Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Man! That's tasty!" "That's 100% pinot noir. Single vineyard. They don't even make it any more." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Sideways

This movie tells the story of Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church), who set off on a weeklong road trip through California's wine country. Miles is a depressed, divorced, high school English teacher who is very knowledgeable about wine, and Jack is a small-time actor who apparently has never met a woman he didn't like.

The friends they meet, the situations they get into and their discussions of relationships make this a very entertaining movie. In this scene Jack has just opened a bottle of Champagne in the car at the start of their trip and says line one. Miles responds with line two.

In the 2005 Academy Awards "Sideways" won one Oscar and was nominated for four others, including Best Picture (but lost out to "Million Dollar Baby"). Paul Giamatti's father is former Commissioner of Major League Baseball Bart Giamatti.
2. "You're gonna fit right in. Everyone in here is innocent, you know that? Heywood, what you in here for?" "Didn't do it." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

In the events leading up to this scene, young banker Andrew Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of the murder of his wife and is sent to Shawshank Prison (but is later seen to be innocent). In this scene, when Andy first arrives at the prison, he approaches a group of prisoners and introduces himself to Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman). Red recognizes his name and calls him the "wife-killin' banker." Andy protests that he didn't do it and Red responds with line one. Prisoner Heywood (William Sadler) confirms Red's evaluation with line two.

In the 1995 Academy Awards, "The Shawshank Redemption" was nominated in seven categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "Forrest Gump"). Although this movie was just a modest financial success in theaters, it became one of the most popular video rentals of all time.

This movie was adapted from Stephen King's short story titled "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption."
3. "And the answer to your question is, yes - if you fight for me, you get to kill the English." "Excellent!" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Braveheart

In the events leading up to this scene, William Wallace (Mel Gibson) attempts to unite all the individual fighting groups in 13th-century Scotland into one big army in its battle to overthrow English rule. In this scene, Wallace is trying to persuade Irish fighter Stephen (David O'Hara) to join his army and answers his question with line one. Stephen is satisfied with his answer and replies with line two.

This movie tells the mostly true story of Wallace (although documentation about the details is sketchy, at best).

In the 1996 Academy Awards "Braveheart" won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Mel Gibson for Best Director and was nominated for five more. One significant deviation from history is that the Battle of Stirling Bridge was shown in the movie as being fought on an open plain.

In actuality, a narrow bridge separated the English and Scottish forces. The Scottish waited to attack until the English were only partially across, and the bridge was too narrow for the rest of the English to rapidly cross once the fighting started.

When asked by a local why the battle was filmed on an open plain, Mel Gibson answered, "The bridge got in the way." "Aye," the local responded, "That's what the English found."
4. "Well, the DA defines murder as one human killing another, so, technically, you can't commit murder, can you?" "Does this make us friends?" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: I, Robot

In the events leading up to this scene (set on future Earth in 2035), the body of renowned robotic scientist Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell) has been found in the lobby of the U.S. Robotics building in Chicago and he is thought to have committed suicide.

But Detective Del Spooner (Will Smith) suspects it may be murder, not suicide, and begins to investigate the situation. A robot with special talents named Sonny (Alan Tudyk) emerges as a prime suspect and Det. Spooner enlists the aid of psychologist Dr. Susan Calvin (Bridget Moynahan), who specializes in the psyches of robots, to help him understand how the Three Laws of Robotics could have been violated.

In this scene Sonny confesses to the murder but says Dr. Lanning made him promise to do it.

When Sonny asks, "Are you going to arrest me, Detective?" Spooner replies with line one. Sonny then replies with line two. In the 2005 Academy Awards "I, Robot" was nominated for the Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects but lost to "Spider-Man 2." The scene where Sonny is hiding in a large group of NS-5 robots standing at attention came from the Isaac Asimov story "Little Lost Robot." Asimov is considered a master of the science-fiction genre and has written or edited more than five hundred science-fiction books.

The Three Laws of Robotics are his creation.
5. "I just wanted to tell you I'm your number one fan." "That's... very sweet of you." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Misery

In the events leading up to this scene, romance novel writer Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is rescued from an automobile crash by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), a somewhat unstable nurse who calls herself the "number one fan" of Paul's heroine Misery Chastaine.

In Annie's secluded house, Paul finds himself drugged, crippled and at her mercy. He finally manages to kill her and escape. In this scene, Paul is having lunch at a restaurant with his agent Marcia Sindell (Lauren Bacall) after his escape and the waitress approaches their table with the dessert trolley.

When she pulls out a large knife ready to slice whatever dessert they select, Paul momentarily flashes back to picture Annie holding a knife. When the waitress says line one, Paul snaps back to reality and replies meekly with line two (the last line in the movie).

In the 1991 Academy Awards Kathy Bates won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role. This movie was adapted from Stephen King's novel "Misery." In the book, to prevent Paul from escaping Annie cuts off his foot, but in the movie that was changed to her breaking both his ankles with a sledgehammer. Ouch!
6. "Of course when they bring the maple syrup after the pancakes, it'll definitely be too late." "How is that gonna be too late? We haven't ordered the pancakes yet." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Rain Man

After the death of his father, materialistic car salesman Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns he has an autistic brother Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is in an institutional home in Cincinnati. When he learns his father left a $3 million trust fund to Raymond, he attempts to get to know Ray better. Charlie picks up Ray and starts driving them to Charlie's home in Los Angeles (Ray is afraid of flying).

