Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "It's an antique. They don't make 'em like this any more. Sturdy, heavy, dull. I'm gonna want some gas fer this." "Oh, thank God. I thought you weren't gonna use any." (Hint: Rick Moranis and Steve Martin are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Little Shop of Horrors

Despite the title, this is a comedy. In this scene, nerdish flower shop employee Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) is nervous in the dentist chair of sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello (Steve Martin). When he observes apprehensively that the drill looks rusty, Dr. Scrivello comments with line one.

When a relieved Seymour says line two, Dr. Scrivello says, "Oh, the gas isn't for you Seymour, it's for me. You see, I wanna really enjoy this." The scenes between the doctor and masochist patient Arthur Denton (Bill Murray) are hilarious ("I definitely need a long, slow root canal.").

In the 1987 Academy Awards "Little Shop of Horrors" was nominated for two awards, including Best Special Effects, but didn't win either. The voice of the man-eating plant Audrey II ("Feed me, Seymour!") was provided by Levi Stubbs, the bass singer for Motown singing group The Four Tops.

This movie was based on an off-Broadway musical, which in turn was based on a 1960 low-budget film.
2. "It seemed like a good idea at the time." "Mr. Verger, you indicated that you've received some kind of new information." (Hint: Ray Liotta and Anthony Hopkins are in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Hannibal

This movie was the first sequel to the 1991 hit "The Silence of the Lambs." In this scene rich Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) is explaining his horrible face disfigurement to FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore). Verger had gone to see psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (played wonderfully again by Anthony Hopkins) and while high on drugs was persuaded by Dr. Lecter to scrape off his face flesh with a piece of broken glass and feed it to dogs! Verger says line one and Clarice coolly replies with line two. Verger's attempt at revenge is chilling. I'm not real fond of heights and the scene where Dr. Lecter throws Italian Inspector Renaldo Pazzi (Giancarlo Giannini) off a balcony (starting with the cheerful line, "Here we go!") was pretty hard for me to take! This movie won several awards but no Oscars.

The scenes of the luxurious mansion where Mason Verger lived were filmed at the Vanderbilt mansion (the Biltmore estate) in Asheville, North Carolina.
3. "Got that boys? Now he's got his wife doing his fightin' for him." "Yeah. Ain't she something?" (Hint: Russell Crowe is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Cinderella Man

In the events leading up to this scene boxing promoter Jimmy Johnston (Bruce McGill) gives a restaurant meal to boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), his wife Mae (Renée Zellweger), and manager Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti). He knows current heavyweight boxing champion Max Baer (Craig Bierko) and some press photographers will be present and hopes for some prefight publicity for an upcoming match between them.

When Baer says to Mae, "You are far too pretty to be a widow." and then adds "On second thought, maybe I can comfort you after he's gone." Mae throws her drink in Max's face. Baer then says line one to the photographers and Braddock replies with line two.

This movie tells the true story of a Depression-era boxer who is supposedly washed up but who goes on to become the world heavyweight champion.

In the 2006 Academy Awards "Cinderella Man" was nominated for three Oscars but didn't win any. Paul Giamatti was nominated for Best Supporting Actor but lost to George Clooney in "Syriana." Russell Crowe suffered numerous injuries in filming the boxing sequences in this movie. During training he dislocated his shoulder. Professional boxers played Braddock's opponents during these scenes. Even though they were instructed to avoid hitting his face, sometimes they couldn't pull back in time and ended up injuring Crowe.

He wound up suffering from several concussions and cracked teeth.
4. "Excuse me, what did you say?" "Magua said he understands the English very well." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Last of the Mohicans

This movie is set during The French and Indian War in 18th century North America. In the events leading up to this scene, Huron Indian scout Magua (Wes Studi) is leading a column of British soldiers, British Colonel Munro's two daughters, and frontiersman Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) to Colonel Munro at Fort William Henry (Magua calls him "Grey Hair").

In this scene British Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington) instructs Magua by saying, "You there, scout. We must rest soon, the women are tired." Magua wants to stop further ahead where the water is better but he is overruled by Major Heyward.

When a displeased Magua mutters in the Huron language (with subtitles), "Magua understands that the white man is a dog to his women. When they are tired, he puts down his tomahawk to feed their laziness." Major Heyward says line one. Magua replies, this time in English, with line two.

In the 1993 Academy Awards "The Last of the Mohicans" won the Oscar for Best Sound. The opening credits of this movie, superimposed on the Adirondack Mountains in NY, with the great theme music, is spectacular on a wide screen.
5. "Mr. Hallorann, what's in room 237?" "Nothin'. There ain't nothin' in room 237. But you ain't got no business goin' in there anyway. So stay out. You understand? Stay out." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Shining

In this scene young Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd) asks head chef Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado about a particular hotel room with line one. But Hallorann has sensed that Danny has special talents in mental telepathy (what his grandmother used to call "shining") and realizes Danny could have real problems in that room as a result of a past event in the hotel.

He warns Danny with line two to stay away from that room. When Danny asks, "Mr. Hallorann, are you scared of this place?" he replies, "No. Scared - there's nothin' here.

It's just that, you know, some places are like people. Some shine and some don't. I guess you could say the Overlook Hotel here has somethin' almost like shining." In the events leading up to this scene, would-be writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is hired as the winter caretaker of the isolated hotel in the secluded mountains of Colorado and moves his family there.

As the winter progresses, delusional Jack goes stir crazy and is convinced he is an earlier caretaker who went berserk and killed his family.

