't they? I'm not out of date, am I? Picking flowers for a woman as a sign of appreciation." "No, not at all, except those are poisonous." [laughs] "I'm kidding!" (Hint: Meryl Streep is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Bridges of Madison County

This movie is told in flashbacks as the children of Iowa farmer housewife, Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep), start reading her journal after her death. In the events leading up to this scene, National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood) is assigned the job of photographing an old wooden covered bridge in Iowa.

He crosses paths with Francesca, who is trapped in a not very exciting life, and they hit it off and have a four-day affair. As Robert says later in the movie, "This kind of certainty comes but once in a lifetime." In this scene Francesca has shown Robert where the bridge is located, and to show his appreciation he picks her a bunch of wildflowers.

As he hands her the bouquet he says line one. She straight faced replies with the first part of line two and then laughs and adds, "I'm kidding!" In the 1996 Academy Awards, Meryl Streep was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role but lost the Oscar to Susan Sarandon in "Dead Man Walking." If you think Meryl Streep looks plumper than usual in this movie, you are correct.

She put on 15-20 pounds of weight for her role as Francesca Johnson.
9. "I'm talking about millions in Kuwaiti bullion." "You mean them little cubes you put in hot water to make soup?" (Hint: George Clooney is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Three Kings

In the events leading up to this scene the Persian Gulf War has just ended and Allied troops are disarming captured Iraqi troops. A map is retrieved from one Iraqi soldier and is thought to possibly show where goods looted from Kuwait are hidden. In this scene a group of American soldiers are discussing what to do with the map and Major Archie Gates (George Clooney) says line one. Not-too-bright Pfc. Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze) contributes line two.

The soldiers hope to find Kuwaiti gold bullion and keep it for themselves, but they find themselves being more concerned about protecting oppressed civilians.

This movie won five awards but no Oscars. In the scene where Sergeant First Class Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg) is tortured with electric shocks, he is shocked for real.

He said he wanted to get into his role.
10. "Why do you think he removes their skins, Agent Starling? Thrill me with your acumen." "It excites him. Most serial killers keep some sort of trophies from their victims." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Silence of the Lambs

The American Film Institute (AFI) recently named psychiatrist-turned-cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter (played wonderfully in this movie by Anthony Hopkins) as the No. 1 greatest film villain, and after watching this movie it is not hard to see why. In this scene FBI agent-in-training, Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), is interviewing Dr. Lecter in his Baltimore jail cell.

Her boss hopes she can gain some insight into the thinking of a psychopath that will help the FBI catch a killer currently on the loose. Dr. Lecter asks Clarice line one and she replies with line two.

When he says, "I didn't," Clarice replies "No. No, you ate yours." In the 1992 Academy Awards "The Silence of the Lambs" won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Anthony Hopkins for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Jodie Foster for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

The moth cocoon found during autopsy in the throat of one of the victims of psychopath Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) was made from a combination of Tootsie Roll candy and gummy bears, so it would be edible if she accidentally swallowed it. Among the actors considered to play Dr. Lecter were Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Jeremy Irons, John Hurt, Robert Duvall, Christopher Lloyd, Patrick Stewart and Louis Gossett, Jr.