In this scene, the two them are eating breakfast in a restaurant. Ray says the first line and Charlie recalls that Doctor Bruner (at Ray's institution) had explained that people afflicted with autistism are overly dependent on routine.

He replies with line two. In the 1989 Academy Awards, "Rain Man" won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Dustin Hoffman for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

In the scene at the pancake diner, the boy at the counter is Dustin Hoffman's son Jake.
7. "Can we open up the window, professor? It's hot in here." "Your comfort comes second to my ability to hear my own voice." (Hint: Russell Crowe is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: A Beautiful Mind

This movie tells the true story of brilliant math prodigy John Nash, Jr. (Russell Crowe) and how he overcame years of suffering from schizophrenia to win a Nobel Prize. In this scene at his job teaching a college class at MIT, he has shut the classroom windows to cut down on the noise from a construction crew just outside his building.

It's a hot day and one of his students asks line one. Nash replies with line two. My favorite line from this movie is from his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, when he looks at his wife Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) in the audience and says, "You are the reason I am. You are all my reasons." In the 2002 Academy Awards "A Beautiful Mind" won four Oscars, including Best Picture. Jennifer Connelly won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Ron Howard won an Oscar for Best Director. Russell Crowe was nominated for Best Actor (but lost to Denzel Washington in "Training Day"). Strictly speaking, there is no Nobel Prize in mathematics.

The prize Nash won was in economics (although that category was not created in Alfred Nobel's will and was added in 1969).
8. "I want to say one word to you. Just one word." "Yes, sir." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Graduate

In the events leading up to this scene, Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) has just graduated from college and his proud parents are hosting a cocktail party to show him off to their friends. However, Benjamin really isn't sure what he wants to do with his life. In this scene at the party, one of the guests (Walter Brooke) says line one to Benjamin and he replies with line two with a very serious look. The one word the guest says ("Plastics") is one of the famous lines from this movie. In the 1968 Academy Awards "The Graduate" won one Oscar (Best Director for Mike Nichols) and was nominated for six others, including Best Picture (but lost to "In the Heat of the Night"). Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross were nominated for awards but didn't win.

The famous promotional poster for this movie shows Dustin Hoffman in the background framed by Mrs. Robinson's shapely leg. However, the leg in that photo belonged to model Linda Gray, not actress Anne Bancroft. Baseball player Joe DiMaggio was an extremely private man and at first was upset with the lines "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" and "Joltin' Joe has left and gone away" (from the title song "Mrs. Robinson" by Simon and Garfunkel).
9. "You're a real live outlaw, aren't ya?" "Well, I may be an outlaw darlin', but you're the one stealing my heart." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Thelma and Louise

This movie tells the story of two best friends who decide to break out of their normal boring lives by taking a road trip. At a country and western dance club Louise (Susan Sarandon) shoots and kills a man attempting to rape her friend Thelma (Geena Davis).

Instead of going to the police immediately (and probably being charged with justifiable homicide) they decide to run, and things escalate from there. Along the way they pick up hitchhiker J.D. (Brad Pitt), who tells them he is a student studying "human nature," but who is really a petty criminal.

In this scene in Thelma's motel room, J.D. confesses to Thelma he is really a robber (he looks down on being a mere burglar). An incredulous Thelma says line one, and sweet talking J.D. replies with line two.

In the 1992 Academy Awards "Thelma and Louise" won an Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon and director Ridley Scott were also nominated for awards but didn't win. This was the movie that turned Brad Pitt into a big star.

A casting decision that almost happened: Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep wanted to make a movie together and "Thelma and Louise" was one of the scripts they considered. Ultimately, they decided to star in the 1992 movie "Death Becomes Her" instead.
10. "I wonder how such a degenerated person ever reached a position of authority in the Army Medical Corps." "He was drafted." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: MASH

This hit comedy tells the story of the 4077 M.A.S.H. unit (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) during the Korean War and chief surgeons Capt. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Donald Sutherland) and Capt. John Francis "Trapper John" McIntyre (Elliott Gould). Hawkeye and Trapper John are crack surgeons but lousy soldiers.

In this scene, by-the-book head nurse Maj. Margaret "Hot Lips" O'Houlihan (Sally Kellerman) gets some opinions on nurses' physical attributes, drinking and bedtime arrangements. After Hawkeye leaves, she asks line one and the resident religious officer Father Mulcahy (Rene Auberjonois) replies with line two.

In the 1971 Academy Awards, formerly blacklisted writer Ring Lardner, Jr. won the Oscar for Best Screenplay. This signified a significant shift in Hollywood politics since Lardner, Jr. had refused to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) during the Senator Joseph McCarthy era and was fined and jailed.

He was not the first blacklisted writer to subsequently write a screenplay under his own name, but he was the first (after the blacklist) to be voted an Oscar winner by his peers. "MASH" was also nominated for four other Academy Awards, including Best Picture (but lost to "Patton").

This movie inspired the hugely successful American TV series M*A*S*H, which ran for 11 seasons. Its final episode was watched by a record 125 million viewers, which was the largest audience ever to watch a single television show.
