Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Everybody calls him that." "Not to his face, they don't." (Hint: Warren Beatty is in this 1991 movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Bugsy

In this scene a cab driver points out the home of Bugsy Siegel (Warren Beatty) to fellow gangster Harry Greenberg (Elliott Gould). When Greenberg says, "He doesn't like that name" the cab driver says the first line. Greenberg replies with the second. "Bugsy" tells the mostly true story of part of gangster Bugsy Siegel's career, although it differs from actual history on how the Flamingo hotel in Las Vegas was built.

The movie shows him as a visionary, starting this project. In actuality, he muscled his way into a partially completed project (started by L.A. nightclub owner Billy Wilkerson). Benjamin Siegel got the nickname "Bugsy" from fellow gangsters because of his notoriously quick temper and the fact that many considered him as "crazy as a bedbug." In the 1992 Academy Awards, "Bugsy" won two Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture, but lost to "The Silence of the Lambs."
2. "Don't do this to me, it's humiliating." "For seventy grand, Herb, you can afford to be humiliated." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Quiz Show

In this scene quiz show contestant Herb Stempel (John Turturro) learns from NBC television executive Dan Enright (David Paymer) that his reign is over after winning $70,000 and he must fake losing to Charles Van Doren (Ralph Fiennes). To make matters worse, it's a question Stempel actually knows (Best Picture in the 1956 Academy Awards). Stempel says the first line and the producer replies with the second.

In the 1995 Academy Awards, "Quiz Show" was nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, but didn't win any. Best Picture that year went to "Forrest Gump." This movie is based on a true story involving the show "Twenty One" on NBC television in the late 1950s.

This incident had a chilling effect on television game shows for many years.
3. "I like the way you put things together, Omlet. You're alright with me." "Ahmet." (Hint: Jamie Foxx is in this 2004 movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Ray

In this scene musician Ray Charles (Jamie Foxx) learns from recording executive Ahmet Ertegun (Curtis Armstrong) that Atlantic Records has just purchased his recording contract from Swingtime and that he will be getting royalties of five cents per record.

He misunderstands Ahmet's name and says the first line. Ahmet corrects him with the second. When Ray asks " What kind of a name is that, anyway?" Ahmet explains it's Turkish. It wasn't till I started researching this movie that I realized Ahmet is played by the same actor that played Miles in "Risky Business" and 'Booger' in "Revenge of the Nerds." In the 2005 Academy Awards, "Ray" won two Oscars, including Jamie Foxx for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.

It was also nominated for Best Picture but lost to "Million Dollar Baby."
4. "How did he do that?" "My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Godfather

This scene takes place during the wedding of Godfather Vito Corleone's daughter, Connie (Talia Shire), to gangster Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo). In this scene Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) is talking to his girlfriend, Kay Adams (Diane Keaton) at the reception and tells her the story about how his father (Marlon Brando) got wedding singer Johnny Fontane (Al Martino) excused from his personal services contract. Kay asks the question in line one and Michael answers in line two.

Then he adds this explanation, "Luca Brasi held a gun to his head and my father assured him that either his brains or his signature would be on the contract. That's a true story. That's my family, Kay, it's not me." "The Godfather" won three Oscars in the 1973 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Marlon Brando for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Al Pacino, James Caan, and Robert Duvall were all nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, but didn't win. "The Godfather" follows the lives of a fictional American crime family, but many of the characters and incidents in this fictional story are loosely based on people and incidents in real life.

The cat held by Marlon Brando in the opening scene of "The Godfather" is a stray the actor found while on the lot at Paramount, and was not originally called for in the script.
5. "Beg your pardon sire, but won't we hit our own troops?" "Yes... but we'll hit theirs as well. We have reserves." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Braveheart

In this scene troops lead by English King Edward I, a.k.a. Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan) are engaging in a big battle with Scottish troops lead by William Wallace (Mel Gibson). After English troops are on the battlefield with the Scottish troops, Longshanks orders his archers to fire. One of his commanders is puzzled by this order and asks the question in line one. Longshanks replies with line two. "Braveheart" tells the mostly true story of William Wallace, a commoner (although one source says he was a Scottish lord) who unites 13th-century Scotland in its battle to overthrow English rule (although documentation about the details is sketchy, at best).

Despite Longshanks portrayal in "Braveheart" as an evil villain, he actually had the best interests of his people at heart and encouraged Parliamentary institutions to replace more feudal systems (although he was ruthlessly ambitious).

