Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Your name is John Coffey?" "Yes sir, boss. Like the drink, only not spelled the same." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Green Mile

In this scene, Depression-era death row prison guard, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), takes custody of huge prisoner John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), who is accused of murdering two little girls (he is later seen by the guards to be innocent). Edgecomb asks the first line as he checks his clipboard, after he and several other guards escort Coffey to his new cell, and Coffey responds with line two. Coffey's magical powers then lead to some amazing events.

In the 1995 Academy Awards, "The Green Mile" was nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, but didn't win any. Best Picture that year went to "American Beauty." The scene showing Coffey watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing (in the 1935 movie "Top Hat") to the song "Cheek to Cheek" and the line "I'm in Heaven..." is a real tearjerker.

This movie is based on a Stephen King novel.
2. "I think I know what "If you build it, he will come" means." "Ooh... why do I not think this is such a good thing?" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Field of Dreams

In the events leading up to this scene, Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hears a voice in his cornfield telling him, "If you build it, he will come." At first he is puzzled by what this means, but in this scene he thinks he realizes the answer and says the first line to his wife Annie (Amy Madigan).

She replies with line two. SPOILER ALERT Ray at first interprets this message as an instruction to build a baseball field on his farm so the ghosts of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the seven other Chicago White Sox players banned from the game for throwing the 1919 World Series (known as the Chicago Black Sox) will appear.

He later realizes the "he" in the message refers to his dead father who he never knew very well. In the 1990 Academy Awards, "Field of Dreams" was nominated in three categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "Driving Miss Daisy").

In the scene shot in Boston's Fenway Park, the thousands of extras in the stands include then unknowns Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. They are unaccredited in the cast listing.
3. "That's a lie! Harry Bailey went to war. He got the Congressional Medal of Honor. He saved the lives of every man on that transport." "Every man on that transport died. Harry wasn't there to save them, because you weren't there to save Harry." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: It's a Wonderful Life

In the events leading up to this scene, Uncle Billy (Thomas Mitchell) misplaces a bank deposit for the savings and loan company owned by George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) and can't find it. George realizes the Bank Examiner will blame him and that his small SandL will fail. Thinking his wife and their children will be better off with him dead, he contemplates suicide. An angel named Clarence, trying to earn his wings (Henry Travers), is sent to Earth to try and dissuade George from doing this.

In this scene, Clarence shows George the town cemetery and George spots a headstone for his brother Harry (Todd Karns), whom he had saved as a youngster, after he broke through some ice. An indignant George says line one and Clarence explains why the headstone is there with line two.

As Clarence says, "Remember, George, no man is a failure who has friends." In the 1947 Academy Awards, "It's a Wonderful Life " was nominated in five categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Best Years of Our Lives"). Jimmy Stewart was reluctant to take the role of George, feeling that he was not up to it so soon after World War II (he flew 20 combat missions as a bomber pilot during the war).
4. "Tonya, can you play the balalaika?" "Can she play? She's an artist!" Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Doctor Zhivago

In the events leading up to this scene, young Dr. Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) meets and falls in love with nurse Lara Antipova (Julie Christie), loses track of her and then finds her again. Much of this movie is set during the Russian Revolution and against the vastness of the Russian landscape.

In this scene (the last scene in the movie), Yuri's half brother, General Yevgraf Zhivago (Alec Guinness), has tracked down a young woman he thinks might be the daughter of Yuri and Lara and talks to her. As she leaves with her boyfriend (Mark Eden) he notices she is carrying a balalaika (a Russian stringed instrument and one of Yuri's favorites).

He shouts line one after her, as they leave and her boyfriend shouts back line two. General Zhivago responds with the last line in the movie, "Ah, then it's a gift." In the 1966 Academy Awards "Doctor Zhivago" won five Oscars and was nominated for five more, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Sound of Music").

This is one of those epic movies by director David Lean that needs to be seen on a wide screen to be fully appreciated.
5. "What do you mean, twenty feet short?" "You're twenty feet short of the woods. The hole is right here in open. The guard is between us and the lights." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Great Escape

In the events leading up to this scene, Allied prisoners considered especially escape prone are being held in a special high-security "escape-proof" German POW (Prisoner Of War) camp, during World War II. Even though they are being watched closely, a mass escape through one of three tunnels dug from the camp to the nearby woods is being plotted by Squadron Leader Roger "Big X" Bartlett (Richard Attenborough) and a few other leaders.

In this scene, the night of escape is reached and the tunnel far end is dug upwards to break the soil. Capt. Hilts "The Cooler King" (Steve McQueen) is first to stick his head out of the exit and is dismayed to see the tunnel is too short.

He reports back to Bartlett, who then responds with line one. Hilts then clarifies the situation with line two.

This movie is based on an actual escape of 76 POWs from Stalag Luft III prison camp near Munich, Germany. But while individual incidents in the film are mostly true, they were rearranged as to both the timing and the people involved.

Historical note: Although most of the 76 escapees were eventually captured or killed, the escape did have the desired effect of diverting considerable German resources in tracking down the escapees and increasing the number of camp guards.
6. "Fraulein, were you this much trouble at the Abbey?" "Oh, much more, sir." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: The Sound of Music

In the events leading up to this scene, nun-in-training Maria (Julie Andrews) does not fit in very well in the Abbey in Salzburg, Austria and the Mother Abbess (Peggy Wood) suggests, "There is a family near Salzburg that needs a governess until September." The family she is referring to is headed by widowed naval captain Georg von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) who has seven children.

When Maria first visits his home he explains how he uses different short-and-long blasts on a whistle to call his children, and assigns a code to her.