The ominous music at the opening scenes definitely gives the impression that something bad is about to happen! In a famous scene from this movie, Jack Torrance chops through a locked bathroom door to get at his terrified wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall). Jack Nicholson improvised the line "Heerreee's Johnny!" in this scene. This movie is based on an early Stephen King novel and is one of my favorites.
6. "Sport [a nickname], truth, like art, is in the eye of the beholder. You believe what you choose and I'll believe what I know." "Good luck, Jim." (Hint: Kevin Spacey is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

This movie is based on a true story. In the events leading up to this scene, journalist John Kelso (John Cusack) travels to Savannah, Georgia, to write a feature article about the impressive Christmas party thrown each year by art and antiques collector Jim Williams (Kevin Spacey).

After the party is over and just before Kelso heads home, Jim Williams shoots and kills his homosexual lover, Billy Carl Hanson (Jude Law), but claims it was self-defense. Kelso decides to stay for the trial, hoping there is a story in it he can write a book about. During the trial, Williams changes his story for his defense lawyer and is eventually found not guilty in a jury trial.

In this scene (at the end of the movie) Kelso asks Williams what really happened. Williams (who calls Kelso "Sport") replies with line one, and Kelso, realizing he'll probably never know what really happened, replies with line two.

This movie won one award but no Oscars. The luxurious mansion where Williams lived is Mercer House, which was originally built for the great-grandfather of Johnny Mercer (perhaps best known for writing the lyrics for the Academy Award-winning song "Moon River.")
7. "We don't care about money here." "Well, that's because you have it." (Hint: Leonardo DiCaprio is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Aviator

In this scene Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio) is having lunch with the family of his current girlfriend, actress Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett), at their Connecticut estate. Her mother (Frances Conroy) haughtily says, "We're all socialists here." and "I will not have you sniggering at Mr. Roosevelt." She then says line one and Howard immediately comes back with line two.

This movie is an entertaining biopic about the life of the brilliant but eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. It follows his career from movie producer to airplane designer to major player in TWA Airlines into germophobic mental illness.

In the 2005 Academy Awards "The Aviator" won five Oscars and was nominated for six more, including Best Picture (but lost to "Million Dollar Baby").

In preparation for her role as Katharine Hepburn, Cate Blanchett did daily voice exercises to help her accurately reproduce Hepburn's distinctive upper class New England accent. She also learned to play tennis and golf and took cold showers, something Hepburn was known for.

The beginning of Howard Hughes' huge fortune was inherited from his father, a noted designer of oil drilling bits from Houston, Texas.
8. "Mr. Hammond, after careful consideration, I've decided NOT to endorse your park." "So have I." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Jurassic Park

In this scene paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) are preparing to join several others hurriedly leaving Jurassic Park, after narrowly escaping with their lives. Hammond has learned how to extract DNA from the blood of prehistoric mosquitoes entombed in clumps of ancient amber and has successfully cloned dinosaurs from that.

His plan was to create a park and exhibit these creatures behind electrified fences to paying tourists. However, when several scientists are brought in to possibly endorse this park, several dinosaurs escape and the resulting scenes of T-rex and velociraptors vs. people are pretty unnerving.

In the 1994 Academy Awards "Jurassic Park" won three Oscars, including Best Visual Effects. Both the book by Michael Crichton and this movie based on it generated considerable interest in dinosaurs and resulted in a record increase in the number of students studying paleontology.
9. "Hey, Ryan, be careful what you shoot at. Most things in here don't react too well to bullets." "Right. *I* have to be careful what *I* shoot at?" (Hint: Alec Baldwin is in this movie.) Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Hunt for Red October

In this scene, Russian submarine captain Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) has successfully defected and has surrendered his technologically advanced submarine, Red October, to American commander Bart Mancuso (Scott Glenn). One of the Russian crewmembers does not react kindly to this defection and starts firing a gun at Ramius and American CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) in the missile room of Red October. Ramius is hit, gives his gun to Ryan and says line one to him.

A sarcastic Ryan replies with line two.

This was the first of several Tom Clancy novels involving the character Jack Ryan to be made into movies. In the 1991 Academy Awards "The Hunt for Red October" won one Oscar and was nominated but did not win in two more categories. Baldwin was the first actor to play the character of Jack Ryan in movies made from Tom Clancy stories.

The next two were Harrison Ford in "Patriot Games" (1992), Harrison Ford again in "Clear and Present Danger" (1994) and Ben Affleck in "The Sum of All Fears" (2002).
10. "That boy is a P-I-G pig." "See if you can guess...what I am now." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Animal House

In this scene John "Bluto" Blutarsky (John Belushi) joins five other students at a booth in the Faber College cafeteria and proceeds to shovel food into his mouth. After watching this a disgusted Barbara "Babs" Jansen (Martha Smith) remarks with line one. Bluto then asks line two and stuffs more food into his mouth until his cheeks bulge like a squirrel's.

When everybody seems puzzled, he hits his cheeks, spraying them with food and says, "I'm a zit. Get it?" "Animal House" won a 1979 People's Choice award but no Oscars.

The screenplay for this movie was co-written by Doug Kenny, Harold Ramis and Chris Miller. Kenny played Stork in the movie ("What should we do, you moron?") and was a co-founder of the humor magazine "National Lampoon". Co-writer Chris Miller's own fraternity experiences were the basis of several published stories starting in 1974, and these were turned into the movie. Ramis later went on to be a co-writer for the movies "Meatballs," "Caddyshack," "Stripes" and "Ghost Busters."