In the 1996 Academy Awards "Braveheart" won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Mel Gibson for Best Director.
6. "Listen to me." "No, no! You listen to ME!" (Hint: Tom Cruise is in this 1983 movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Risky Business

In the events leading up to this scene Chicago teenager Joel Goodson (Tom Cruise) has turned his home into a brothel while his parents are on vacation. As call girl Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) suggests, "If we could get our friends together, we'd make a fortune." Lana's former pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) thinks Joel has stolen Lana from him and cleans out Joel's house of all furniture in retaliation. Joel wants to get it back before his parents return from vacation.

In the power play by telephone in this scene, Guido says the first line and Joel replies with the second. "Risky Business" was the movie that made Tom Cruise a big star.
7. "You're not a cook." "Yeah, well... I also cook." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Under Siege

In the events leading up to this scene, the battleship USS Missouri is about to be decommissioned and the ship's crew is about to celebrate the birthday of Captain Adams (Patrick O'Neal). They've hired a band led by William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) to be brought aboard, along with former Playboy playmate Jordan Tate (Erika Eleniak), who is to jump out of a cake and dance.

However, Strannix is really a terrorist who plans to take over the ship and then sell the Tomahawk missiles on board. After the takeover starts Tate meets ship cook Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal), who is a former Navy SEAL.

She asks, "So who are you? Are you, like, some special forces guy or something?" Ryback replies, "Nah. I'm just a cook." In this scene Tate watches Ryback complete a radio communication to command headquarters in Hawaii via satellite using a small, portable dish antenna.

After watching him Tate says the first line and Ryback replies with the second. In the 1993 Academy Awards "Under Siege" was nominated for two awards but didn't win either.

This first-rate thriller is one of my favorites.
8. "Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake." "I don't know what you mean, Miss Ilsa." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Casablanca

In this scene Ilsa Laszlo (Ingrid Bergman) is in Rick's Cafe Americain nightclub, in Casablanca, and asks the piano player Sam (Dooley Wilson) with the first line to play a song that has a special meaning for her and Rick (Humphrey Bogart). Sam pretends to not know what she is talking about and replies with the second line. Rick rushes up and says, "Sam, I thought I told you never to play..." but then sees Ilsa and stops mid sentence.

She had failed to keep a rendezvous with him years before in Paris. "Casablanca" won three Oscars in the 1944 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Humphrey Bogart was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role but didn't win the Oscar.
9. "There's no smoking in this building." "What are you gonna do? Charge me with smoking? (Hint: Sharon Stone is in this 1992 movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Basic Instinct

In the events leading up to this scene, San Francisco nightclub owner Johnny Boz is found brutally murdered with an ice pick. Prime suspect, sultry novel writer Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), is brought in to the police station for questioning by Detective Nick Curran (Michael Douglas) and John Correli (Wayne Knight).

When Tramell starts to light a cigarette, Correli says the first line and Tramell replies with the second. In the 1993 Academy Awards, "Basic Instinct" was nominated for two awards but didn't win either.

The role of Catherine Tramell was turned down by Kim Basinger, Emma Thompson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Greta Scacchi, Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan.
10. "Paulie, it's Thanksgiving. I got a turkey in the oven." "Oh... a turkey in the oven." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Rocky

In this scene, meat plant employee Paulie (Burt Young) is having a heated discussion with his almost 30-year-old, unmarried sister Adrian (Talia Shire) at the home they share together. He wants to get her out of the house socially or, he thinks, "if she don't wise up, she's gonna die an old maid." When she says the first line, he replies with the second.

Then he takes the turkey out of the oven, throws it in the alley and says, "You want the bird? Go in the alley and eat the bird." In the 1977 Academy Awards, "Rocky" won three Oscars, including Best Picture. Sylvester Stallone, Burt Young, Burgess Meredith, and Talia Shire were all nominated for awards but didn't win. Sylvester Stallone wrote the script for "Rocky" in just three days after he saw a match between boxing great Muhammad Ali and an unknown club fighter named Chuck Wepner in which Wepner went the distance. "Rocky" tells the story of Rocky Balboa, a Philadelphia club boxer who gets a chance to fight for the heavyweight title of the world.

The theme song "Gonna Fly Now" played by Bill Conti was a big hit in the late 1970s and is still frequently heard at sporting events.