She protests with the line, "Oh, no, sir, I'm sorry, sir. I could never answer to a whistle. Whistles are for dogs and cats and other animals, but not for children and definitely not for me." He then says line one and she responds with line two.

She later organizes his seven children into an award-winning singing group. In the 1966 Academy Awards "The Sound of Music" won five Oscars, including Best Picture. Julie Andrews was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Maria (but did not win).

This movie is based on a true story. The real Maria von Trapp has a cameo appearance in this movie (she can be seen walking in the square when Julie Andrews sings the song "I Have Confidence"). Maria died in Vermont, USA in 1987 at the age of 82. Historical note: After the Nazis took over Austria in World War II, the family home became the headquarters of Heinrich Himmler.
7. "Stop! L.A.P.D! Get out of the car!" "Hey man, this is MY car. I OWN this car. It's NOT stolen." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Speed

In the events leading up to this scene, disgruntled explosives expert Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) attempts to collect the disability settlement he thinks he is due by booby trapping a high-rise elevator and demanding a ransom. However, the L.A.P.D. SWAT team, which includes Officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) and Detective Harry Temple (Jeff Daniels), is able to save all the passengers and prevent Payne's plan.

He then sabotages a city bus so that it will explode if its speed drops below 50 mph, or if any passengers are removed.

In this scene Traven is attempting to commandeer a car so he can speed after the bus and warn it. He shows his badge and shouts line one to cars on the freeway. The black driver of a Jaguar convertible, who initially thinks he is being stopped on suspicion of car robbery, shouts back line two. Traven then pulls out his gun and says, "It is now. Move over." In the 1995 Academy Awards "Speed" won two Oscars and was nominated for a third. Thirteen buses were used in filming the bus scenes, including one with special hydraulic suspension to allow cornering at high speeds, one with a camera platform on the front to allow filming the driver's face, and two that were blown up.

The highway scenes were filmed on a California freeway that had just been completed but had not yet been opened to the public.
8. "Don't ever do nothin' like this again. Don't come back up here." "You don't have to worry about that, Sheriff." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Deliverance

In the events leading up to this scene, outdoor enthusiast Lewis Medlock (Burt Reynolds) organizes a weekend canoeing trip down a soon-to-be-submerged river in the Georgia backcountry, with three urban businessmen (played by Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox) but they enter a nightmare.

When two backcountry mountain men start to sexually assault one of the canoeists, Medlock kills him with a bow and arrow and they hide the body. Later, Ed Gentry (Jon Voight) kills the second one and his friends sink his body in the rising lake water.

In this scene the local sheriff suspects but can't prove that something happened, and he warns them with line one. Bobby Trippe (Ned Beatty) quickly replies with line two. In the 1973 Academy Awards, "Deliverance" was nominated in three categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Godfather").

The novel this movie is based on was written by James Dickey. He has a small part in this movie as Sheriff Bullard for the small town of Aintry (and has the quote in line one).

The great bluegrass song "Dueling Banjos" was written for this movie and subsequently became a huge hit in 1973. However, Arthur Smith pointed out that he had written and recorded an almost identical tune in 1955 called "Feuding Banjos." Smith eventually won a lawsuit over the issue.
9. "Kids are scared of the dark." "You're afraid of the dark, too, Marv." Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: Home Alone

In the events leading up to this scene, the large family of Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) accidentally leaves him behind when it rushes to the airport to go to France for their Christmas vacation (just prior to the family leaving, Kevin had been sent to the attic for misbehaving). Kevin prepares to spend Christmas alone, but becomes aware of two house burglars (played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) casing his neighborhood.

In this scene, the burglars plan to burglarize Kevin's house after dark, after they become aware he is home alone. Marv (Daniel Stern) is pleased by this plan and says line one.

His partner Harry (Joe Pesci) responds with line two. In the 1991 Academy Awards "Home Alone" was nominated for two Oscars but didn't win either.

The posters and DVD cases for this movie (showing a wide-eyed Culkin with both hands on his face) is often compared to the famous painting "The Scream" by Edvard Munch.
10. "Pardon me, sir, but I lost my ID in... in a flood and I'd like to get some Old Harper, hard stuff. Would you mind buying a bottle for me?" "Why certainly. I lost my wife, too - her name wasn't Idy, though, and it wasn't in a flood - but I know what ya... " Choose the movie these quotes are in, from these multiple choices.

Answer: American Graffiti

In the events leading up to this scene, Curt Henderson (Richard Dreyfuss) and Steve Bolander (Ron Howard) are spending one last night with some of their friends in their hometown before heading off to college in the morning. In this scene Terry "Toad" Fields (Charles Martin Smith) has been goaded into buying some liquor by his new girlfriend Debbie Dunham (Candy Clark) with the line, "I bet you're smart enough to get us some brew," and he parks himself outside a liquor store.

As a bum enters the store Terry speaks the first line to him and he replies with the second.

A few minutes later the bum runs out of the store after an apparent robbery and pitches the bottle to Terry as the storeowner runs to the doorway and starts yelling. In the 1974 Academy Awards, "American Graffiti" was nominated in five categories, including Best Picture (but lost to "The Sting").

It is commonly misbelieved that the American TV series "Happy Days" was a spin off from this movie. In actuality, the pilot for the series was seen on the TV show "Love, American Style" and it aired before "American Graffiti" began production.

The episode was titled "Love and Happy Days" and it aired on February 25, 1972. That episode featured eventual "Happy Days" cast members Ron Howard, Anson Williams and Marion Ross.
